The Kardashians are already causing some major controversy on their trip to Cuba while filming upcoming episodes of their reality show.
Kim, Kanye, and the rest of the Kardashians are currently filming while the vacationing in Cuba, and they’re already getting some serious backlash for their actions on the trip thus far.
Their glamorous trip to Cuba is already controversial in and of itself, even prompting South Florida Representative ILLAH-NEA ROS-LAYTIN-EN to speak out about her outrage over the Kardashian’s destination choice. She told People magazine QUOTE, “I know it's cool for celebrities to go to Cuba, but the Cuban people don't experience the glamorous Havana that is featured on social media...Far from photo shoots and fruity drinks, everyday Cubans experience a different, sad reality." The Senator also tweeted her thoughts on the matter.
But the backlash didn’t stop there. Khloe Kardashian has been documenting her seemingly relaxing and glamorous time in the country on social media, posting pictures of herself with Kim, Kourtney, and family friend Malika Haqq enjoying some Cuban cigars with their perfect pouts.
But the real outrage from fans came out when Khloe posted a sultry picture of herself standing on a staircase underneath the word, Fidel, as in ruthless former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
That seems like it would be easy enough to crop out, right? Whether Khloe was aware of the word’s presence or meaning when she posted the pic, the people of the internet were not impressed, to say the least. One user commented on the post, “As a Cuban American, I am appalled that you’re standing beneath the name of one of the cruelest and most hated dictators to human mankind. This is inconsiderate and disrespectful”, which was accompanied by many other angry sentiments thrown at the “Strong Looks Better Naked” author on her social media accounts.
But despite all the controversy, Khloe doesn’t seem to be slowing down with her posts anytime soon. She followed up the Fidel photo with another expressing her gratitude to be able to appreciate the country’s culture.
Of course, we can all get behind someone taking in another’s culture, but that doesn’t mean it has to include sharing sexy pictures underneath a name that represents such pain and cruelty to others, right? But we’re gonna give Khloe the benefit of the doubt on this one and assume she didn’t put up the post with malicious intent, and hope that she takes this experience as a lesson on posting responsibly.

Embodying all the exoticism in vogue with the avant-garde circles of Paris in the 1930's and living at the crossroad of four cultural currents: Asian, African, European and American, the internationally renowned Cuban painter Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) was a precursor of a cross-cultural style of painting, infusing Western modernism with African, Caribbean, and Oceanic symbolism.
Lam was the eighth son of an 80 year old, educated Cantonese immigrant and a 37 year old Cuban mulatta of Congolese and Spanish ancestry. In his hometown of Sagua La Grande, Lam learned the religion of the Orishas from his godmother, a Santeria priestess. This early contact with African traditions and the luxuriant nature of Cuba were to be defining influences in his art.
In 1916, Lam and part of his of family settled in Havana, where he quickly broke from the expectations of his parents, who wanted him to study law, to follow his dream of becoming an artist. He studied at the Academia de San Alejandro until 1923 when at the age of 21, his hometown awarded him a grant to study in Europe.
His sojourn in Spain lasted 14 years. There he discovered the old masters at the Prado Museum, and visited the Archeological Museum where he discovered correlations between western art and the so called "primitive" art. In 1938, Lam left civil war torn Spain for Paris. There he developed a close friendship with Picasso, who instantly recognized in him a kindred spirit -- calling him "primo" (cousin) - and introduced him to his friends. Lam was highly impacted by the work of Matisse, Braque, and the Surrealists, as is evident in his early paintings.
Lam's work is often full of dark themes; death, anger, and fear. This can be attributed to the death of his wife and infant son in 1931 of tuberculosis. His many paintings on the mother and child theme are a testament of the devastation he endured. This, no doubt was compounded by the wars in Europe, and the ever changing social and political turmoil in Cuba. In 1941 Lam escaped World War II in a ship headed for Martinique with 300 other threatened artists and intellectuals
Returning to Cuba after almost 20 years of self-imposed exile, Lam consciously digs deeper into his Afro-Cuban roots: luxuriant nature (lush tobacco leaves, swollen papaya fruits, tall sugarcane stalks, flowers and butterflies) and African deities fuse into hybrid figures (seldom seen in western art since Greek times) that turn into vibrant tropical creations that challenge western constructions of the primitive.
In the winter of 1945/46 Lam traveled with his new wife and Andre Breton (founder of Surrealism) to Haiti where they attended voodoo ceremonies. The strength of those rituals greatly impressed him and added a new dark impetus to his vision. His paintings became more violent in tone, the hybrid figures turned totemic. The tropical landscape gave way to somber, ambiguous spaces, and the bright neoimpressionist colors turned to earth tones, black, grays, and white. He studies African poetry, alchemy, hermetism, esoterism, Tao philosophy, Oceanic art, and Jungian psychoanalysis. These arcane worlds of opposites, of death, rebirth and metamorphosis, revitalized his own pictorial language and produce, in Lam's own words "hallucinating figures with the power to surprise," - that make him unique and famous.
In the early 1950's, Lam returned to Europe and settles in Paris. He divorces his second wife and in 1964 marries for the third and final time to Lou Laurin Lam with whom he had three sons. He established a second home in Albissola Mare, a small Italian seaside town, where he installed his Totem collection, and which was to be his home for the next 20 years.
Throughout the rest of his career, Lam traveled incessantly between Europe and the Americas, sharing his extraordinary intellectual and artistic creativity with the most important figures of the Intelligentsia of the 20th century. He dedicates increasing attention to graphics and ceramics. The outstanding characteristics of his mature art are a sharp and refined draftsmanship, a violent sensuality and a highly personal version of modern primitivism.
In 1978 he suffered a massive stroke that left him confined to a wheelchair. His indomitable spirit helped him find the strength to continue working almost until his death in Paris in 1982. According to his wishes he was cremated and his ashes returned to Cuba.

Season six of American Horror Story is finally here and even though the real theme was revealed, we’re all just as confused as before it was a mystery.
wouldn’t be American Horror Story without plenty of OMG and WTF moments and the first episode of season six is filled with it.
Okay, so before we get right into all of the crazy moments from the first episode, everyone can finally breathe a sigh of relief because the theme has been revealed. Season six of American Horror Story is about…drum roll, please: the chilling and mysterious story of the lost colony of Roanoke in North Carolina and how a young couple got caught up in all the craziness.
This is where things start to get a little confusing and complicated. This season, the show is basically a show within a show. The documentary style show within AHS that is appropriately titled ‘My Roanoke Nightmare’ follows a young married couple by the name of Matt and Shelby who fled from Los Angeles to North Carolina for a fresh new start, only to find out that they probably should’ve stayed in LA. So in real life, Matt and Shelby are played by Andre Holland and Lily Rabe, while their dramatization counterparts are played by Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sarah Paulson, respectively.
Now that we’ve got all of that out of the way, let’s get right into all the WTF moments from the premiere episode. First up on our list is the seriously weird rain shower of teeth that happened for no apparent reason.
Yeah, if I was Shelby, I would’ve booked it out of there, but oddly enough, a TON of teeth falling from the sky didn’t entice her to leave…neither did this weird appearance of these two ghostly girls in her hallway…
While these girls aren’t exactly the colonial ghosts we expected to see in the show, something tells us there’s more to the story than we know.
Anyway, it wasn’t until this creepy array of handmade dolls made of twine and straw that Shelby decided she wanted out of the house…
Which now leads us to the fourth WTF moment on our list. After Shelby frantically left the house upon seeing the dolls and a bunch of other stuff, she raced down the street in her car, only to hit an old lady in the middle of the street.
But to Shelby’s and I’m assuming everyone else’s surprise, the woman got back up on her feet and walked right into the woods. So, this is the part where Shelby should’ve just left the old lady alone and continue on her merry way out of town, but she didn’t.
Instead, Shelby chased the woman into the woods where she got lost and then stumbled upon this lovely man.
Gross.
From tooth-y hailstorms to creepy handmade dolls strung out across trees in the middle of the woods, it’s safe to say that season six of AHS has a pretty good mixture of creepy and scary moments and honestly, this is only just the beginning.

Nearly 300 fiesta fans made the trip from Campbell River, Courtenay, Comox, Nanaimo, Victoria & the Lower Mainland. Paul de Ridders of Beez Kneez Catering laid on his latin inspired tapas as well as eight provocative 'salsas'. Gladstone Brewing company was on hand to offer some their fine micro-brewery's fine craft beers! And of course, plenty of tropical dancing opportunities. What a great evening out.

STORYLINE
Cuba has the oldest population in Latin America, and life expectancy rates on a par with the United States, coupled with a birth rate of 1.5, have demographers and policymakers warning of a looming crisis.
Emelia Moreno spends most of her time these days at a neighbourhood day care centre for the elderly in Havana, where she gets meals, and plays dominos and socialises with 1,000 other elderly people who visit daily.
Still vigorous at 75 years old, she lives alone in a small apartment in Central Havana.
Her only child left for the U.S. a decade ago, and she knows that one day she'll be completely dependent on the government because she has no family to take care of her when she grows infirm.
"I had heard people talk about how they felt empty when a family member left, but I had no idea," Moreno said, caressing a photo of her daughter, Yeniset. "It's terrible," she added.
The Convento Belen day care centre in Old Havana helps fill the gap.
The crisis has been years in the making, but is coming to a head at a time when President Raul Castro's government is struggling to implement fledgling reforms that aim to resuscitate an ailing economy.
Universal education, which is generally associated worldwide with low fertility numbers, improved life expectancy rates achieved through universal health care, and free abortions offered through the health care system have all contributed to the problem.
The greying trend can also be traced to a sustained migratory outflow of 35-thousand per year as people seek opportunity in the United States and elsewhere.
Research shows emigrants are increasingly women of child-bearing age, which compounds the problem.
Cuba's National Office of Statistics says some 2 (m) million of the island's 11 (m) million inhabitants, or 17 percent, were over 60 years old last year.
Demographers agree that Cuba's population has topped out at around 11.2 (m) million, and negative growth will be the rule for the foreseeable future.
That's already high compared to a regional rate somewhere north of 9 percent, extrapolating from the most recent U.N. figures available from 2000.
That U.N. study shows Cuba's population is aging even faster than that of China, which has forbidden couples to have more than one child.
Cuba's rate would be typical in a wealthy European nation but Cuba lacks the wealth to cope with it.
By 2021, more Cubans will be leaving the workforce than entering, analysts say.
The trend will get worse with the number of pensioners projected to nearly double to 3.6 (m) million, or a third of the population, by 2035.
"I think that there are certain assurances to growing old in Cuba - spiritual security; not always in a material sense due to the difficulties we have, but we can solve these problems through a national system, a national system of health and security," said Nelson Aguila, the director of the Convento Belen day care centre, which also offers medical care and physical therapy.
In recent years Cuba has implemented a number of measures for the ageing, including an expanded denture distribution program and establishing "grandparents' circles" of elderly citizens who get together for activities and help each other out when the relatives they live with are at work.
The government has also progressively rolled back the retirement age to 60 for women and 65 for men, and recently allowed retirees to return to work and still collect their pensions.
They're also being encouraged to join the class of small-business owners setting up shop under Castro's reforms, though experts say that idea has limited potential.

Now while his name was popular in the circles of the Big Apple’s established Latin music scene, launching The Pedrito Marinez Group allowed him to branch out on his own, with a new brand of tropical music. Today he has gone full circle, having had the opportunity to record his latest record La Habana Dreams in his home country of Cuba.

Prior to Spanish colonization in the late 15th century, Cuba was inhabited by Amerindian tribes. It remained a colony of Spain until the Spanish–American War of 1898, which led to nominal independence as a de facto U.S. protectorate in 1902. As a fragile republic, Cuba attempted to strengthen its democratic system, but mounting political radicalization and social strife culminated in the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1952. Further unrest and instability led to Batista's ousting in January 1959 by the July 26 movement, which afterwards established a government under the leadership of Fidel Castro. Since 1965, the country has been governed by the Communist Party of Cuba.

Khloe Kardashian has been documenting her seemingly relaxing and glamorous time in the country on social media, posting pictures of herself with Kim, Kourtney, and family friend Malika Haqq enjoying some Cuban cigars with their perfect pouts. But the real outrage from fans came out when Khloe posted a sultry picture of herself standing on a staircase underneath the word, Fidel, as in ruthless former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. That seems like it would be easy enough to crop out, right? Whether Khloe was aware of the word’s presence or meaning when she posted the pic, the people of the internet were not impressed, to say the least. One user commented on the post, “As a Cuban American, I am appalled that you’re standing beneath the name of one of the cruelest and most hated dictators to human mankind. This is inconsiderate and disrespectful”, which was accompanied by many other angry sentiments thrown at the “Strong Looks Better Naked” author on her social media accounts. But despite all the controversy, Khloe doesn’t seem to be slowing down with her posts anytime soon. She followed up the Fidel photo with another expressing her gratitude to be able to appreciate the country’s culture. Of course, we can all get behind someone taking in another’s culture, but that doesn’t mean it has to include sharing sexy pictures underneath a name that represents such pain and cruelty to others, right? But we’re gonna give Khloe the benefit of the doubt on this one and assume she didn’t put up the post with malicious intent, and hope that she takes this experience as a lesson on posting responsibly. Embodying all the exoticism in vogue with the avant-garde circles of Paris in the 1930's and living at the crossroad of four cultural currents: Asian, African, European and American, the internationally renowned Cuban painter Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) was a precursor of a cross-cultural style of painting, infusing Western modernism with African, Caribbean, and Oceanic symbolism. Lam was the eighth son of an 80 year old, educated Cantonese immigrant and a 37 year old Cuban mulatta of Congolese and Spanish ancestry. In his hometown of Sagua La Grande, Lam learned the religion of the Orishas from his godmother, a Santeria priestess. This early contact with African traditions and the luxuriant nature of Cuba were to be defining influences in his art. In 1916, Lam and part of his of family settled in Havana, where he quickly broke from the expectations of his parents, who wanted him to study law, to follow his dream of becoming an artist. He studied at the Academia de San Alejandro until 1923 when at the age of 21, his hometown awarded him a grant to study in Europe. His sojourn in Spain lasted 14 years. There he discovered the old masters at the Prado Museum, and visited the Archeological Museum where he discovered correlations between western art and the so called "primitive" art. In 1938, Lam left civil war torn Spain for Paris. There he developed a close friendship with Picasso, who instantly recognized in him a kindred spirit -- calling him "primo" (cousin) - and introduced him to his friends. Lam was highly impacted by the work of Matisse, Braque, and the Surrealists, as is evident in his early paintings. Lam's work is often full of dark themes; death, anger, and fear. This can be attributed to the death of his wife and infant son in 1931 of tuberculosis. His many paintings on the mother and child theme are a testament of the devastation he endured. This, no doubt was compounded by the wars in Europe, and the ever changing social and political turmoil in Cuba. In 1941 Lam escaped World War II in a ship headed for Martinique with 300 other threatened artists and intellectuals Returning to Cuba after almost 20 years of self-imposed exile, Lam consciously digs deeper into his Afro-Cuban roots: luxuriant nature (lush tobacco leaves, swollen papaya fruits, tall sugarcane stalks, flowers and butterflies) and African deities fuse into hybrid figures (seldom seen in western art since Greek times) that turn into vibrant tropical creations that challenge western constructions of the primitive. In the winter of 1945/46 Lam traveled with his new wife and Andre Breton (founder of Surrealism) to Haiti where they attended voodoo ceremonies. The strength of those rituals greatly impressed him and added a new dark impetus to his vision. His paintings became more violent in tone, the hybrid figures turned totemic. The tropical landscape gave way to somber, ambiguous spaces, and the bright neoimpressionist colors turned to earth tones, black, grays, and white. He studies African poetry, alchemy, hermetism, esoterism, Tao philosophy, Oceanic art, and Jungian psychoanalysis. These arcane worlds of opposites, of death, rebirth and metamorphosis, revitalized his own pictorial language and produce, in Lam's own words "hallucinating figures with the power to surprise," - that make him unique and famous. In the early 1950's, Lam returned to Europe and settles in Paris. He divorces his second wife and in 1964 marries for the third and final time to Lou Laurin Lam with whom he had three sons. He established a second home in Albissola Mare, a small Italian seaside town, where he installed his Totem collection, and which was to be his home for the next 20 years. Throughout the rest of his career, Lam traveled incessantly between Europe and the Americas, sharing his extraordinary intellectual and artistic creativity with the most important figures of the Intelligentsia of the 20th century. He dedicates increasing attention to graphics and ceramics. The outstanding characteristics of his mature art are a sharp and refined draftsmanship, a violent sensuality and a highly personal version of modern primitivism. In 1978 he suffered a massive stroke that left him confined to a wheelchair. His indomitable spirit helped him find the strength to continue working almost until his death in Paris in 1982. According to his wishes he was cremated and his ashes returned to Cuba. More Celebrity News ►► http://bit.ly/SubClevverNews Season six of American Horror Story is finally here and even though the real theme was revealed, we’re all just as confused as before it was a mystery. wouldn’t be American Horror Story without plenty of OMG and WTF moments and the first episode of season six is filled with it. Okay, so before we get right into all of the crazy moments from the first episode, everyone can finally breathe a sigh of relief because the theme has been revealed. Season six of American Horror Story is about…drum roll, please: the chilling and mysterious story of the lost colony of Roanoke in North Carolina and how a young couple got caught up in all the craziness. This is where things start to get a little confusing and complicated. This season, the show is basically a show within a show. The documentary style show within AHS that is appropriately titled ‘My Roanoke Nightmare’ follows a young married couple by the name of Matt and Shelby who fled from Los Angeles to North Carolina for a fresh new start, only to find out that they probably should’ve stayed in LA. So in real life, Matt and Shelby are played by Andre Holland and Lily Rabe, while their dramatization counterparts are played by Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sarah Paulson, respectively. Now that we’ve got all of that out of the way, let’s get right into all the WTF moments from the premiere episode. First up on our list is the seriously weird rain shower of teeth that happened for no apparent reason. Yeah, if I was Shelby, I would’ve booked it out of there, but oddly enough, a TON of teeth falling from the sky didn’t entice her to leave…neither did this weird appearance of these two ghostly girls in her hallway… While these girls aren’t exactly the colonial ghosts we expected to see in the show, something tells us there’s more to the story than we know. Anyway, it wasn’t until this creepy array of handmade dolls made of twine and straw that Shelby decided she wanted out of the house… Which now leads us to the fourth WTF moment on our list. After Shelby frantically left the house upon seeing the dolls and a bunch of other stuff, she raced down the street in her car, only to hit an old lady in the middle of the street. But to Shelby’s and I’m assuming everyone else’s surprise, the woman got back up on her feet and walked right into the woods. So, this is the part where Shelby should’ve just left the old lady alone and continue on her merry way out of town, but she didn’t. Instead, Shelby chased the woman into the woods where she got lost and then stumbled upon this lovely man. Gross. From tooth-y hailstorms to creepy handmade dolls strung out across trees in the middle of the woods, it’s safe to say that season six of AHS has a pretty good mixture of creepy and scary moments and honestly, this is only just the beginning. Nearly 300 fiesta fans made the trip from Campbell River, Courtenay, Comox, Nanaimo, Victoria & the Lower Mainland. STORYLINE Cuba has the oldest population in Latin America, and life expectancy rates on a par with the United States, coupled with a birth rate of 1.5, have demographers and policymakers warning of a looming crisis. Emelia Moreno spends most of her time these days at a neighbourhood day care centre for the elderly in Havana, where she gets meals, and plays dominos and socialises with 1,000 other elderly people who visit daily. Still vigorous at 75 years old, she lives alone in a small apartment in Central Havana. Her only child left for the U.S. a decade ago, and she knows that one day she'll be completely dependent on the government because she has no family to take care of her when she grows infirm. "I had heard people talk about how they felt empty when a family member left, but I had no idea," Moreno said, caressing a photo of her daughter, Yeniset. "It's terrible," she added. The Convento Belen day care centre in Old Havana helps fill the gap. The crisis has been years in the making, but is coming to a head at a time when President Raul Castro's government is struggling to implement fledgling reforms that aim to resuscitate an ailing economy. Universal education, which is generally associated worldwide with low fertility numbers, improved life expectancy rates achieved through universal health care, and free abortions offered through the health care system have all contributed to the problem. The greying trend can also be traced to a sustained migratory outflow of 35-thousand per year as people seek opportunity in the United States and elsewhere. Research shows emigrants are increasingly women of child-bearing age, which compounds the problem. Cuba's National Office of Statistics says some 2 (m) million of the island's 11 (m) million inhabitants, or 17 percent, were over 60 years old last year. Demographers agree that Cuba's population has topped out at around 11.2 (m) million, and negative growth will be the rule for the foreseeable future. That's already high compared to a regional rate somewhere north of 9 percent, extrapolating from the most recent U.N. figures available from 2000. That U.N. study shows Cuba's population is aging even faster than that of China, which has forbidden couples to have more than one child. Cuba's rate would be typical in a wealthy European nation but Cuba lacks the wealth to cope with it. By 2021, more Cubans will be leaving the workforce than entering, analysts say. The trend will get worse with the number of pensioners projected to nearly double to 3.6 (m) million, or a third of the population, by 2035. "I think that there are certain assurances to growing old in Cuba - spiritual security; not always in a material sense due to the difficulties we have, but we can solve these problems through a national system, a national system of health and security," said Nelson Aguila, the director of the Convento Belen day care centre, which also offers medical care and physical therapy. In recent years Cuba has implemented a number of measures for the ageing, including an expanded denture distribution program and establishing "grandparents' circles" of elderly citizens who get together for activities and help each other out when the relatives they live with are at work. The government has also progressively rolled back the retirement age to 60 for women and 65 for men, and recently allowed retirees to return to work and still collect their pensions. They're also being encouraged to join the class of small-business owners setting up shop under Castro's reforms, though experts say that idea has limited potential. Embodying all the exoticism in vogue with the avant-garde circles of Paris in the 1930's and living at the crossroad of four cultural currents: Asian, African, European and American, the internationally renowned Cuban painter Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) was a precursor of a cross-cultural style of painting, infusing Western modernism with African, Caribbean, and Oceanic symbolism. Lam was the eighth son of an 80 year old, educated Cantonese immigrant and a 37 year old Cuban mulatta of Congolese and Spanish ancestry. The Kardashians are already causing some major controversy on their trip to Cuba while filming upcoming episodes of their reality show.
Kim, Kanye, and the rest of the Kardashians are currently filming while the vacationing in Cuba, and they’re already getting some serious backlash for their actions on the trip thus far.
Their glamorous trip to Cuba is already controversial in and of itself, even prompting South Florida Representative ILLAH-NEA ROS-LAYTIN-EN to speak out about her outrage over the Kardashian’s destination choice. She told People magazine QUOTE, “I know it's cool for celebrities to go to Cuba, but the Cuban people don't experience the glamorous Havana that is featured on social media...Far from photo shoots and fruity drinks, everyday Cubans experience a different, sad reality." The Senator also tweeted her thoughts on the matter.
But the backlash didn’t stop there. Khloe Kardashian has been documenting her seemingly relaxing and glamorous time in the country on social media, posting pictures of herself with Kim, Kourtney, and family friend Malika Haqq enjoying some Cuban cigars with their perfect pouts.
But the real outrage from fans came out when Khloe posted a sultry picture of herself standing on a staircase underneath the word, Fidel, as in ruthless former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
That seems like it would be easy enough to crop out, right? Whether Khloe was aware of the word’s presence or meaning when she posted the pic, the people of the internet were not impressed, to say the least. One user commented on the post, “As a Cuban American, I am appalled that you’re standing beneath the name of one of the cruelest and most hated dictators to human mankind. This is inconsiderate and disrespectful”, which was accompanied by many other angry sentiments thrown at the “Strong Looks Better Naked” author on her social media accounts.
But despite all the controversy, Khloe doesn’t seem to be slowing down with her posts anytime soon. She followed up the Fidel photo with another expressing her gratitude to be able to appreciate the country’s culture.
Of course, we can all get behind someone taking in another’s culture, but that doesn’t mean it has to include sharing sexy pictures underneath a name that represents such pain and cruelty to others, right? But we’re gonna give Khloe the benefit of the doubt on this one and assume she didn’t put up the post with malicious intent, and hope that she takes this experience as a lesson on posting responsibly.

Lam was the eighth son of an 80 year old, educated Cantonese immigrant and a 37 year old Cuban mulatta of Congolese and Spanish ancestry. In his hometown of Sagua La Grande, Lam learned the religion of the Orishas from his godmother, a Santeria priestess. This early contact with African traditions and the luxuriant nature of Cuba were to be defining influences in his art.
In 1916, Lam and part of his of family settled in Havana, where he quickly broke from the expectations of his parents, who wanted him to study law, to follow his dream of becoming an artist. He studied at the Academia de San Alejandro until 1923 when at the age of 21, his hometown awarded him a grant to study in Europe.
His sojourn in Spain lasted 14 years. There he discovered the old masters at the Prado Museum, and visited the Archeological Museum where he discovered correlations between western art and the so called "primitive" art. In 1938, Lam left civil war torn Spain for Paris. There he developed a close friendship with Picasso, who instantly recognized in him a kindred spirit -- calling him "primo" (cousin) - and introduced him to his friends. Lam was highly impacted by the work of Matisse, Braque, and the Surrealists, as is evident in his early paintings.
Lam's work is often full of dark themes; death, anger, and fear. This can be attributed to the death of his wife and infant son in 1931 of tuberculosis. His many paintings on the mother and child theme are a testament of the devastation he endured. This, no doubt was compounded by the wars in Europe, and the ever changing social and political turmoil in Cuba. In 1941 Lam escaped World War II in a ship headed for Martinique with 300 other threatened artists and intellectuals
Returning to Cuba after almost 20 years of self-imposed exile, Lam consciously digs deeper into his Afro-Cuban roots: luxuriant nature (lush tobacco leaves, swollen papaya fruits, tall sugarcane stalks, flowers and butterflies) and African deities fuse into hybrid figures (seldom seen in western art since Greek times) that turn into vibrant tropical creations that challenge western constructions of the primitive.
In the winter of 1945/46 Lam traveled with his new wife and Andre Breton (founder of Surrealism) to Haiti where they attended voodoo ceremonies. The strength of those rituals greatly impressed him and added a new dark impetus to his vision. His paintings became more violent in tone, the hybrid figures turned totemic. The tropical landscape gave way to somber, ambiguous spaces, and the bright neoimpressionist colors turned to earth tones, black, grays, and white. He studies African poetry, alchemy, hermetism, esoterism, Tao philosophy, Oceanic art, and Jungian psychoanalysis. These arcane worlds of opposites, of death, rebirth and metamorphosis, revitalized his own pictorial language and produce, in Lam's own words "hallucinating figures with the power to surprise," - that make him unique and famous.
In the early 1950's, Lam returned to Europe and settles in Paris. He divorces his second wife and in 1964 marries for the third and final time to Lou Laurin Lam with whom he had three sons. He established a second home in Albissola Mare, a small Italian seaside town, where he installed his Totem collection, and which was to be his home for the next 20 years.
Throughout the rest of his career, Lam traveled incessantly between Europe and the Americas, sharing his extraordinary intellectual and artistic creativity with the most important figures of the Intelligentsia of the 20th century. He dedicates increasing attention to graphics and ceramics. The outstanding characteristics of his mature art are a sharp and refined draftsmanship, a violent sensuality and a highly personal version of modern primitivism.
In 1978 he suffered a massive stroke that left him confined to a wheelchair. His indomitable spirit helped him find the strength to continue working almost until his death in Paris in 1982. According to his wishes he was cremated and his ashes returned to Cuba.

There he discovered the old masters at the Prado Museum, and visited the Archeological Museum where he discovered correlations between western art and the so called "primitive" art. In 1938, Lam left civil war torn Spain for Paris. There he developed a close friendship with Picasso, who instantly recognized in him a kindred spirit -- calling him "primo" (cousin) - and introduced him to his friends. Lam was highly impacted by the work of Matisse, Braque, and the Surrealists, as is evident in his early paintings.
Lam's work is often full of dark themes; death, anger, and fear. This can be attributed to the death of his wife and infant son in 1931 of tuberculosis. His many paintings on the mother and child theme are a testament of the devastation he endured. This, no doubt was compounded by the wars in Europe, and the ever changing social and political turmoil in Cuba. In 1941 Lam escaped World War II in a ship headed for Martinique with 300 other threatened artists and intellectuals
Returning to Cuba after almost 20 years of self-imposed exile, Lam consciously digs deeper into his Afro-Cuban roots: luxuriant nature (lush tobacco leaves, swollen papaya fruits, tall sugarcane stalks, flowers and butterflies) and African deities fuse into hybrid figures (seldom seen in western art since Greek times) that turn into vibrant tropical creations that challenge western constructions of the primitive.
In the winter of 1945/46 Lam traveled with his new wife and Andre Breton (founder of Surrealism) to Haiti where they attended voodoo ceremonies. The strength of those rituals greatly impressed him and added a new dark impetus to his vision. His paintings became more violent in tone, the hybrid figures turned totemic. The tropical landscape gave way to somber, ambiguous spaces, and the bright neoimpressionist colors turned to earth tones, black, grays, and white. He studies African poetry, alchemy, hermetism, esoterism, Tao philosophy, Oceanic art, and Jungian psychoanalysis. These arcane worlds of opposites, of death, rebirth and metamorphosis, revitalized his own pictorial language and produce, in Lam's own words "hallucinating figures with the power to surprise," - that make him unique and famous.
In the early 1950's, Lam returned to Europe and settles in Paris. He divorces his second wife and in 1964 marries for the third and final time to Lou Laurin Lam with whom he had three sons. He established a second home in Albissola Mare, a small Italian seaside town, where he installed his Totem collection, and which was to be his home for the next 20 years.
Throughout the rest of his career, Lam traveled incessantly between Europe and the Americas, sharing his extraordinary intellectual and artistic creativity with the most important figures of the Intelligentsia of the 20th century. He dedicates increasing attention to graphics and ceramics. The outstanding characteristics of his mature art are a sharp and refined draftsmanship, a violent sensuality and a highly personal version of modern primitivism.
In 1978 he suffered a massive stroke that left him confined to a wheelchair. His indomitable spirit helped him find the strength to continue working almost until his death in Paris in 1982. According to his wishes he was cremated and his ashes returned to Cuba.

Season six of American Horror Story is finally here and even though the real theme was revealed, we’re all just as confused as before it was a mystery.
wouldn’t be American Horror Story without plenty of OMG and WTF moments and the first episode of season six is filled with it.
Okay, so before we get right into all of the crazy moments from the first episode, everyone can finally breathe a sigh of relief because the theme has been revealed. Season six of American Horror Story is about…drum roll, please: the chilling and mysterious story of the lost colony of Roanoke in North Carolina and how a young couple got caught up in all the craziness.
This is where things start to get a little confusing and complicated. This season, the show is basically a show within a show. The documentary style show within AHS that is appropriately titled ‘My Roanoke Nightmare’ follows a young married couple by the name of Matt and Shelby who fled from Los Angeles to North Carolina for a fresh new start, only to find out that they probably should’ve stayed in LA. So in real life, Matt and Shelby are played by Andre Holland and Lily Rabe, while their dramatization counterparts are played by Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sarah Paulson, respectively.
Now that we’ve got all of that out of the way, let’s get right into all the WTF moments from the premiere episode. First up on our list is the seriously weird rain shower of teeth that happened for no apparent reason.
Yeah, if I was Shelby, I would’ve booked it out of there, but oddly enough, a TON of teeth falling from the sky didn’t entice her to leave…neither did this weird appearance of these two ghostly girls in her hallway…
While these girls aren’t exactly the colonial ghosts we expected to see in the show, something tells us there’s more to the story than we know.
Anyway, it wasn’t until this creepy array of handmade dolls made of twine and straw that Shelby decided she wanted out of the house…
Which now leads us to the fourth WTF moment on our list. After Shelby frantically left the house upon seeing the dolls and a bunch of other stuff, she raced down the street in her car, only to hit an old lady in the middle of the street.
But to Shelby’s and I’m assuming everyone else’s surprise, the woman got back up on her feet and walked right into the woods. So, this is the part where Shelby should’ve just left the old lady alone and continue on her merry way out of town, but she didn’t.
Instead, Shelby chased the woman into the woods where she got lost and then stumbled upon this lovely man.
Gross.
From tooth-y hailstorms to creepy handmade dolls strung out across trees in the middle of the woods, it’s safe to say that season six of AHS has a pretty good mixture of creepy and scary moments and honestly, this is only just the beginning.

Paul de Ridders of Beez Kneez Catering laid on his latin inspired tapas as well as eight provocative 'salsas'. Coastal Black scored with some heavily favoured (and flavoured) fruit wines and sparkling wines: Blueberry * Blackberry * Raspberry *. Gladstone Brewing company was on hand to offer some their fine micro-brewery's fine craft beers! And of course, plenty of tropical dancing opportunities. What a great evening out.

Cuba has the oldest population in Latin America, and life expectancy rates on a par with the United States, coupled with a birth rate of 1.5, have demographers and policymakers warning of a looming crisis.
Emelia Moreno spends most of her time these days at a neighbourhood day care centre for the elderly in Havana, where she gets meals, and plays dominos and socialises with 1,000 other elderly people who visit daily.
Still vigorous at 75 years old, she lives alone in a small apartment in Central Havana.
Her only child left for the U.S. a decade ago, and she knows that one day she'll be completely dependent on the government because she has no family to take care of her when she grows infirm.
"I had heard people talk about how they felt empty when a family member left, but I had no idea," Moreno said, caressing a photo of her daughter, Yeniset. "It's terrible," she added.
The Convento Belen day care centre in Old Havana helps fill the gap.
The crisis has been years in the making, but is coming to a head at a time when President Raul Castro's government is struggling to implement fledgling reforms that aim to resuscitate an ailing economy.
Universal education, which is generally associated worldwide with low fertility numbers, improved life expectancy rates achieved through universal health care, and free abortions offered through the health care system have all contributed to the problem.
The greying trend can also be traced to a sustained migratory outflow of 35-thousand per year as people seek opportunity in the United States and elsewhere.
Research shows emigrants are increasingly women of child-bearing age, which compounds the problem.
Cuba's National Office of Statistics says some 2 (m) million of the island's 11 (m) million inhabitants, or 17 percent, were over 60 years old last year.
Demographers agree that Cuba's population has topped out at around 11.2 (m) million, and negative growth will be the rule for the foreseeable future.
That's already high compared to a regional rate somewhere north of 9 percent, extrapolating from the most recent U.N. figures available from 2000.
That U.N. study shows Cuba's population is aging even faster than that of China, which has forbidden couples to have more than one child.
Cuba's rate would be typical in a wealthy European nation but Cuba lacks the wealth to cope with it.
By 2021, more Cubans will be leaving the workforce than entering, analysts say.
The trend will get worse with the number of pensioners projected to nearly double to 3.6 (m) million, or a third of the population, by 2035.
"I think that there are certain assurances to growing old in Cuba - spiritual security; not always in a material sense due to the difficulties we have, but we can solve these problems through a national system, a national system of health and security," said Nelson Aguila, the director of the Convento Belen day care centre, which also offers medical care and physical therapy.
In recent years Cuba has implemented a number of measures for the ageing, including an expanded denture distribution program and establishing "grandparents' circles" of elderly citizens who get together for activities and help each other out when the relatives they live with are at work.
The government has also progressively rolled back the retirement age to 60 for women and 65 for men, and recently allowed retirees to return to work and still collect their pensions.
They're also being encouraged to join the class of small-business owners setting up shop under Castro's reforms, though experts say that idea has limited potential.

Most cultural holidays to Cuba will start in Havana, a city of magnificent decaying colonial architecture, monuments and parks, museums and galleries, music and bars and large old American cars. But the first thing you'll probably notice wandering around Havana is the near total lack of consumerism. Cuba is still a communist country with no commercial influence from America, and as such there's almost no evidence at all of the large multinationals we're used to in the West; you won't find any Starbucks or McDonalds here. Jonny here, right now I'm in Havana, and in this short film I'm going to explain a little about tourism in Cuba.
Most cultural holidays to Cuba will start in Havana, a city of magnificent decaying colonial architecture, monuments and parks, museums and galleries, music and bars and large old American cars.
But the first thing you'll probably notice wandering around Havana is the near total lack of consumerism. Cuba is still a communist country with no commercial influence from America, and as such there's almost no evidence at all of the large multinationals we're used to in the West; you won't find any Starbucks or McDonalds here. There are no billboards advertising Coca Cola, there are no glass fronted shopping malls. Which is actually really quite refreshing. The whole city gives you a sense of stepping back in time.
Here in Havana you should enjoy a tour of the cities main sites, an evening at the Bueno Vista Social Club, and trip to one of her many museums. You'll need at least a couple of days, its a very fun place.
In two weeks time Trinidad will celebrate its 500 anniversary. Founded only a few years after Christopher Columbus discovered the America's, the town shot to prominence in the 19th century as one of the world's largest exporters of sugar. With its fine plazas, palaces and churches, and its famous cobbled streets lined by colourful houses, it developed into masterpiece of colonial Caribbean architecture. So well preserved is the town that in 1988 it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status and today forms an important part of most cultural trips to the country.
From Trinidad you might continue east to visit the revolutionary centre of Santiago de Cuba, or head west to enjoy the amazing landscapes around Vinales. Or you might like to do something completely different.
Of course there are plenty of other things to enjoy in Cuba besides the cultural highlights Trinidad and Havana offer. Cuba is blessed with beautiful countryside through which to can go hiking, cycling and horse back riding. Right now I am at a government ranch called La Guabina, in Pinar del Rio province. Each year Wild Frontiers takes the place over to run a horse riding tour of the area and horse riding is primarily what I have come here to do. But if riding is not your thing, from here you can also go on wonderful walks, go fishing or boating on one of the regions many lakes, indulge in some bird watching, or just relax away from the more chaotic life urban Cuba has to offer.
And finally of course there are beaches. As an island over a 1000 kilometres in length, with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, there are hundreds of wonderful beaches just waiting to be enjoyed. And in our experience, Cayo Levisa, where I am now, is one of the best.
Relatively close to Havana, and relatively small in size, Cayo Levisa offers all the usual activities you'd associate with a modern beach resort, like sailing, fishing snorkeling and diving, but is small enough to not have you feeling drowned by mass tourism. As with a number of other similar locations, Cayo Levisa offers a great way to round off your trip to Cuba.
Of course a cultural adventure to Cuba will not be for everyone. With luxury accommodation pretty much non-existent, transport pretty basic, the cuisine though in places surprisingly good, in others rather plain, and a service level that is at best eclectic, those looking for a high end experience will almost certainly be disappointed here.
But if you're the kind of traveller that is interested in seeing a country that hasn't really changed in the last 50 years, a place that has not been overwhelmed by all the trappings of modern consumerism, and are happy to go with the flow in one of the world's last remaining communist countries, then here in Cuba you will find one of the most friendly, authentic, historically interesting and culturally rich places in the whole of Latin America.
My advice is to come soon before it all changes.

While observing life on the streets, one begins to think in the same relaxed tempo of the leisurely-smoked cigars. A visit to a tobacco factory is a must. Cuba’s cigars are world famous. Together with sugar, tobacco is the country’s most important export. The oldest geological formation in Cuba are the Mogotes, well-weathered limestone peaks which, supported by pillars, once covered a large complex of caves. Over many decades, subterranean rivers flooded the earth below and thus created these gigantic grottos. On seven manmade islands in the centre of the Cienaga De Zapata National Park, is the Indian village of Guama. This swampy nature reserve with its dense mangrove forest vegetation offers an ideal sanctuary for many rare water birds. No Cuban town has changed as little in two hundred years than that of Trinidad. In the 18th century, the city experienced great wealth and recognition due to the cultivation of sugar cane and the luxurious palaces and villas of the sugar barons still leave their mark on the city. After a 12 hours bumpy flight from UK we finally landed in Havana where we spent 8 days, then we took a local bus to Viñales and explored for 3 days the stunning nature, tobacco fields and wild beaches around. We decided to go south, so we traveled for 7 hours to Trinidad and we instantly fell in love with the City. One hour ride from Trinidad and we arrived to the French colonial city of Cienfuegos, which we quickly visited before coming back to the north and spending the last 4 nights in that paradise called Varadero.

We were hoping on some early blues or a stray bass to pop in but only sand sharks, skates and robins today. Cecilia Valdés is both a novel by the Cuban Cirilo Villaverde (1812--1894), and a zarzuela (operetta) based on the novel. It is a work of great importance for its quality, and its revelation of the interaction of classes and races in Cuba.
The novel:
The first version of the novel Cecilia Valdés o la Loma del Angel appeared in Havana in 1839; its definitive and larger version, was published in New York in 1882, being re-edited several times. It has never been out of print in Spanish, and there are several English editions (as Cecilia Valdes or Angel Hill). It is widely regarded as the best Cuban novel of the 19th century.
Synopsis
Action (in both the novel and the zarzuela) takes place in colonial Cuba about 1810. The young and beautiful light skinned mulatta, Cecilia Valdés, is the illegitimate daughter of powerful land magnate and slave trader, Candido de Gamboa. Leonardo de Gamboa is his legitimate son. Leonardo falls in love with Cecilia not realizing that she is his own half-sister, and they become lovers. At the same time, hopelessly in love with Cecilia is also another man, the poor black musician, José Dolores Pimienta. His advances Cecilia rejects; and she conceives Leonardo's son.
Love between Leonardo and Cecilia does not last, however. He abandons her and becomes betrothed to a white aristocratic woman, a certain Isabel Ilincheta. Cecilia turns to the faithful Pimienta to plan revenge. On the day of his wedding he is assassinated on the steps of the cathedral by Pimienta who acts on the instigation of Cecilia. He is executed, and she is thrown in an insane asylum.
Cecilia Valdés reveals the intricate problems of race relations in Cuba. There are the elite social circles of Spanish-born and creole whites; the growing number of mulattos, of which Cecilia is one, and the blacks, some slaves, some freed men. The blacks are also divided between those who were born in Africa and those who were born in Cuba, those who worked on the sugar plantation and those who worked in the households of the wealthy in Havana. Cecilia Valdés is a canvas displaying the sexual, social, and racial interaction of the Cubans of the day.
Zarzuela:
The zarzuela is in two acts with music by Gonzalo Roig. The libretto was by Agustin Rodríguez and José Sánchez-Arcilla, based on the novel Cecilia Valdés, o la Loma del Angelby Cirilo Villaverde. The storyline is about a tragedy of manners, love and revenge, in colonial Cuban society of the early 19th century.

Critique:
In Villaverde's novel (completed in 1882), the melodramatic plot serves as a background for social life in Cuba, with slavery, injustice, crises and personal tragedies, following colorful presentation in detailed characterization and description, even to the point that plot itself loses its pace at times, long before reaching its climax, as if author had lost interest in his story and wanted to finish it as fast as possible.
In Roig's zarzuela, however, dramatic element is more exposed, more consistent and in swift action, presented as an interesting unrolling story pointing toward inevitable climax, which shows great talent and theatrical experience on the part of the composer, the piece containing mixture of traditional Cuban music, with all its genres, forms and vivid rhythms and dances, interlaced in good balance with predominantly romantic in style music of the Western tradition, particularly in melody and orchestration.

Cecilia Valdés is both a novel by the Cuban Cirilo Villaverde (1812--1894), and a zarzuela (operetta) based on the novel. It is a work of great importance for its quality, and its revelation of the interaction of classes and races in Cuba.
The novel:
The first version of the novel Cecilia Valdés o la Loma del Angel appeared in Havana in 1839; its definitive and larger version, was published in New York in 1882, being re-edited several times. It has never been out of print in Spanish, and there are several English editions (as Cecilia Valdes or Angel Hill). It is widely regarded as the best Cuban novel of the 19th century.
Synopsis
Action (in both the novel and the zarzuela) takes place in colonial Cuba about 1810. The young and beautiful light skinned mulatta, Cecilia Valdés, is the illegitimate daughter of powerful land magnate and slave trader, Candido de Gamboa. Leonardo de Gamboa is his legitimate son. Leonardo falls in love with Cecilia not realizing that she is his own half-sister, and they become lovers. At the same time, hopelessly in love with Cecilia is also another man, the poor black musician, José Dolores Pimienta. His advances Cecilia rejects; and she conceives Leonardo's son.
Love between Leonardo and Cecilia does not last, however. He abandons her and becomes betrothed to a white aristocratic woman, a certain Isabel Ilincheta. Cecilia turns to the faithful Pimienta to plan revenge. On the day of his wedding he is assassinated on the steps of the cathedral by Pimienta who acts on the instigation of Cecilia. He is executed, and she is thrown in an insane asylum.
Cecilia Valdés reveals the intricate problems of race relations in Cuba. There are the elite social circles of Spanish-born and creole whites; the growing number of mulattos, of which Cecilia is one, and the blacks, some slaves, some freed men. The blacks are also divided between those who were born in Africa and those who were born in Cuba, those who worked on the sugar plantation and those who worked in the households of the wealthy in Havana. Cecilia Valdés is a canvas displaying the sexual, social, and racial interaction of the Cubans of the day.
Zarzuela:
The zarzuela is in two acts with music by Gonzalo Roig. The libretto was by Agustin Rodríguez and José Sánchez-Arcilla, based on the novel Cecilia Valdés, o la Loma del Angelby Cirilo Villaverde. The storyline is about a tragedy of manners, love and revenge, in colonial Cuban society of the early 19th century.

Spent the day fishing with Gregory. We were hoping on some early blues or a stray bass to pop in but only sand sharks, skates and robins today. Was one striper caught by a sharp regular jetty angler and a beauty it was at 19-20lbs in the end of the video right before we left. Tried something diffrent with this vid. Its LONG with lots of talking and some laughing with Gregory. YOU MAY NEED TO TURN YOUR AUDIO UP. Gregory been fishing for a good whiles and never caught on to circle hooks until today I hope. Try them out with these willing abundunt bitters to get a feel for them. Although fishing has a feel that comes natural or with practice just remember with circles, leave as much of the hook exsposed as you can, let the fish time to turn and move about 6 seconds is enough, slowly reel and/or lift your rod tip, finally apply gradual pressure. I do not use then exclusively but they are great to use. I hope you enjoy the video!
