Loa años 50 comienzan para Bacall con El trompetista (1950), junto a su amigo Kirk Douglas al que había convencido para dejar Nueva York y probar suerte en el cine en California. La actriz, que tuvo tres hijos, se casó en segundas nupcias con el también actor Jason Robards en 1961, aunque se divorció en 1969. Su hijo Sam Robards continúo la profesión de sus padres y es un habitual en series de televisión estadounidenses. Bacall worked on Broadway in musicals, earning Tony Awards for Applause in 1970 and Woman of the Year in 1981.
