Shiga Prefecture (滋賀県, Shiga-ken) is a prefecture of Japan, which forms part of the Kansai region in the western part of Honshu island. It encircles Lake Biwa, the largest freshwater lake in Japan. The capital is Ōtsu.
Shiga was known as Ōmi Province or Gōshū before the prefectural system was established. Omi was a neighbor of Nara and Kyoto, at the junction of western and eastern Japan. During the period 667 to 672, Emperor Tenji founded a palace in Otsu. In 742, Emperor Shōmu founded a palace in Shigaraki. In the early Heian Period, Saichō was born in the north of Otsu and founded Enryaku-ji, the center of Tendai and one a UNESCO World Heritage Site and monument of Ancient Kyoto now.
In the Medieval Period, the Sasaki clan ruled Omi, and afterward the Rokkaku clan, Kyōgoku clan and Azai clans ruled Omi. In the 1570s, Oda Nobunaga subjugated Omi and built Azuchi Castle on the eastern shores of Lake Biwa in 1579. Tōdō Takatora, Gamō Ujisato, Oichi, Yodo-dono, Ohatsu and Oeyo were Omi notables in the Sengoku Period. In those times, Ninja were active in Kōka (See also Kōga-ryū).
Ōtsu (大津市, Ōtsu-shi) is the capital city of Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Ōtsu is known as the main port of Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. It briefly served as the capital of Japan from 667 to 672 AD during the Asuka period (538 – 710). The city is home to numerous sites of historical importance, notably the temples of Mii-dera, Ishiyama-dera, and Enryaku-ji and the Hiyoshi Taisha shrine. Enryaku-ji is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities)". Ōtsu was incorporated as a city on October 1, 1898.
As of November 1, 2012, the city has an estimated population of 341,684 and a population density of 740 persons per km2. The total area is 464.10 km2 (179 sq mi).
Ōtsu is located at the southwest of Shiga Prefecture. The city is "L"-shaped and stretches along the southwest shore of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake. Ōtsu ranges from the densely populated alluvium depressions near the shore of Lake Biwa to sparsely populated hilly and mountainous areas to the west (Hira Mountains and Mount Hiei) and south of the city.
Lake Biwa (Japanese: 琵琶湖, Hepburn: Biwa-ko) is the largest freshwater lake in Japan, located in Shiga Prefecture (west-central Honshu), northeast of the former capital city of Kyoto Because of its proximity to the ancient capital, references to Lake Biwa appear frequently in Japanese literature, particularly in poetry and in historical accounts of battles.
The name Biwako was established in the Edo Period. There are various theories about the origin of the name Biwako, but it is generally believed to be so named because of the resemblance of its shape to that of a stringed instrument called the biwa. Kōsō, a learned monk of Enryaku-ji in the 14th century, gave a clue to the origin of the name Biwako in his writing: "The lake is the Pure land of the goddess Benzaiten because she lives on Chikubu Island and the shape of the lake is similar to that of the biwa, her favorite instrument."
The lake was formerly known as the Awaumi (淡海?, Freshwater Sea) or the Chikatsu Awaumi (近淡海?, Freshwater Sea Near the Capital) . Later the pronunciation Awaumi changed to the modern Ōmi as in the name of Ōmi Province. The lake is also called Nio no Umi (鳰の海?, "Little Grebe Lake") in literature.

Japan (i/dʒəˈpæn/; Japanese: 日本 Nippon [nip̚põ̞ɴ] or Nihon [nihõ̞ɴ]; formally 日本国 Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku, "State of Japan") is an island country in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The kanji that make up Japan's name mean "sun origin", and Japan is often called the "Land of the Rising Sun".
Japan is a stratovolcanic archipelago of 6,852 islands. The four largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which make up about ninety-seven percent of Japan's land area. Japan's population of 126 million is the world's tenth largest. Approximately 9.1 million people live in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, which is the sixth largest city proper in the OECD. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the world's largest metropolitan area with over 35 million residents and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy.
Shiga is a Japanese prefecture to the east of Kyoto, on the island of Honshu. It contains the enormous freshwater Lake Biwa, whose shoreline is home to the regional capital, Otsu, the cities of Hikone, Sakamoto and Nagahama, beaches and holiday resorts. To the northeast, 4,000-meter Mount Ibuki can be climbed for far-reaching views over the water. 西国観音巡礼 第13番 石山寺 石山観音 Ishiyama-dera temple is located in Otsu city of Shiga prefecture. This temple is a beautiful suburban temple, next to Seta river (close to Lake Biwa) in Otsu city. One of the highlights of this temple is the two deva kings that are at the front gate (san mon). These two statues are sculpted by two famous carvers of the Kamakura period Tankei and Unkei. The statues look two dimensional from a distance but by a close look you can see that they are three dimension statues. Very interesting... This temple is number thirteenth temple of the Saikoku (33 kannon temples of Kansai region) pilgrimage circuit. Enjoy.
The kristiawan family's trip to japan otsu shiga,
Sorry for not posting for a while. It's been a busy month and a half, but I've finally put something together. I went to the Otsu Matsuri festival last weekend in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. It was a fantastic experience and I even got to see my fellow Shiga JETs pull the proverbial tanuki float "Tanuki-Yama." I promise that this video is worth the wait. * An 11- DAYS- TRIP TO JAPAN * We spent half day of day 3 in Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan with the cute sea creatures, didn't forget to get the Rikuro Ojisan's cheese cake at Osaka Station before taking off to our next stop, KYOTO!! We reached our homestay in Sakamoto late and couldn't go according to our plan to visit Kibune Shrine :( Spent the rest of the day to explore around the peaceful village and made friend with the friendly villagers. Had dinner at a nearby restaurant. We got up early the next day and headed to Hikone first, visited Gokoku Shrine and Hikone Castle, went to Omihachiman and experienced the Hachimanbori Meguri, were surprised that everything in Omihachiman closed before 5pm but lucky enough to find an opened restaurant Hatsuyuki Shokudo. We really enjoyed our late lunch...

JAPAN TRAVEL TOUR GUIDE - NAGANO PREFECTURE Surrounded on all four sides by 3000+ meter tall mountains, Nagano prefecture is called the “Roof of Japan.” The 1998 Winter Olympics and Paralympics were hosted in this world-class snow resort area. Hakuba, Shiga Kogen Heights, and Nozawa Onsen have continued to attract winter sports enthusiasts every year since. Approximately 20% of Nagano is Natural Park land. But Nagano is not only popular for skiing and winter sports, Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park is the only place in the world where you can see wild monkeys bathing in an onsen (hot spring) in the winter months. In summer, Karuizawa is one of Japan’s most popular resort towns. A trip to the Edo-era post town of Tsumago-juku gives you the feeling of having stepped back in time, and, of course,...
