Sibre - Exclusive PTI Interview at TOC Europe
Thilo Pfister,
Managing Director of brake systems specialists Sibre, took the opportunity in this interview to articulate how
SMART (Sibre Monitoring
Analysis Remote Technology) interconnects with both an online ‘cloud’ and a
PLC (
Programmable Logic Controller), therefore generating a forecast of brake system data.
Filmed on location in
London at
TOC Europe 2014, Pfister also explains how
SLP (Snag
Load Protection) uses sensors together with extremely fast-acting brakes to prevent snag situations from
occurring.
Sibre’s new SMART and SLP technologies have been designed to offer anticipatory solutions, saving vital time and money.

Sibre was established in
1958 and is completely focused on
Design manufacturing and distribution of breaks and drive components for heavy duty equipment such as container handling machines in the ports or equipment in the mining industry. We operate five subsidiaries in the main country's areas of the world and cooperate with something like fifty agents in various countries.
During this year, in TOC London, we're launching innovation which is called smart which stands for: Sibre monitoring analysis remote technology.
Smart completely contributes to the
Development where the terminal operators are striving for increase of efficiency, which is mainly counted by moves per hour and increasing the moves per hour, you can do that by increasing the speed of the hoist of the trolley of the gantry travelling or you could do that by optimizing further developing the process control of the operation; and this is where smart is the perfect contribution for this increase of efficiency.
What Smart is doing is reading the sensor data 24/7, transferring the sensor data to the cloud by WiFi or 3G, as well as transferring the information to the crane plc. Smart is
Logic for the development of the previously known
SMS status monitoring system which was just a local system right mounted and not transferring data beyond crane PLC. Smart is coming with the software which makes available more information for analyzing and for generating a forecast of brake performance, so the main benefit for the customer of this kind of system is that it can understand what the performance of the product will be in another to three weeks time instead of having his maintenance team available continuously he won't be able to plan the maintenance tasks on a much proper way. That's why we understand Smart being a perfect contribution to automated terminals as well as non-automated terminals in order to improve the efficiency the moves per hour by a better process control on maintenance, maintenance tasks, maintenance planning, and thus reducing the amount of unplanned downtime.
Besides making all this information available inside the terminal, we have access to the database which is in a cloud by web browser so this information is not only available on individual break or individual crane but its available for one terminal as well as on a global scale several terminals and can be accessed by central maintenance headquarter. Using the browser, accessing the cloud, using information like alerts coming from our software based on the break individual data. As another innovation, we are launching SLP, which stands for Snack Load Protection and it's another opportunity for increasing operational up-time in mainly automated terminals.
Instead of waiting a snack load to occur, it anticipates by dedicated sensors an upcoming snack load and is using standard products standard breaks combined with additional features and sensors to have an intervention in a very early phase of the upcoming snack load. So instead of letting the snack load produce the impact on steel structure and ropes, we stop the drive before the container is jammed and the damage happens.
Besides avoiding these maximum stresses in the structure, our software which comes with the package of snack load protection our software enables the
operator to return to normal operation in a very fast and easy way, without any mechanical intervention this is remote control process releasing the container from its position coming back to normal operation within very short time.
