Set It Off is a 1996 action-crime-thriller film directed by F. Gary Gray, and stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise (in her theatrical debut), as four close friends in Los Angeles, California who decide to plan and execute a bank robbery. They decide to do so for different reasons, although all four want better for themselves and their families.
Francesca "Frankie" Sutton (Vivica A. Fox) is a Los Angeles bank teller who witnesses a robbery. Shortly after the incident, the bank fires Frankie after the police uncover a connection between her and Darnell, one of the robbers. Frankie reluctantly gets a job at a janitorial company where her friends Lita "Stoney" Newsome (Jada Pinkett), Cleopatra "Cleo" Sims (Queen Latifah), and Tisean "T.T." Williams (Kimberly Elise) already work.
Stoney's brother Stevie is wrongfully gunned down by the police after they mistake him for one of the men involved in the previous robbery. The incident prompts Cleo to suggest that they rob a bank themselves. While Frankie is happy to go along with the plan, T.T. is initially opposed the idea. However, when an accident at work leads to her toddler being taken away by social services, T.T. commits to the plot as well.

Organized Noize is an Atlanta-based American hip hop production company made up of Rico Wade, Ray Murray and Sleepy Brown.
Among the hit records they have worked on include TLC's "Waterfalls", En Vogue's "Don't Let Go (Love)", and Ludacris' "Saturday (Oooh Ooooh)". They are most notable for producing a large amount of material for OutKast (including all of Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and "So Fresh, So Clean" from Stankonia) and Goodie Mob (including all of Soul Food and "They Don't Dance No Mo" from Still Standing). Both groups are part of Organized Noize's Dungeon Family collective, which also includes Slimm Cutta Calhoun and Joi, among others. In 2006, they contributed additional music to the film Miami Vice. In 2010 they produced several songs on the critically acclaimed Island/Def Jam solo debut from Big Boi titled Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty.

ET was on set to talk to the rapper-turned-actress -- just look
at those cornrows!! -- about striking a balance between her already successful
music career and growing acting resume, which included three seasons of Living Single.

“I don't ever think I'll have to choose between music and
acting,” Latifah said at the time. “I mean, I won't choose between music and
acting. They're two different things that satisfy me in two different ways.
They satisfy my creative soul.”
It was a bold promise for the then-26-year-old and one that
she didn’t initially keep. It would be five years before the rapper followed up
the 1993 album, Black Reign, with new
music. In 1998, she not only released Order
in the Court, but also returned to the big screen with roles in Living Out Loud and Sphere.
Then, in 2002, Hollywood took notice when Latifah combined
both her talents for the Oscar-nominated role of Matron “Mama” Morton in Chicago.

A decade later, following three albums and several hit
roles, Latifah is doing it again with the HBO film, Bessie, about the life and struggles of the legendary blues singer.
This, which took over two decades to get off the ground, is Latifah’s most raw
performance yet.
“If I can't put my thing on it like I've done some
extraordinary work at some point in it then I haven't been fulfilled,” she said
back on set of the 1996 film. With Bessie
-- and the work in between -- there's plenty for Latifah to feel proud of.
