The beauty and wonder of Hawaii's aquatic world come to life in this three-acre facility, conveniently located at Ma'alaea Harbor. The exhibits at Maui Ocean Center present living animals in habitats that faithfully replicate their natural environment beneath the sea. An average visit to the Hawaiian Aquarium lasts approximately one and a half to two hours, but most visitors stay longer to absorb the breathtaking views, linger over lunch at the Aquarium's Seascape Ma`alaea Restaurant or to immerse themselves in Maui Ocean Treasures gift shop, a veritable treasure trove of unique Maui Made products and island-inspired jewelry, art, clothing, toys, gifts, books and logo items. www.mauioceancenter.com
Maui Ocean Center’s complimentary Sea Talk Series continues on with a presentation on large marine mammal entanglement response by Ed Lyman, Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary’s Large Whale Entanglement Response Coordinator.
Hawaiian Cultural Advisor Kahu Dane Maxwell presided over a blessing and chant for the newest additions to Maui Ocean Center's Hawaiian green sea turtle family. The Turtle Lagoon exhibit was also blessed to provide the hatchlings with a safe environment to reside in for the next two years. The hatchlings will be hosted by Maui Ocean Center for the next two years to serve as ambassadors of their species. Hawaiian green sea turtles are classified as a Threatened Species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. At two years of age, the turtles will be released to continue life in the open ocean. The presence of sea turtles and their integration into the Aquarium’s education programs aims to teach guests about Hawaiian green sea turtles, the challenges they face, and what people can do to p...
