Info :
Neither Europe nor Asia, Azerbaijan is an incredible tangle of contradictions and contrasts. It’s a fascinating nexus of ancient historical empires. Azerbaijan has for centuries been regarded as the threshold of Western civilisation and Eastern tradition. It is a country in which people with diverse backgrounds, religions and languages have struggled to live together, forging a national identity that is always somewhere in between East and West. Azerbaijan is probably where the Vikings came from, and definitely has the most mud volcanoes in the world. Sundry Nobels and Rothschilds made their fortunes on Baku oil and helped to found the world's first oil and gas industry here. Azerbaijan was, in 1918, the world's first Islamic democracy. Today, it’s a new nation finding its feet as it emerges from a war-torn post-Soviet chrysalis on a petroleum-funded gust of optimism. Surrounded by semi-desert on the oil-rich Caspian Sea, the nation’s cosmopolitan capital, Baku, is a dynamic boomtown, where flashy limousines and mushrooming skyscrapers sweep around a picturesque Unesco-listed ancient core.
The most rugged terrain is in the Southeast of Azerbaijan, which of the three Caucasian states has the greatest land area. Azerbaijan is dominated by the shoreline of the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus mountain range, and flatlands in the middle of the country. Landscape is characterized by dramatic elevation changes over short distances, from lowlands to highlands, with nearly half of the country considered mountainous. The word Azerbaijan is a distortion of the Greek word Atropates, given by the successors of Alexander the Great to the region of ancient Iran and inhabited by mysterious people known as the Albans. The word Atropates means “protected by fire,” a reference to the fires in the Zoroastrian temples and to the to natural burning of surface oil deposits. Although the Albans disappeared from history, each and every ethnic group now present in the region claims ties to their ancient heritage.
Citrus fruits, tea, and rice are grown in the lowlands, while the slopes are covered with vineyards and orchards. Besides being a major producer of grapes, Azerbaijani agriculture is known for olives, saffron, pomegranates, nuts, vegetables, figs, and the sesame plant for seeds and oil. The fishing industry is important to the economy, with the catch consisting mostly of herring, carp, and sturgeon roe that is processed into caviar. Agriculture is the second largest industry after petroleum exploration, processing, and transportation, which is the backbone of the Azerbaijani economy.

Today, we would like to talk about a miraculous country of Azerbaijan with its unlimited natural resources, centuries-old culture, history and ancient people, whose lifestyle presents a unique and harmonious combination of the traditions and ceremonies of different cultures and civilizations.
The science and the enlightenment in Azerbaijan have a centuries-old history. The Baku State University was founded in 1919; the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan play an exceptional role in scientific, educational and cultural development of Azerbaijan. Local scientists are currently studying such important issues as the depths of the Caspian Sea, space exploration and the secrets of human brain.
The existing educational system of Azerbaijan is made up of dozens of higher educational institutions and technical schools, thousands of high schools, colleges and lyceums.
One of the most important problems which is currently solved by local scientists is environmental protection of the Caspian Sea and different regions of Azerbaijan. Such natural reserves as Gizilagach, Shirvan, Zagatala, Aggol, Girkan and others, were established due to the efforts of Azerbaijani scientists.
Through the decades, the local industry was successfully represented by oil producing, petrochemical and oil processing enterprises. The agricultural industry is famous for cotton-growing, viticulture, vegetable-growing and cattle-breeding.
If one compares the economy of Azerbaijan with a living body, it becomes evident that oil flows in the veins of Azerbaijan. The oil and gas resources of Azerbaijan have made this place famous in every part of the world from the ancient times.
Azerbaijan has always been famous for its sources of eternal fires - the atashgehs. There is a place called Yanardag (blazing mountain) in Absheron and thermal springs in some parts of Nakhichivan, Kelbejar, Masali, Lenkoran, Babadag.
In Surakhani, there is an eternal fire place. From the ancient times the fire worshippers from remote places and even the Indian priests were coming to Absheron in search of fire and finding it here. They built their main temples here in Surakhani and Ateshgah.
The word Azerbaijan brings its main wealth - oil - before the eyes. Oil is not only the wealth, but the fame as well. People were coming to Azerbaijan from distant places for this specific taste and colored puddle under the ground. Throughout the centuries, camelcades carried waterskins of oil in both eastern and western directions. The Azerbaijani oil is not used exclusively for the electricity production, but also as a valuable medicine for a variety of diseases. There has been an increasing demand for oil throughout the centuries.
From the beginning of the 20th century, the continuous industrial development around the world, caused an unprecedented growth of the demand for oil. It was at this time oil turned from an everyday mean into an industrial product. Oil become the most important problem in the world in the 20th century - the century of science and technologies. Oil-producing countries have acquired special oil policies and oil strategies in this connection.
Azerbaijan is currently involved into the implementation of huge energy projects. Oil and gas projects are successfully implemented in the Azeri Caspian sector. Azerbaijan is a country, which plays an extremely important role in the Caspian and Caucasian regions, particularly in the development of transport infrastructure in the Caucasus and the implementation of energy projects. It was the region's first country to explore the huge energy potential, to form an absolutely new economic model in the regional development, and to expand political and economic relations between Europe and Asia.

Your trip to Moscow, Russia is bound to be a special one. From the multicolored spires of St. Basil’s Cathedral to the sturdy red walls of the Kremlin, there is much to see and do in this stunning city.
Named after the Moskva River—which flows through the city—Moscow has long been at the forefront of the creative world. Tour Moscow to follow in the footsteps of Tolstoy and Chekhov, among others, and join in the sense of pride Russia feels for its literary tradition. Moscow has named a number of its parks and open spaces after its poets and authors, so take a break at the fountain in Pushkin Square, or rest beneath the leafy trees in Gorky Park. When you’ve gotten your fill of literary splendor, head to the Memorial Museum of Cosmonauts, where you can learn about the Soviet Union’s efforts to reach the stars and the epic space race that lasted from 1955 to 1972.
Moscow is a city of creativity and innovation, but is also very much aware of its own history; as such, a haunting part of any Moscow sightseeing is a visit to the Fallen Monument Park. After the fall of the Soviet Union, countless statues and monuments were removed from their pedestals and moved to this park. Over the years, more modern artwork and sculptures have been added, turning the park into a strange, yet peaceful graveyard of former icons.

Come to Dubai, the ancient City of Gold, for your next vacation.
Modernity and antiquity collide in this vibrant city. Shop at the same spice market locals have been visiting for generations, then visit the stores in the Gold Souk, a jewelry-centered traditional marketplace. For a more modern shopping experience, go to the Dubai Mall, home to over 1200 stores, an underwater zoo, and KidZania®, a “city” where children can roleplay various careers.
To soak up some of the legendary Dubai sunshine, simply step outside. Take in the view of the city from the observation deck of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Continue your Dubai tour by wandering through the exotic buildings and resorts, or visit some of the public beaches. If you’d like to try something a little different and don’t mind paying a small fee, you can also attend local hotel beaches even if you aren’t staying there.
You can’t finish your Dubai sightseeing without a trip into the desert itself. Ride a camel, go sandboarding, or just stand out on the dunes and marvel at the beauty of it all.

The "Amazing" Azerbaijan! Documentary Film
Amazing Azerbaijan! pulls back the glittery facade that this oil-rich nation presented to the world when hosting Eurovision 2012, telling personal stories of human rights abuses to which Europe's leaders have turned a blind eye.
A sugary duet with the unintentionally ironic title "Running Scared" secured the contest for the former Soviet Republic on the Easternmost tip of Europe. The competition

Armenian Drone Records Mortar strikes On Azerbaijani Positions
Long running tensions are at a near breaking point between Armenia and Azerbaijan as cross-border shelling has escalated in recent days.
The two former Soviet states fought a sustained war over border disputes which resulted in tens of thousands killed and a fragile cease-fire signing in 1994. Although cease-fire infractions are common, the last two weeks have seen an escalation of hostilities. Fo

Azerbaijan’s $100 billion Khazar Islands is the perfect example of everything that’s still wrong with the world’s power structure. It will contain the creatively named Azerbaijan Tower--which will be the world’s tallest building, about 800 feet taller than the current leader, the Burj Khalifa. It’ll be surrounded by 55 artificial islands built in the Caspian Sea from chunks of earth ripped out of a nearby mountain, which - in the end - will be completely destroyed.

With just days to go to the final of this year's Eurovision Song Contest, Panorama has been undercover inside its hosts Azerbaijan, to discover the extraordinary truth about this secretive country and its approach to the world's most watched non-sporting event.
Reporter Paul Kenyon finds out how the contest has been used as a tool of intimidation: viewers have been interrogated for voting for the nation's long-term enemy, Armenia; a protest singer has been told to flee before Eurovision or he will be thrown in jail; and dozens have had their homes bulldozed to make way for the Eurovision event itself.
The US embassy in Baku has compared the ruling family to the Mafia. The regime has held onto power through a combination of rigged elections, jailing opponents, and by irregular control of the country's vast oil wealth. So, why did the organisers of the world's best well-loved music event agree to host it in Azerbaijan?

Azerbaijan in World War II. Objective Baku - Hitler Battle for Oil. National Geographic. Azerbaijan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CYx1lVBldw Azerbaijan, Baku, Hitler, Staling, Soviet Union, Battle of Stalingrad, Caspian Sea, Azeri People, Azerbaijani People.
Objective Baku - How Hitler Lost the Battle for Oil. National Geographic Documentary Commemorating to the Victory over Nazism during World War Two and pays tribute to Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani people contributed to The Great Victory.
The plot of the documentary reveals the role of the Azerbaijani people in defeating Nazism and the strategic importance of the Azerbaijani oil during the war.
In the course of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), 700 thousand men were drafted in Azerbaijan, 400 thousand out of them never made it back home. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan’s input to the war efforts was not only restricted to human resources. 128 residents of Azerbaijan were conferred on title of Hero of the Soviet Union for military valour and feats shown during World War II. Hazi Aslanov received this title twice. There were 42 ethnic Azerbaijanis who received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and 14 of them were awarded posthumously. Lieutenant Israfil Mammadov was the first Azerbaijani who became Hero of the Soviet Union.
The role of the Azerbaijani oil in the Victory shall not be overseen. E.g. 72 per cent of the Soviet crude was produced in Baku. This implies that 7 out of 10 tanks or war planes were fuelled by Baku’s ‘black gold’.
Objective Baku took 14 months of substantial reseach in Azerbaijan, Germany, the US, the UK, France and Russia, with over 200 hours of videomaterials, photographs and other documents scrutinized.
The film provides a totally new approach to the history of World War II, i.e. through the prism of oil. The documentary also features some unique video snapshots of the WW2 battles never shown to this day in a totally new format of restored color film.
The Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic entered World War II with the whole Soviet Union, on June 22, 1941. German command gave the great consideration to oil pools of Baku and set a task to take Baku and oil and gas area of Baku under their control in the course of the Battle of the Caucasus.
Baku and the North Caucasus were the main oil sources for the whole economy of the USSR. Reserves of strategic raw materials such as deposit of tungsten-molybdenum ore were in these places. Loss of the Caucasus could cause a significant influence upon general course of the war against the USSR, and that is why Hitler had chosen namely this direction as the main Group of armies, created for attack to the Caucasus, was given coded identification “A”.
Tasks of the group “A” were the following: to surround and destroy the Southern Front in the southern and south-western parts of Rostov-on-Don, which drew off over the Don River, and to capture the North Caucasus; then it was intended to pass round Greater Caucasus with a group from the South, capturing Novorossiysk and Tuapse and with the other group from the East, capturing oil regions of Grozny and Baku. Simultaneously, it was intended to overcome the Dividing Ridge in its central part over its passes and entrance to Georgia, with a bypass manoeuvre.
German army approached the South Caucasus. Even the date of seizure of Baku – September 26, 1942 - was fixed. Defense regions were created around Nalchik, Vladikavkaz, Grozny, Makhachkala and Baku. The first stage of the battle of the Caucasus was from July to December, 1942. German-Romanian army, suffering a great loss, could reach foothills of Greater Caucasus and the Terek River. But, generally, “edelweiss” plan of Germany failed. Only during the 1st stage of the battle the “A” group of armies lost about 100,000 people and Germans couldn’t burst the South Caucasus and the Near East.
From August 25 to September 17, 1941 the Great Britain and the Soviet Union carried out a joint campaign under a code name “Consent”. Defense of Iranian oil deposits and pools and their capture by German army and their allies, and also defense of transportation corridor (southern corridor), along which allies supplied the Soviet Union according to Lend-Lease, was its main goal. During World War II, Rezā Shāh refused to deploy troops of the Great Britain and the Soviet Union at their request. But, for instance, according to the 5th and 6th points of the agreement between Soviet Russia and Iran of 1921, the USSR had a right to deploy its troops in the territory of Iran in case of appearance of any threat to its southern borders.
Armed forces of the allies invaded Iran, dethroned Reza Pahlavi and established their control over railway roads and oil deposits of the country, in course of the campaign. Meanwhile, troops of the United Kingdom occupied southern Iran, and troops of the Soviet Union – northern part of the country (Iranian Azerbaijan).

The competition claims to be an apolitical celebration of European unity, but when the President of Azerbaijan declared the victory a national achievement he offered the nation up to the harsh glare of the international spotlight - for better or worse. According to international observers, the government's record on press freedom, transparency, and democratic principals leaves much to be desired.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Azerbaijan, a former member of the USSR, today an increasingly modern country, with an oil-based economy. Baku, the capital of the country, has been dubed the “Dubai of the Caucasus”.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Azerbaijan gets its name from Atropates, a Persian nobleman. He ruled over the present-day Azerbaijan. The region that encompassed Atropates' kingdom come to be known to the Greeks as "Media Atropatene" after Atropates, and eventually simply "Atropatene". The Arsacids called it 'Aturpatakan' in Parthian, as did also the Sassanids who eventually succeeded them. Eventually Middle Iranian 'Aturpatakan' became 'Azerbaijan', whence, according to one etymological theory, the modern nation of Azerbaijan and the Iranian province of Azerbaijan. The treasure or the treasury of fire or the land of fire can be replaced with the word Azerbaijan.
2. The Absheron peninsula in Azerbaijan has the rare geological wonder of Burning Mountain, where due to natural gas, the mountains burn through out the year.
3. Prior to eighteenth century, Azerbaijan was a Christian country and it was only later that the inhabitants were converted into Islam. Eastern Christianity managed to retain its influence on the region in 10th-11th centuries, a state which lasted untill the 18th century.
4. The Gobustan Nature Park has got thousands of rock paintings that give a peek into the lives of the pre-historic inhabitants of Azerbaijan. The country is also home to the first known fireplace and one of the ancient proto-human habitations in the human history that date back to 700,000 to 500,000 years ago. The Azikh Cave, which is also the largest cave in Azerbaijan covering eight thousand square meters, is one of the proto-human sites in Azerbaijan.
5. Oil Rocks (Neft Dashlar) in Azerbaijan in the world’s first and largest town built on stilts at sea. It lies 100 km (62 mi) away from the Azerbaijani capital Baku, and 55 km (34 mi) from the nearest shore in the Caspian Sea.
6. The prosperous city of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is the most cosmopolitan in the region, boosted by oil revenues. The first oil well was drilled nearby.
7. The mountainous region of Lerik in southern Azerbaijan is well known for being a homeland of centenarians. It's the only place in the world where you'll find an official museum of centenarians. Some say that in this region, dying before you are 90 is a big embarrassment. Even at this age people of this region are in perfect healthy condition and perform daily physical work like mowing grass, chopping wood and walking animals to far meadows and grasslands. They say their secret of living long and healthy life is the hard work, healthy natural food they raise, water from mountains and fresh air. The longest age record in this region is 145, 150 and 160 years, all men.

For the first time since the cease-fire was signed, Azerbaijani tanks have fired over the border and destroyed Armenian targets.
Azerbaijan insists the acts were retaliatory measures in response to Armenian mortars and machine gun attacks, a claim that may be supported by this video reportedly showing Armenian mortars landing on what appears to be entrenched Azerbaijani military positions.
Azerbaijan claims to have shot down two Armenian drones in the last week, at least one of which was a DJI Inspire 1 quadcopter.

Nick Fraser Storyville Series Editor Now that the oil price appears to be rising inexorably at the pumps, newspapers are full of gloomy predictions related to our increasing addiction to perishable reserves of oil. Bill Cran's series takes a somewhat different approach. We are in fact still amply supplied with oil on planet earth. The problem is that most of it lies in what we cosseted addicts regard as the wrong places. Getting enough oil to fill George Bush's SUV requires dealing with nasty governments or destroying the wilderness. But the relationship between oil companies, consumers and those who live where the oil is extracted is changing very rapidly. It is becoming possible for native populations to obstruct oil companies. Cran's series leaves one with the feeling that there are no easy answers - but that, given the hysteria surrounding the subject, is no bad thing. It's also ravishingly shot.

http://janson.com On February 12, 1918, Enver Pasha sends a Turkish force into eastern Turkey, now void of Russian soldiers. About 20,000 troops of the Armenian National Army, who had fought alongside the Russians, stand in the way.
They are well-equipped with guns and supplies, but cannot hold out for long against the Turks and begin a fighting retreat toward the Caucasus. Envers army quickly captures the port of Trabzon and the strategic city of Erzurum, where the Turks had been routed two years earlier by the Russians. By the end of April, the Turks control most of the region around Lake Van, including the cities of Van, Bitlis and Mush.

The fourth installment in the series of Staalplaat re-editions of older Muslimgauze recordings, is an 800 copies limited edition of a 1997 production entitled "Sandtrafikar". Its seven tracks further explore the realms of murkier percussive suites and introduce the spoken language element (middle eastern languages) as a narration that accompanies part of the record. Another recurring element in this album (and in many others) are the bells. Electronics moves from the back to the front in several parts, and ranges from simple noise floor to predominant rhythmical part, while maintaining a pretty minimal approach. In fact, "Sandtrafikar" is a nice effort in combining ethnic ambiance and flavors with electronic layers and patterns as it sneaks from percussive parts with udu, darbuka and the like to electronic suites, like the second track, where real (and saturated) percussions are only used as embellishments on top of a pulsing minimal electro-beat.

English/Nat
After nearly a century of isolation the city of Baku - capital of Azerbaijan - is booming again as Western companies scramble for a slice of offshore oil riches in the Caspian Sea.
An international oil consortium this week announced a new pipeline route, setting the stage for large-scale production to start up next year.
Cut off for nearly a century of revolution, war and Soviet rule, Baku is booming again as Western companies scramble for a slice of Azerbaijan's offshore oil riches in the Caspian Sea.
An international oil consortium this week announced a new pipeline route, setting the stage for large-scale production to start next year.
Baku's oil boom at the end of the last century made the Rothschilds and the Nobels wealthy and powerful competitors to Standard Oil.
Their riches were consumed in the revolutionary conflagration of 1917. Jerry-built oil rigs now choke the bay. An evil haze hangs over the Soviet-era oil refineries.
Treacly oil bleeds from old wells into the Caspian. But the oil barons are back, in the guise of the 11-member consortium called the Azerbaijan International Operating Company (AIOC).
The consortium plans to produce 700-thousand barrels of oil a day from two offshore fields by the year 2000, requiring direct investment of eight (b) billion (US) dollars.
Western companies believe the former Soviet republic sits over some of the most important oil deposits in the world.
The rush is now on to see who will be able to capitalise on this huge potential.
SOUNDBITE:
"Oil developments in this region are going to be taking place I hope in a rather rapid fashion over the next few years and there's going to be a lot of oil that will come not only out of Azerbaijan, not only out of the AIOC concession but out of others as well."
SUPER CAPTION: Richard Kauzlarich, US Ambassador
The shaky former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan stands to earn over 90 (b) billion dollars from the project, with others in the offing.
Already, a crop of expensive stores, bars and restaurants has opened to lighten the pockets of wealthy, Western oil workers and executives.
For homesick Americans, Charlie's Bar sells hamburgers and steaks.
Nearby stands the Lord Nelson pub where English beer is freighted in for thirsty British oilmen.
Landlord Charlie Christmas is convinced he's on to a winner.
SOUNDBITE:
"I think Baku is a boom town. If you're not in it now, you've missed it. You've got to be in, I was exactly a year ago. If you're not in now, you've lost it."
SUPER CAPTION: Charlie Christmas, pub owner
Westerners have flocked to Baku lured by the promise of easy money. But political instability in the Caucasus is likely to make the Baku oil business a high stakes game.

Oil is one of the most important and precious natural resources on the planet, but would you ever take a bath in it?
In the energy-rich nation of Azerbaijan, you now can. Situated in the capital Baku, the Naftalan Health Centre offers its customers a chance to dip in the black gold.
Seb, an Australian tourist to the region who was visiting the facility, described the experience:
"It's pretty OK, it's about the same temperature as a normal bath, it's a bit like chocolate I suppose in texture, reminds me of those chocolate fountains at the malls. Pretty warm, pretty painless, does not really smell much," he said.
Bathing in Naftalan oil for medicinal purposes is a practice that stretches as far back as the 6th century. But there has been criticism as well that the oil contains naphthalene hydrocarbons, a possible carcinogen. The spa's doctor Hashim Hashimov said that the treatment could cure up to 70 ailments.
"Naftalan kills everything, viruses, bacteria and fungi. It's consistence is unique and pure, it does not contain any dirt," he said.

Baku (Azerbaijani: Bakı), sometimes spelled as Baki or Bakou, is the capital, largest city, and largest port of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus region. It is located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, that projects into the Caspian Sea. The city consists of two principal parts: the downtown and the old Inner City (21.5 ha). Baku's urban population at the beginning of 2009 was estimated at just over three million people.
Baku is divided into eleven administrative districts (raions) and 48 townships. Among these are the townships on islands in the Baku Bay and the town of Oil Rocks built on stilts in the Caspian Sea, 60 km (37 mi) away from Baku. The Inner City of Baku along with the Shirvanshah's Palace and Maiden Tower were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. According to the Lonely Planet's ranking Baku is also amongst the world's top ten destinations for urban nightlife.
The city also serves as the main economic hub of Azerbaijan. Many sizeable Azerbaijani institutions have their headquarters there, including SOCAR, one of the world's top 100 companies. The Baku International Sea Trade Port, sheltered by the islands of the Baku Archipelago to the east and the Absheron Peninsula to the north, is capable of handling two million tons of general and dry bulk cargoes per year.

Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City, on the southern tip of Vietnam, is one of South East Asia’s emerging boom cities. Still affectionately known by many as Saigon, this is Vietnam’s largest city and its economic engine room.
Ho Chi Minh City has an irrepressible soul and an entrepreneurial energy that hums day and night. Despite almost a century of colonialism and brutal conflict, today this city is renowned for its warm hospitality, which even extends to former foes. A youthful enthusiasm flows through this city, just like the stream of scooters, motorbikes and cars that flow endlessly through its chaotic streets.
In Ho Chi Minh City, it feels as though the future has arrived… and yet the past is never far away. Wide boulevards built during the French colonial era are lined with cutting edge skyscrapers, while jasmine scented temples gently rub shoulders with chic rooftop bars
More than 9 million people call Ho Chi Minh City home and the dynamic energy of its streets is part of its charm. The city is divided into a series of numbered districts and District One is where almost all of the city’s main attractions can be found.
As the sun goes down, find yourself a seat at one of Ho Chi Minh City’s famous rooftop bars, a perfect way to soak up the buzz of the city.
Dynamic, chaotic and energizing. Ho Chi Minh city may have burst onto the world stage as a battle zone but today, there is no better destination to plug in to the pulse of 21st century Asia.

http://www.euronews.com/ In this edition of Azerbaijan Life we go to the capital of the country, Baku, to see and hear how the city is moving into the future.
Baku is on the western shores of the Caspian Sea. Its heartbeat is the vibrant old city.
Scholars believe the earliest written evidence of Baku dates back to the first century AD. Sieges and battles have raged around its walls since. Baku's history reflects the changing cultures and architectural styles here at the crossroads between Asia and Europe.
Khanum Babyeva, a guide at the Research and Cultural Centre explained more about the buildings: "Baku is a very, very interesting city because Azerbaijani people call it a city of contrasts. Why a city of contrasts? It's because of this new construction and the old places. The Maiden's Tower and then the Palace with the Minaret. Behind me are three beautiful new buildings which are the symbol of modern Baku."
The iconic flame towers, the facades of which are turned into gigantic display screens at night dominate the city's skyline. The country's centuries old carpet making industry is celebrated in a stunning new museum as a traditional craft and culture meets futuristic design which reflects the story of this developing city.
"For tourists its is very interesting as in one city they can see different periods of time, different cultures. In order to just observe these cultures they had to go to Spain, Arab countries or to central Asia but in one city they can see all these cultures all this architecture," added Khanum Babyeva.
Within the walls of the old city - a UNESCO world heritage site - is what is to date the world's only private museum of its kind.
Visitors can view over 5,000 published books in miniature, collected from 64 countries many by authors known across the globe.
Zarifa Salakhova the museum owner explained her interest in these tiny books. "Minature books is an art form and the smaller the book the greater the artistic development."
Factfile: Azerbaijan
* Where: Azerbaijan shares its borders with Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south.
* History: The country gets its name from Atropates, a Persian nobleman. In modern Persian translates to "The Treasury" and "The Treasurer" of fire or "The Land of the Fire".
* Area: 86,600 sq. km.
* Population: 9,168 millions.
* Official Language: Azerbaijani
* Economy: Oil and natural gas. Azerbaijan is one of the birthplaces of the oil industry and produces about 800,000 barrels a day and one billion cubic meters of gas per year.
* Currency :Azerbaijani Manat. It is divided into 100 qepik.
* Major Religion: Islam
* Drink: Tea is the most popular drink. It is traditionally served in a pear shaped glass and often consumed through lumps of sugar or jam, held in the mouth.
* Rivers: There are 8,350 rivers in Azerbaijan and all of them drain into the Caspian Sea.
* Capital: Baku. It is located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula. Its name in Persian means "Wind-pounded city". The city is the scientific, cultural and industrial centre of the country with an estimated population of 2,064 millions.
The old city overlooks the Caspian Sea. All is not well in these waters. The sturgeon fish and country's world famous wild caviar are under threat. On the Kura River which flows into the Caspian Sea is one example of how Azerbaijan is preparing to protect its industry of caviar and take it into tomorrow's world with a special and unique ecological farm for sturgeon.
It is one of the oldest families of fish in existence, its caviar eggs renowned and sought after for centuries at tables across the world, but the clock is ticking.
"Sturgeon fish is on the verge of extinction. No more wild caviar if we don't do something about it now," said Ahadpur K the man behind the initiative.
Under strict ecological conditions there is a breeding programme in place. Each stage of development of every fish is closely monitored. After five years they are released into the fresh water.
"Caviar fish is like salmon, for example, from whichever river they entered the water when they have caviar they return to the same river to lay eggs," added Ahadpur K.

Welcome to Tokyo, the capital of Japan and the epitome of the word “megacity.”
In this vast metropolis, ancient traditions blend with futuristic buildings, and your Tokyo sightseeing will take you to representations of each. Pay your respects at temples set in forested hillsides, then flex your credit card in one of the shopping districts, before sitting down to a five-star meal…all in one day.
Your Tokyo tour begins with the subway and train system, which will take you all over this sprawling city. Tokyo is home to some 35 million people, many of which you’ll meet as its public transit carries you throughout its many neighborhoods. Make a stop in Asakusa, a temple district nestled in leafy trees with skyscrapers towering in the background. There you’ll visit Nakamisi Dori, a street loaded with food vendors and religious charms. Get to know the city a little better in the Harajuku district, home to cutting-edge fashion, a thriving, youth-centered culture, and the famous Yoyogi Park. The park stands out in stern contrast to the rest of the neighborhood; this sprawling, 134-acre green space is where locals slow down after a frenzied week of work and play.
As night falls, make your way to Shinjuku. Many of Tokyo’s premier restaurants and pubs span Shinjuku’s streets, and you can indulge in succulent 5-star meals or sample with fast food from local vendors. Watch a movie, do some karaoke, and linger with fellow travelers and friendly locals alike.

This summer, I got the chance to fly to Azerbaijan and get to know the country, being sponsored by socar and e.on. I honestly had the best time of my life with a lot of great openminded people. The most beautiful country I've ever seen, definitely want to go back someday.
Sadly a lot of footage got deleted by my brother, so you don't get to see everything... Still a lot of the many beautiful places got included into the video, and I'm really proud of the result.

Gastronomic tour in Azerbaijan 6 days/5 nights
Baku – Ismaili – Qabala – Sheki – Baku
The art of wine-testing is as ancient, as the wine-making itself. This incredible adventure is the very sacred moment, in which a person becomes acquainted with wine, learns all secrets of its storing, recognizes kinds of wine, identify all shades of color and smell, to deservedly appreciate its taste.
Degustation – is not just technological process: it is art, science and mystery. But it’s not correct to think, that secrets of wine-testing are accessible only to devoted ones. Any person can learn, how to correctly taste wine, but if one wants to understand, how it works, not only needs to learn rules – it is necessary to feel the might of wine, imagine it, make work correctly all of your sense organs and of course, possess some knowledge with some time.
