Dramatised and actuality suffragette footage. Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst visits the Boss and demands recognition of the rights for equal suffrage. We see an office with an eminent gentleman seated reading a sheet of paper - a heavy leather seated chair is in the foreground and a portrait of a bewigged man (possibly George Washington?) is seen on the wall; the door opens and we see his female secretary enter dressed in a white blouse, bow tie and a long skirt of the period, her hair is in a bun; she crosses to him and tells him something - he does not look up but she hands him a calling card which he reads as he smokes a cigar - he nods and stnads as the secretary crosses to the door, opens it and (recognised personality), Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst enters; they bow politely to one another - Mrs Pankhurst is wearing a velvet choker, a long coat, white blouse, white gloves and a tall hat decorated with a plume; the gentleman indicates the leather seat and Mrs Pankhurst moves to sit in it as the secretary departs - we see Mrs Pankhurst is carrying a small handbag on a long chain - she sits and the man pulls up his chair alongside her - she immediately begins to speak in a determined way; the man seems indignant - we see him gesticulate with his hands - crossing them in front of himself as if to say 'absolutely not'; he then stands indicating the audience is terminated and Mrs Pankhurst also then gets up and starts to put forward her views in a very adamant way while he stands, hands akimbo in a defiant manner - she gesticulates to enforce her speech and gets quite animated/angry before syaing goodbye and turning to leave - as she leaves he bows to her - she turns to say goodbye and exits. 02:42:13 A crowd scene is a street where we see the heads of dozens of men, most wearing flat caps - a few children are in the foreground and one or two women are present; they are congregating in front of a shop which bears the sign "Brandy Merchants" - some posters are seen on the walls of the building. Then, another section of the same corwd is seen with more evidence of children and a woman - some are smiling at the photographer as they mill around - we see one small boy in a sailor suit mid way through the throng being carried aloft - another boy aged about eleven is wearing a scholar's mortar board - there is much joviality and curiosity regarding the film-maker from the crowd. We then see Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst standing next to the lion statues in Trafalgar Square, London - we see a melee of men and women, the visible men are wearing military hats, all are standing behing her listening- she is dressed in a fur collared coat and wears a feathered hat - Mrs Pankhurst is making a speech and gesticulates accordingly. We then see a procession being led by a marching brass band, the band is dressed in military type uniforms and they are all playing brass instruments - some policemen are standing to one side and behind the band we see marching women in white blouses carrying a banner saying "Follow to the Portman Rooms";(which are in Covent Garden, London), the procession marches past and we see one bandsman carrying a large drum - the women are smiling and other banners carried by them follow behind: banners read "We deman Votes for women to protect our homes and wages", another says "East London Federation", we then see some men are marching alongside the procession and banners say "No compulsion without safeguards", another carries information regarding "women's wages: 10 shillings 10 pence and men's wages 25shillings 9 pence" the next banner says "Fight for your children if you will not fight for yourselves", then "We demand equal pay for equal work", this banner is carried by men - another banner compares two levels of pay "Men 32 shillings, women 12 shillings" - yet another banner says "Thick and Thin, we begin.." we see women marching together, one has a child with a mop cap with her, another man has two young sons with him. We see another shot as the band and a banner "London Federation of the Suffragettes - Long Live Sylvia"( which refers to Sylvia Pankhurst,) policemen much in evidence march alongside - we see also a portion of the busy London street with an old car and a double decked omnibus driving past - also crowds on the pavement doing their shopping.
