Realtree Global Hunting: Team Wild's Ian Harford is on the hunt for problem peccary in Texas this week. The javelina have been causing problems and running amok on a local ranch, so Mr H is called in to sort the problem. The javelina need careful managing to protect the trophy whitetail in these parts and as your only allowed to shoot 2 per person each year, they need all the help they can get.

Like most Amazonian tribes, tasks are divided between the sexes. Men hunt for game like peccary, tapir, deer and monkey, and often use curare (a plant extract) to poison their prey.
Although hunting accounts for only 10% of Yanomami food, amongst men it is considered the most prestigious of skills and meat is greatly valued by everyone.
No hunter ever eats the meat that he has killed. Instead he shares it out among friends and family. In return, he will be given meat by another hunter.

This is a video of a White-Lipped Peccary snapping her (canine) teeth. Peccaries do this as a warning to possible attackers or predators. She has injured her nose superficially by trying to break out of the trap. Peccaries are a favorite food of the jaguar, as well as the mountain lion. This peccary was trapped for research purposes, and outfitted with a radio-collar, then released shortly after this video was shot. This peccary lives in the semi-deciduous forest of the Cerrado in Brazil, not far from Campo Grande, Brazil.

The Collared Peccary is also called the "Javilina" pronounced (Have-ah-Leena). They are an amazing animal that currently lives in parts of South and Central America and in the United States are found only in the Southwest. These were filmed deep in the Arizona back country at a remote camp. Its not a pig, although its snout and hooves are unmistakeably similar. A peccary is a medium-sized animal, with a strong resemblance to pigs. Like pigs, it has a snout ending in a cartilagenous disc, and eyes that are small relative to its head. Also like pigs, it uses only the middle two digits for walking, although, unlike pigs, the other toes may be altogether absent. Its stomach is nonruminating, although it has three chambers, and is more complex than that of pigs.[6]
Peccaries are omnivores, and will eat small animals, although their preferred food consists of roots, grass, seeds, fruit,[6] and cacti—particularly prickly pear cacti.[7] Pigs and peccaries can be differentiated by the shape of the canine tooth, or tusk. In European pigs, the tusk is long and curves around on itself, whereas in peccaries, the tusk is short and straight. The jaws and tusks of peccaries are adapted for crushing hard seeds and slicing into plant roots,[6] and they also use their tusks for defending against predators. The dental formula for peccaries is:
By rubbing the tusks together, they can make a chattering noise that warns potential predators not to get too close. Peccaries are aggressive enough in temperament that, unlike Eurasian pigs, they cannot be domesticated, as they are likely to injure humans. In recent years in northwestern Bolivia near Madidi National Park, large groups of peccaries have been reported to seriously injure or kill people.[8]
Peccaries are social animals, and often form herds. Over 100 individuals have been recorded for a single herd of white-lipped peccaries, but collared and Chacoan peccaries usually form smaller groups. Such social behavior seems to have been the situation in extinct peccaries, as well. The recently discovered giant peccary (Pecari maximus) appears to be less social, primarily living in pairs.[9]
Peccaries have scent glands below each eye and another on their back, though these are believed to be rudimentary in P. maximus. They use the scent to mark herd territories, which range from 75 to 700 acres (2.8 km2). They also mark other herd members with these scent glands by rubbing one against another. The pungent odor allows peccaries to recognize other members of the herd, despite their myopic vision. The odor is strong enough to be picked up by humans, which earns the peccary the nickname of skunk pig.

A peccary (plural peccaries; also javelina and skunk pig; Portuguese javali and Spanish jabalí, sajino or pecarí) is a medium-sized mammal of the family Tayassuidae, or New World pigs. Peccaries are members of the artiodactyl suborder Suina, as are the pig family (Suidae) and possibly the hippopotamus family (Hippopotamidae). They are found in the southwestern area of North America and throughout Central and South America. Peccaries usually measure between 90 and 130 centimetres (3.0 and 4.3 ft) in length, and a full-grown adult usually weighs between about 20 to 40 kilograms (44 to 88 lb). The word “peccary” is derived from the Carib word pakira or paquira.
People often confuse peccaries, which are found in the Americas, with the pig family that originated in Afro-Eurasia, especially since some domestic pigs brought by European settlers have escaped over the years and now run wild as "razorback" hogs in many parts of the United States.
In many countries they are raised on farms and are a source of food for local communities, especially in the developing world. Their skin, being both rigid and strong, as well as soft and supple, is recognized as being ideal for the production of leather gloves.

Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American composer, singer-songwriter, electric guitarist, recording engineer, record producer and film director. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa wrote rock, jazz, orchestral and musique concrète works. He also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. Zappa produced almost all of the more than 60 albums he released with the band The Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist. While in his teens, he acquired a taste for percussion-based avant-garde composers such as Edgard Varèse and 1950s rhythm and blues music. He began writing classical music in high school, while at the same time playing drums in rhythm and blues bands; he later switched to electric guitar.
He was a self-taught composer and performer, and his diverse musical influences led him to create music that was often impossible to categorize. His 1966 debut album with The Mothers of Invention, Freak Out!, combined songs in conventional rock and roll format with collective improvisations and studio-generated sound collages. His later albums shared this eclectic and experimental approach, irrespective of whether the fundamental format was one of rock, jazz or classical. Three Chacoan peccary piglets were born at the San Diego Zoo on June 19, adding to the current population of nine Chacoan peccaries currently at the Zoo. These youngsters can often be seen using their large circular snout to dig and root around their exhibit. Keepers say the babies have been staying close to each other and often play by running and jumping around together, a behavior known as frisky hopping. While walking silently in the rain forest, hours sometimes go by without spotting a single animal other than monkeys. To see the endangered Baird's Tapir in the rain forest is rare enough, but to see it and a small family of 3 collared peccaries in one frame is really cool. Collared Peccary, by the way, is a type of boar native to the Americas (North America, Central and South) Feb 2012 Corcovado National Park and specifically Sirena biological research Station is the best place in the world to see this species. Throughout a 2.5 days stay we saw at least 7 or 8 individuals throughout the park, in over 10 encounters, even right near the research station where visitors reading a book or relaxing on a hammock enjoyed watching it. Not that reading a book or relaxing on a hammock is my choice activity in Corcovado National Park (why would you come this far to one of the most remote and biodiverse regions in the world to read a book?) but to each his own. Regardless, this is a nice representation of some of the exotic wildlife encounters you can expect on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica

The javelina have been causing problems and running amok on a local ranch, so Mr H is called in to sort the problem. The javelina need careful managing to protect the trophy whitetail in these parts and as your only allowed to shoot 2 per person each year, they need all the help they can get. -

She has injured her nose superficially by trying to break out of the trap. Peccaries are a favorite food of the jaguar, as well as the mountain lion. This peccary was trapped for research purposes, and outfitted with a radio-collar, then released shortly after this video was shot. This peccary lives in the semi-deciduous forest of the Cerrado in Brazil, not far from Campo Grande, Brazil. -

Three Chacoan peccary piglets were born at the San Diego Zoo on June 19, adding to the current population of nine Chacoan peccaries currently at the Zoo. Baird's Tapir meets Collared Peccary in Costa Rica
While walking silently in the rain forest, hours sometimes go by without spotting a single animal other than monkeys. To see the endangered Baird's Tapir in the rain forest is rare enough, but to see it and a small family of 3 collared peccaries in one frame is really cool. Collared Peccary, by the way, is a type of boar native to the Americas (North America, Central and South) Feb 2012 Corcovado National Park and specifically Sirena biological research Station is the best place in the world to see this species. Throughout a 2.5 days stay we saw at least 7 or 8 individuals throughout the park, in over 10 encounters, even right near the research station where visitors reading a book or relaxing on a hammock enjoyed watching it. Not that reading a book or relaxing on a hammock is my choice... -

Here at the Los Angeles Zoo, we care about the Chacoan peccary. The LA Zoo has been involved in the care and conservation of the Chacoan Peccary since 2001 when we first became home to 3 of these animals, and stepped to the forefront in working to build a thriving herd. We are now one of the top contributors to the population in the country. Our efforts are not limited to this continent, however. Curator of Mammals Jeff Holland contributes his expertise for several weeks a year in person, assisting in field research at the Chaco Center for Conservation and Research in Paraguay. Also like pigs, it uses only the middle two digits for walking, although, unlike pigs, the other toes may be altogether absent. Its stomach is nonruminating, although it has three chambers, and is more complex than that of pigs.[6]
Peccaries are omnivores, and will eat small animals, although their preferred food consists of roots, grass, seeds, fruit,[6] and cacti—particularly prickly pear cacti.[7] Pigs and peccaries can be differentiated by the shape of the canine tooth, or tusk. In European pigs, the tusk is long and curves around on itself, whereas in peccaries, the tusk is short and straight. The jaws and tusks of peccaries are adapted for crushing hard seeds and slicing into plant roots,[6] and they also use their tusks for defending against predators. The dental formula for peccaries is:
By rubbing the tusks together, they can make a chattering noise that warns potential predators not to get too close. Peccaries are aggressive enough in temperament that, unlike Eurasian pigs, they cannot be domesticated, as they are likely to injure humans. In recent years in northwestern Bolivia near Madidi National Park, large groups of peccaries have been reported to seriously injure or kill people.[8]
Peccaries are social animals, and often form herds. Over 100 individuals have been recorded for a single herd of white-lipped peccaries, but collared and Chacoan peccaries usually form smaller groups. While walking silently in the rain forest, hours sometimes go by without spotting a single animal other than monkeys. To see the endangered Baird's Tapir in the rain forest is rare enough, but to see it and a small family of 3 collared peccaries in one frame is really cool. Collared Peccary, by the way, is a type of boar native to the Americas (North America, Central and South)

Corcovado National Park and specifically Sirena biological research Station is the best place in the world to see this species. Throughout a 2.5 days stay we saw at least 7 or 8 individuals throughout the park, in over 10 encounters, even right near the research station where visitors reading a book or relaxing on a hammock enjoyed watching it. Not that reading a book or relaxing on a hammock is my choice activity in Corcovado National Park (why would you come this far to one of the most remote and biodiverse regions in the world to read a book?) but to each his own.
Regardless, this is a nice representation of some of the exotic wildlife encounters you can expect on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica

Here at the Los Angeles Zoo, we care about the Chacoan peccary. The LA Zoo has been involved in the care and conservation of the Chacoan Peccary since 2001 when we first became home to 3 of these animals, and stepped to the forefront in working to build a thriving herd. We are now one of the top contributors to the population in the country. Our efforts are not limited to this continent, however. Curator of Mammals Jeff Holland contributes his expertise for several weeks a year in person, assisting in field research at the Chaco Center for Conservation and Research in Paraguay. It is from here that there is hope that one day it will be possible to integrate portions of the captive population it houses back into the wild.
Won’t you join us in our ongoing mission to save not only the Chacoan peccary, but all endangered species by making a gift by June 30th? Funds raised in this campaign go to support our zoo and its conservation programs, including the Chacoan Peccary Species Survival Plan and the CCCR in Paraguay. Nearly 40% of the species at the Los Angeles Zoo are threatened or endangered, and we are working tirelessly to assure a future for all these extraordinary creatures.
