Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R

The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R or ZX 1000 E is a Kawasaki sport bike, the successor to the ZX-9R. It was originally released in 2004 with minor revisions in 2005. It combines an ultra-narrow chassis, low weight, and radial brakes. In 2004 and 2005 the ZX-10R won Best Superbike from Cycle World magazine, and the international Masterbike competition.

According to data published in 2007 by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety in the USA, the ZX-10R has the country's highest collision damage loss claim rate of any motorcycle registered between 2000 and 2006.

Components

Engine

Kawasaki engineers used a stacked design for a liquid-cooled, 998 cc (60.9 cu in) inline four-cylinder engine. The crankshaft axis, input shaft and output shaft of the Ninja ZX-10R engine are positioned in a triangular layout to reduce engine length, while the high-speed generator is placed behind the cylinder bank to reduce engine width. With a bore and stroke of 76 mm × 55 mm (3.0 in × 2.2 in), the ZX-10R engine's one-piece cylinder and crankcase assembly reduces weight and increases rigidity. The DOHC are machined from chromoly steel built for strength, four valves per cylinder improve high-rpm breathing, and the forged, lightweight pistons offer high heat resistance to further enhance the bike's power-to-weight ratio.

Superbike World Championship

Superbike World Championship (also known as SBK, World Superbike, WSB, or WSBK) is the worldwide Superbike racing Championship. The championship was founded in 1988. The Superbike World Championship season consists of a series of rounds held on permanent racing facilities. Each round has two races and the results of each race are combined to determine two annual World Championships, one for riders and one for manufacturers.

The motorcycles that race in the championship are tuned versions of motorcycles available for sale to the public, by contrast with MotoGP where purpose built machines are used. MotoGP is the motorcycle world's equivalent of Formula One, whereas Superbike racing is similar to touring car racing.

Europe is Superbike World Championship's traditional centre and leading market. However, rounds have been held in the United States, Malaysia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Australia, Russia, Qatar, and South Africa and the series plans on keeping extra-European circuits in rotation. An Indonesian race was also proposed for the 2008 season, but this was later canceled by the FIM.

BMW S1000RR

The BMW S1000RR is a sport bike initially made by BMW Motorrad to compete in the 2009 Superbike World Championship, that is now in commercial production. It was introduced in Munich in April 2008, and is powered by a 999 cc (61.0 cu in) inline-4 engine redlined at 14,200 rpm.

BMW made 1,000 S1000RRs in 2009 to satisfy World Superbike homologation requirements, but expanded production for commercial sale of the bike in 2010. It has an anti-lock braking system, standard, with an optional electronic traction control. It has a wet weight of 207.7 kg (458 lb), and produces 133.6 kW (179.2 hp) @ 13,250 rpm at the rear wheel.

Race bike differences

The factory race bike used in the Superbike World Championship differs in a number of ways from the production bike. Its engine has a higher compression ratio of 14.0:1 compared with 13.0:1, and it delivers over 200 hp (150 kW) at 14,000 rpm, compared with 193 hp (144 kW) at 13,000 rpm. The race bike has a 44 mm Öhlins forks, compared with a 46 mm ZF Sachs forks. Until 2012 it had a 16.5-inch front wheel and a 16-inch rear wheel instead of a 17-inch (for 2013 world superbike season, 17-inch rims became mandatory) and an MRA Racing 'Double-Bubble' Windshield. Most significantly, it has a wet weight of 162 kg (357 lb) compared with 207.7 kg (458 lb) for the production model.

Yamaha YZF-R1

The Yamaha YZF-R1, or R1, is an open class sport bike, or superbike,motorcycle manufactured by Yamaha Motor Company since 1998.

History 1998–1999

Yamaha launched the YZF-R1 after redesigning the Genesis engine to create a more compact engine by raising the gearbox input shaft and allowing the gearbox output shaft to be placed beneath it. This design feature was revolutionary, called a 'stacked gearbox', it has set a precedent for other manufacturers to follow. This "compacting" of the engine made the total engine length much shorter overall, thereby, allowing the wheelbase of the motorcycle to be shortened significantly. This, in turn, allowed the frame design to place the weight of the engine in the frame to aid handling because of an optimized center of gravity. The swingarm was able to be made longer without compromising the overall wheelbase, which was a short 1385mm. These features, combined with a steep fork angle, exceptional brakes and racing streamlining, created a bike that was unbeatable on the race track at the time. Four Kehin CV carburetors of 40mm diameter fed fuel to the engine, 140 bhp was claimed by the factory, at the countershaft. USD 41mm front forks supplied by KYB mounted 300mm semi-floating disk brakes. The instrument panel was revolutionary, having an electrical problem, self diagnosis system inbuilt, and digital speed readout. The exhaust system utilised an EXUP valve, which controlled the exhaust gas flow, to maximise engine power production at all revs, creating a high powered but also torquey engine. The twin headlights were powerful, allowing high speed travelling at night. The bike had a compression ratio of 11.8:1 with a six-speed transmission and multi-plate clutch.
