As the aftershocks from last week's violent disorder ripple across Britain, a febrile mood hangs over the nation.
The air is filled with tension and anxiety. Explosive controversies are now flaring up over a host of issues, from zero-tolerance policing to public expenditure cuts.
Now, the historian Dr David Starkey has sparked a conflagration of his own.
During a debate about the disturbances on BBC2's Newsnight, Dr Starkey argued that one of the central problems was the influence of a 'violent, destructive and nihilistic' black culture that had corrupted too many of Britain's youngsters.
Warming to his theme, he said: 'A substantial section of the chavs have become black. The whites have become black. Black and white, boy and girl, operate in this language together . . . which is wholly false, which is a Jamaican patois that's been intruded in England, and this is why so many of us have this sense of literally a foreign country.'
He then further stoked the flames by adding that Enoch Powell was right in warning, more than 40 years ago, that immigration would ultimately cause conflict across our cities.
Dr Starkey's outburst not only outraged his fellow panellists in the BBC studio, but also many commentators who watched the show, even though over the weekend he insisted that he 'was not talking about skin colour but gang culture'.
Piers Morgan called him a 'racist idiot' and pronounced Starkey's television career to be over. Robert Peston, the BBC's business editor, accused him of 'nasty ignorance'.
As a black academic and head of an organisation that encourages young blacks to apply for university, I might be thought of as an obvious candidate to join this swelling chorus of disapproval.
And I cannot dispute the fact that David Starkey is guilty of blundering, both through his unfortunate choice of expression and through the falsity of some of his opinions.
It is absurd, for instance, to claim that last week's carnage proved that Powell was right.

Abstract
Background: Counterfeit and substandard medicines are a global problem affecting both developed and developing countries. Counterfeit medicines are fake, while substandard medicines are true medicines that do not meet the requirements for quality, safety and efficacy of the branded drug. Both counterfeit and substandard drugs can be life threatening and have caused deaths. Thus, it is important to have simple and rapid methodology for detecting counterfeit and substandard medicines. In this study, we used capillary electrophoresis (CE) to detect impurities in lisinopril, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to quantify ciclosporin active ingredients, Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (UPLCMS/ MS) for detecting impurities in both ciclosporin and azithromycin.
Method: 44 lisinopril, 8 ciclosporin and 19 azithromycin products were obtained from hospitals and pharmacies from 11 countries. In-vitro dissolution testing was used to identify differences between products. It was performed to United States Pharmacopeia (USP) guidelines with sampling at intervals up to 120 min. The samples were quantified by CE, isocratic reverse phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) and UPLC-MS for lisinopril, ciclosporin and azithromycin, respectively.
Results: Impurities were detected in all lisinopril tablets: ranging from 4-27%. For ciclosporin, all capsules met the USP requirements, rupturing within 15 minutes. Statistical analysis showed significant differences (p less than 0.0001) between the mean contents of brand and generic formulations, the confidence interval (CI) 95% range for the brands were (79-108), (71-98), (81-110), (85-117) and (73-100), (83-114), (45-62), for the generics, 95% CI were calculated based on the reference sample being 100%. All brands and two generics showed more than 80% of ciclosporin after 90 minutes (99, 100, 94, 84, 92, 85 and 97%). One generic, contained less than 54% of labelled amount (54} 10%). Relative to the brand the mean % content of all capsules were significantly lower (p less than 0.0001). Ciclosporin degradation impurities were detected in one generic preparation.
Conclusion: Based on the results, it is concluded that some of the ciclosporin preparations did not contain the exact mass labelled. Both ciclosporin and lisinopril preparations contained significant impurities. These results have important implications especially with ciclosporin, which has a narrow therapeutic window. Switching among and between branded and generic ciclosporin may lead to irreversible kidney damage or acute rejection.

Travel video about destination London in England.
London is an exciting and pulsating metropolis of the new millennium, a melting pot of both people and culture and a fascinating city of diverse contrasts.
The City Of London contains the Tower, an historic landmark with a remarkable history. A mighty medieval fortress with 13 towers that throughout its 900 years, has served many functions and from the Middle Ages, it was a heavily fortified prison.
After the medieval St. Paul's Cathedral was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1666, Christopher Wren was ordered to re-build it with a dome. During the 36 years of its construction, its design was frequently altered until finally a wonderful masterpiece of church architecture was created.
The Monument is the city's tallest freestanding stone column and a reminder of the Great Fire of London that destroyed 80 percent of the city. In four days, more than 13,000 buildings were destroyed and the Monument was built on the site of the bakery in which the fire began.
Since the reign of Queen Victoria, Buckingham Palace has served as London's royal residence. A garden of mulberry trees once grew on the site of today's palace and the Duke of Buckingham subsequently added a simple brick built residence. Around 60 years later, George II purchased the site for his wife and George IV eventually began to design an extensive palace complex.
The highlight of any holiday in London must be the largest Ferris wheel in the world, the London Eye. Situated on the banks of the Thames, it rises high into the sky, opposite the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.
The former centre of the largest empire in the world, London is still a city of superlatives that attracts millions of visitors each year. Exciting both day and night, London is a modern city with age old traditions and a long and colorful history.

Here it is, our pilot episode!
Why am I doing this? I travel a lot. Too much. And recently I find myself rocking up in a city that I've never been to before and know very little about. On any level. Culture, language, transport, money, food, etc. But most travel shows are an hour-long, US-centric, full of bad information, and almost exclusively aimed at tourists. So I wanted to create something different. Something aimed at the frequent traveller, something portable and short-form. Something...useful.
In our pilot episode we get you in, out, and around the wonderful city of London, England. We tell you the best way to get from the airport into the city, the best way to get around, how much things cost, and why you should ALWAYS stand on the right.
In follow up episodes we'll be adding a food and drink segment, as well as tips on how to avoid those awkward social and business faux pas.
I really appreciate you taking the time to watch this and welcome any thoughts, feedback, ideas, and suggestions for future episodes. Travel is my passion and I'm excited to share it with you.

There are incredibly lots of things to see, there is the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Trafalgar Square, the Piccadilly Circus, the famous parks, the St. James and the Hyde, the rebuilt Globe Theatre, the Madame Tussaud’s, the Sherlock Holmes Museum, and the new pride of the city, the London Eye… Not to mention the busy cultural life, the theatres, the restaurants of the Soho and Covent Garden, and the uncountable number of pubs, where in the old days Shakespeare, Dickens or Churchill had their beers.

The colourful suburb of Vauxhall is located alongside the River Thames, not far from Central London and it’s the perfect place for a day out for all the family.
Vauxhall is home to the Secret Intelligence Service building, MI6. So, it's no surprise that Vauxhall was the birth place of James Bond. There's even a local school named after the top British spy.
History has played a significant part in the story of Vauxhall and looking around today, there are signs of the area’s past everywhere. From this wall, to these shops. Even this post box was made in the past.
Vauxhall, often known locally as Voho is known for its nightlife so while in the area I decided to go out and find myself a pretty girl. I had few drinks in Area, Union, The Eagle, Fire, The Hoist, and the Royal Vauxhall Tavern but there were barely any girls in sight… perhaps it was the X Factor final night and they were all at home watching Dermot Murnaghan and the gang.
I made loads of friends though, everyone is so friendly here especially Paulo. He wants to meet up again tomorrow and has an exciting day planned for us, something to do with cottages or something.
Getting to Vauxhall is easy, planes fly to Vauxhall International Airport frequently but the lack of a runway prevents them from landing. However, train, car or tricycle is also a good option. The cost of visiting any of Vauxhall’s nightclubs varies and poppers are available at an additional cost.

For a unique view of London, UK, enjoy some sightseeing on the London Eye.
This giant Ferris wheel is over 400 feet tall, and it is one of the largest structures in the city. Some 3.5 million people ride it annually, making it one of the United Kingdom’s most popular tourist attractions. The Eye operates late into the evening, making it a perfect way to cap off a busy day of sightseeing. Believe us, if you thought London was lovely in the daylight, wait till you see it from the London Eye during the night—the city, lit up, is a glittering sight you’ll never forget.
Climb into one of the 32 air conditioned gondolas, sit down (or stand up!), and enjoy a London Eye tour. Every half-hour, the wheel completes a rotation, meaning you get a full 30 minutes to see the capital city from a height and angle previously only reachable by birds. On a clear day, you can see up to 25 miles in all directions. Now that’s a breathtaking view.

The sleepy residential suburb is conveniently located in South London and thanks to it's excellent transport links, it only takes 15 minutes to get here.
Clapham high street is a great place to buy some gifts, there's a wide range of varied and exciting shops to check out. I also visited the 24 hour market on Venn Street. It's a great place to pick up some locally grown vegetables and freshly baked goods.
Many travel to Clapham for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and if peace and quiet is what you're after then Clapham Common is the place for you. Anglo Saxons first settled on the common in 1887, now-a-days it's used purely for recreation and hosts many music festival.
Whether you're into football or dogging, there's something for everyone on the common.
Well I had a lovely day in Clapham and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.
