Richter 10

Richter 10 is a 1996 novel by Arthur C. Clarke and Mike McQuay. The protagonist is Lewis Crane, who develops a hatred of earthquakes due to a major earthquake hitting his house when he is seven years old, killing his parents. The book's title is a reference to the Richter scale, on which 10 was considered (when the scale was devised) to be the most power an earthquake was likely to ever have.

The plot deals with predicting earthquakes months or years in advance, and eventually banishing them forever from earth by stopping all tectonic activity.

Plot summary

There are four defining episodes in the story, and a variety of subplots and minor threads — many of them unrelated to the main story. The story begins late in the 20th century, and tracks the life of the main protagonist, Lewis Crane. The first of four episodes opens the story. An earthquake in California in the late 20th century has left seven-year-old Lewis Crane a crippled, homeless orphan.

The second major episode shows Crane as an adult, world's foremost earthquake expert, a Nobel laureate, and a ruthless scientist and entrepreneur dedicated to relieve the misery of those affected by earthquakes. He is also the moving force behind Foundation, an organization dedicated to scientific research on earthquakes. His Foundation has just perfected the technology to predict earthquakes to within minutes of due time, intensity, and geographical areas that will be affected. His first prediction is for Sado island in Japan—most of the island will be destroyed, as will the inhabited village of Aikawa.

Dubí

Dubí (Czech pronunciation: [ˈdubiː]; German: Eichwald) is a town in the Ústí nad Labem Region, in the Czech Republic, near Teplice in the Ore Mountains, with 7,792 residents. It is an important transit point to Germany on European route E55, and the border crossing Cínovec is located within the town limits. There is a spa with mineral waters and a china factory there. The railroad line (Most -) Dubí - Moldava v Krušných horách, that passes through the town, was declared a national monument in 1998. After the Velvet Revolution, the town received bad publicity due to rampant prostitution, fueled by the close proximity to Germany, location on a main truck route and low purchasing power in the Czech Republic; municipal authorities have been struggling with this issue with some recent successes.

History

Dubí was first mentioned in the period of 1494–1498 as a village of tin miners (in Czech cín, giving the name to nearby Cínovec). Rapid development started in the 19th century. First, a new road to Saxony was built, followed by a spa (1862) and in (1864) A.Tschinkel purchased a mill Buschmühle where he established porcelain factory that in 1871 changed name to "Eichwalder Porzellan und Ofenfabriken Bloch and Co." Furthermore, a new railroad (1884) made Dubí a popular holiday spa resort, visited by Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Jan Neruda, Václav Talich and others. its land is very rich.

Alpha Delphini

Alpha Delphini (α Del, α Delphini) is a multiple star in the constellation Delphinus. It also has the name Sualocin, which was given to it as a practical joke by the astronomer Niccolò Cacciatore; the name is the Latinized version (Nicolaus) of his given name, spelled backwards.

In Chinese, 瓠瓜 (Hù Guā), meaning Good Gourd, refers to an asterism consisting of α Delphini, γ² Delphini, δ Delphini, β Delphini and ζ Delphini. Consequently, α Delphini itself is known as 瓠瓜一 (Hù Guā yī, English: the First Star of Good Gourd.).

Beta Delphini

Beta Delphini (Beta Del, β Delphini, β Del) is a binary star in the constellation of Delphinus. As a practical joke, the astronomer Niccolò Cacciatore gave it the name Rotanev, which is a reversal of his Latinized family name, Venator. The name first appeared in Giuseppe Piazzi's Palermo Catalogue, published in 1814. Beta Delphini was found to be a binary star system in 1873 by the American astronomer S. W. Burnham.

In Chinese, 瓠瓜 (Hù Guā), meaning Good Gourd, refers to an asterism consisting of β Delphini, α Delphini, γ² Delphini, δ Delphini, and ζ Delphini. Consequently, β Delphini itself is known as 瓠瓜二 (Hù Guā-er, English: the Second Star of Good Gourd.).

This system consists of a pair of F-type stars stars that orbit each other with a period of 26.66 years and an eccentricity of 0.36. The plane of the orbit is inclined by an angle of 61° to the line of sight from the Earth. The two stars have an angular separation of about 0.44 arcseconds, making them a challenge to resolve with a telescope. The larger member of the pair is a giant star with 1.75 times the mass and 24 times the luminosity of the Sun, while the secondary component is a subgiant star that has 1.47 times the Sun's mass and around 8 times the Sun's luminosity. The system is around 1.8 billion years old.

DEL2

DEL2, also known as DEL II, is the second-level of ice hockey in Germany, below the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (German Ice Hockey League). Founded in 2013, it is administered by the ESBG.

In September 2015 the DEL and DEL2 agreed to reintroduce promotion and relegation between the two leagues from the 2017–18 season onwards. The DEL2 champion would then have the opportunity to be promoted, provided it fulfilled the licensing requirements of the DEL, while the last-placed DEL club would be relegated.
