Ballater (Scottish Gaelic: Bealadair) is a burgh in Aberdeenshire, Scotland on the River Dee, immediately east of the Cairngorm Mountains. Situated at an elevation of 213 m (700 ft), Ballater is a centre for hikers and known for its spring water, once said to cure scrofula. It is home to more than 1500 inhabitants.
The medieval pattern of development along this reach of the River Dee was influenced by the ancient trackways across the Grampian Mounth, which determined strategic locations of castles and other Deeside settlements of the Middle Ages.
In the early 14th century, the area was part of the estates of the Knights of St John, but the settlement did not develop until around 1770; first as a spa resort to accommodate visitors to the Pananich Mineral Well, then later upon the arrival of the railway in 1866 it was visited by many tourists taking advantage of the easier access thus afforded.
Ballater railway station was closed in 1966 but remains in use as a visitor centre with an exhibition recording the village's royal connection. Many buildings date from the Victorian era and the centre of the village is a conservation area. The old railway station/ visitor centre was substantially damaged by fire in May 2015 and is now closed.

The 2015–16 season was the first instance of the United Kingdom's Met Office and Ireland's Met Éireann naming extratropical cyclones. The season started on 10 November with the naming of Storm Abigail and is ongoing. Storms are named when they are forecast to cause hazards due to high winds by either organisation. The season is most notable for the amount of rainfall which fell over the UK and Ireland, causing the 2015–16 Great Britain and Ireland floods; most of which is attributed to Storms Desmond, Eva and Frank. The strongest low-level gust of the season so far came from Gertrude on 29 January with 105 mph (169 km/h) at Lerwick, Shetland Islands.
Earlier in 2015, the Met Office and Met Éireann announced a pilot project to name wind storms and asked the public for suggestions. The full list of names for 2015, common to both the UK and Ireland, chosen for future selection are:
A storm will be named when it is deemed able to have a "substantial" impact on the UK or Ireland. They will be taken from the list, in alphabetical order, alternating between male and female names – the same naming convention used by the United States for tropical cyclones. In the case of storms resulting from ex-tropical storms and hurricanes, the original name allocated by the US National Hurricane Center will be used. Met Éireann name any storm which triggers a status orange or red weather warning for wind. The basis for such as outlined on their weather warning service are mean wind speeds in excess of 40 mph (65 km/h) or gusts over 68 mph (110 km/h). Similarly, the Met Office name storms that have the potential to cause medium (orange) or high (red) impacts to the UK. It describes the wind strength relative to observations such as "falling trees or tiles and other items like garden furniture being blown around."

We started our week off looking for things to do in and around Ballater, it had just snowed so made sense to get out the sledges and look for somewhere awesome. We arrived at Glen Muick to a foot of snow. The following days we walk up Craigendarroch which overlooks Ballater, it took about 2 hours to walk the circuit. The following days we went skiing at the Lecht and also Glenshee. It is one of my favorite drives from Ballater to Braemar. Our final day we visited Muir of Dinnet which is managed by the Scottish Natural Heritage. Muir of Dinnet blends woodland, heath, open water and an impressive example of nature's sculptural work, all on one site. Visit the Burn O'Vat and feel the rock walls swallow you up in their damp embrace, cutting you off from the outside world. http://www....
Surrounded by the glorious countryside Ballater is a picturesque Victorian village in the heart of Royal Deeside located in the Cairngorm National Park. Lying eight miles along the River Dee to the west, its rich history and royal connections are world famous. Ballater is the nearest town to Balmoral Castle, one of the residences of the Royal Family, which explains the many ‘By Royal Appointment’ signs can be seen on local shops and business. Close by is also Royal Lochnagar Distillery which produces one of Scotland’s most exclusive whiskies. A visit to the distillery is a timeless experience.
Young boys up to 12 yrs old are led through the town by Ballater & District Pipe Band to their Christmas party at the Golf Club, supported by the organisers and marshals from Ballater Charitable Chiels. The Ballater little masons march was founded in 1844, originally started as benevolence to local children who would not otherwise have had a Christmas party, by Lodge St Nathalan 259.
Ballater's Royal Bridge, damaged by Storm Frank's floods, is given a helping hand by the British Army.

Take this scenic car journey from Pitlochry to Braemar, right at the start of the Cairngorms. Braemar, or Bràigh Mhàrr in Gaelic, is a small town situated in the Scottish Highlands, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is a lovely, tranquil place and is surrounded by the Cairngorms. At an altitude of 339 metres (1,110 ft), it isn't the highest town in Scotland, but must be one of the more populated. You drive through some of the most beautiful scenery Scotland has to offer on the A93 road and is a delightful journey in the summer, when the days are long and there isn't any snow. Being in the Highlands, it is prone to the elements and when bad weather sets in, you soon know about it. We also pass the Glenshee Ski Centre, which is the largest ski resort in Scotland and must get heavily...

Scotland road trip 2015 | Day eight: From Inverness to Ballater - Stay tuned: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw-V... - Hi! I'm Cécile, a French student of 19 years old. This summer, I went to Scotland with my family and we did a road trip. I decided to film a little bit everyday because I thought it was going to be amazing, and I wasn't wrong. After the trip, I wanted to edit the videos, and I realized I loved to do this. The videos turned pretty good, so I decided to upload these on Youtube to share this wonderful trip with others. It helped me to watch videos to plan my road trip, so I hope my little videos are going to help some of you to see the best of Scotland. If you have any questions about the monuments, cities, hotels, restaurants, or if you want to know which camera I used...
Braemar Gathering 2016 march by Royal Highland Society members, led by Ballater & District Pipe Band, marching from Invercauld Hotel through Braemar to the Games Field.
Deep in the forest, the solid woods do tremble
The earth shakes by the sound of his chant
A vision of grandeur, a sight of strength and justice
Haunting the dead, warning the living
Pain is an illusion of the senses
Despair is an illusion of the weak mind
Now you're a warrior, raise the flag - united !
Never turn your back for cowardice equals crime
Now life is a prison, a cage that weighs upon him
There lies his duty, a work without redemption
"Now set them free, your sword's the key you're holding
Then you yourself shall once be released?"
Every single man is
a spark in the darkness
By Time he is noticed
and then gone forever
Enough of this talking
As I storm towards you
