The bear is an animal with the older symbolism within the European continent. Primitive man admired the ability Bear "resurrect" after the winter, and, of course, to his strength and ferocity. The bear is a creature of contrasts: it has enormous strength and still loves fruits and honey. Bear in Jungian Psychology is the danger caused by the contents of the unconscious and uncontrollable because it is often associated as an attribute of cruel and rude man. The energy is the energy of the bear who seeks your deepest truth, and with the discovery of this truth are graced with the honey of life - the sweetness that comes with knowing who we really are.
The Ursa Major is a constellation visible throughout the year in the northern hemisphere, is associated with the Greek myth of Callisto. Zeus fell in love with a mortal hunter named Callisto. Hera, wife of Zeus, turned to jealousy in a big bear. Without realizing that it was his mother, Arcas (the son of Callisto) was about to kill his mother. Zeus, to avoid the impending tragedy, little changed Arcas into a bear and threw them into the sky where they would be safe and immortal.

In Scotland, an "armigerous clan" is a clan without a chief, which is therefore said to bear a coat of arms collectively, rather than having a chief who bears the arms. The validity of this term is dubious, since under Scottish heraldic law, it is impossible for two men to use the same coat of arms, let alone an entire clan of people.
In a clan with a chief, only the chief bears the undifferenced arms; his kinsmen must add some kind of differencing mark so they can be distinguished. For example, in a clan where the chief bore the arms azure, a fess or, a clansman could add symbols above and below the fess. According to those who subscribe to the concept of "armigerous clans", if the chief were to die without an heir, everyone in the clan would then bear azure, a fess or. This would effectively destroy the purpose of heraldry, since it would be impossible to identify someone in a battle or tournament when there were hundreds of distantly related people using identical arms.

BALVAIRD CASTLE
A residence for newly-weds
Balvaird offers a fine illustration of the way in which a 16th-century landowner’s fortified house could provide a good degree of security for its occupants while at the same time affording them a high level of comfort. We do not know who built the impressive four-storey tower house. However, heraldry above the tower’s front entrance bears the impaled arms of Sir Andrew Murray and Dame Margaret Barclay, heiress of the baronies of Arngask and Kippo, which included Balvaird. Perhaps they built it as their marital home following their wedding, around 1495.
A complete tower-house castle
Balvaird is unusual among Scottish tower houses in that it retains all the elements that comprised a residence of the landed gentry in the late Middle Ages. Many tower houses now stand alone, but at Balvaird the visitor can see the tower house in its full context. It is surrounded by outer and inner courtyards, each with its requisite service buildings (now represented mostly by wall footings only), a formal walled garden (today without its planting), and a large walled ‘pleasance’, or park, where the family could indulge in leisure pursuits such as archery and hawking.
A sophisticated tower house
The L-planned tower house is a sophisticated structure, with features setting it apart from many of its contemporaries. The stair tower, for example, is adroitly positioned in the angle between the main rectangular block and the wing to its south, so that the spiral stair didn’t take up valuable room within the house itself. Then there is the internal planning, where the wing is used to provide each floor with an additional room. Also of interest is the clever positioning of the privies, all at the W junction of the main block and wing so that they can feed into one single waste chute. This was ingeniously flushed out by rainwater collected in a tank (now gone) placed on the battlements. Add to these the fine fireplace and elaborate aumbry (wall cupboard) in the first-floor hall, and we have in Balvaird a tower house that was in advance of its time.
On to better things
The Murrays of Balvaird were the forebears of the family that eventually acquired the titles of Lord Balvaird, Viscount Stormont and Earl of Mansfield. As they began to climb the aristocratic ladder, they extended and remodelled the house of Sir Andrew and Dame Margaret. Then, once the 2nd Lord Balvaird succeeded as 4th Viscount Stormont in 1658, they preferred the gentler setting of Scone, north of Perth, for their principal residence. Gradually, Balvaird declined in importance. It latterly ended up as a home for landless farm labourers rather than landed gentry.

Bear in heraldry
The bear is a common charge in heraldry, perhaps inherited from its totemic use among Germanic peoples and by some interpreted as symbolizing strength, cunning and ferocity in the protection of one's kindred. Numerous cities around the world have adopted the bear in their arms, notably the Swiss capital Bern, which takes its name from the German for bear, Bär. The bear is similarly the name-emblem of Berlin, through false etymology (Bärlein means 'small bear'), although in fact the city's name descends from a Slavic word for swamps.
In Switzerland, the heraldic bears in a coat of arms had to be painted with bright red penises, or would be mocked as being she-bears. In 1579, a calendar printed in St. Gallen omitted the genitals from the heraldic bear of Appenzell, nearly leading to war between the two cantons.
The saddled bear of Saint Corbinian's legend is the heraldic symbol of Freising, Bavaria, and the Diocese of Munich and Freising. Pope Benedict XVI, former archbishop of Munich, also applied it in his Papal Arms.

Hera, wife of Zeus, turned to jealousy in a big bear. Without realizing that it was his mother, Arcas (the son of Callisto) was about to kill his mother. Zeus, to avoid the impending tragedy, little changed Arcas into a bear and threw them into the sky where they would be safe and immortal.

In Scotland, an "armigerous clan" is a clan without a chief, which is therefore said to bear a coat of arms collectively, rather than having a chief who bears the arms. Balvaird offers a fine illustration of the way in which a 16th-century landowner’s fortified house could provide a good degree of security for its occupants while at the same time affording them a high level of comfort. We do not know who built the impressive four-storey tower house. However, heraldry above the tower’s front entrance bears the impaled arms of Sir Andrew Murray and Dame Margaret Barclay, heiress of the baronies of Arngask and Kippo, which included Balvaird. Perhaps they built it as their marital home following their wedding, around 1495.
A complete tower-house castle
Balvaird is unusual among Scottish tower houses in that it retains all the elements that comprised a residence of the landed gentry in the late Middle Ages. Many tower houses now stand alone, but at Balvaird the visitor can see the tower house in its full context. It is surrounded by outer and inner courtyards, each with its requisite service buildings (now represented mostly by wall footings only), a formal walled garden (today without its planting), and a large walled ‘pleasance’, or park, where the family could indulge in leisure pursuits such as archery and hawking.
A sophisticated tower house
The L-planned tower house is a sophisticated structure, with features setting it apart from many of its contemporaries. The stair tower, for example, is adroitly positioned in the angle between the main rectangular block and the wing to its south, so that the spiral stair didn’t take up valuable room within the house itself. Then there is the internal planning, where the wing is used to provide each floor with an additional room. Also of interest is the clever positioning of the privies, all at the W junction of the main block and wing so that they can feed into one single waste chute. This was ingeniously flushed out by rainwater collected in a tank (now gone) placed on the battlements. Add to these the fine fireplace and elaborate aumbry (wall cupboard) in the first-floor hall, and we have in Balvaird a tower house that was in advance of its time.
On to better things
The Murrays of Balvaird were the forebears of the family that eventually acquired the titles of Lord Balvaird, Viscount Stormont and Earl of Mansfield. As they began to climb the aristocratic ladder, they extended and remodelled the house of Sir Andrew and Dame Margaret. Then, once the 2nd Lord Balvaird succeeded as 4th Viscount Stormont in 1658, they preferred the gentler setting of Scone, north of Perth, for their principal residence. Gradually, Balvaird declined in importance. It latterly ended up as a home for landless farm labourers rather than landed gentry.
