Alexandre rend hommage au poète et historien québécois Benjamin Sulte (1841-1923) et à son poème, «Bytown».
Le titre de ce poème fait référence à l’ancien nom de la ville d’Ottawa, fondée en 1826 par le lieutenant-colonel britannique John By (1779-1836). By supervisait alors la construction du canal Rideau, et a dû établir un campement sur le site destiné à héberger les travailleurs. Le village ainsi créé fut nommé Bytown. Une fois terminée la construction du canal, en 1832, les villageois furent amenés à travailler dans l’industrie du bois. Il faut comprendre qu’à l’origine, le territoire d’Ottawa était une riche et épaisse forêt constituée d’une variété d’arbres. Y voyant là une ressource économique considérable (et les droits de coupe étant inexistants à l’époque), l’Angleterre a alors entrepris une exploitation majeure de ces forêts. Des canadiens-français et des immigrants irlandais (surnommés «Shiners») furent embauchés comme bûcherons et draveurs, dans un environnement complètement chaotique et dangereux. À Bytown régnait alors les conflits linguistiques, la violence, l’alcool, la saleté et la misère, le tout au profit de l’économie britannique. C’est cette région et ce contexte misérable de développement économique qui aura inspiré le poème de Benjamin Sulte.

Bytown is the former name of Ottawa, Canada's capital city. It was founded on on September 26, 1826, incorporated as a town on January 1, 1850, and superseded by the incorporation of the City of Ottawa on January 1, 1855. The founding was marked by a sod turning, and a letter from Governor General Dalhousie which authorized Lieutenant Colonel John By to divide up the town into lots. Bytown came about as a result of the construction of the Rideau Canal and grew largely due to the Ottawa River timber trade. Bytown's first mayor was John Scott, elected in 1847.
Bytown was located where the Rideau Canal meets the Ottawa River and consisted of two parts centered around the canal, Upper Town and Lower Town. Upper Town, situated to the west of the canal, was situated in the area of the current downtown and Parliament Hill. Lower Town was on the east side of the canal where today's Byward Market and general area of Lower Town still exists. The two areas of town were connected over the Rideau Canal by the Sappers Bridge, constructed in 1827.

Steamboat "Bytown Pumper" (S.S. Pumper) 1993
This is a video my late grandad took of us taking a ride on the "Bytown Pumper" in Ottawa, Canada 1993 61ft long x 14ft wide steel hull She's powered by a 7"&14"x9" Doty Compound (same make as the engines in the R.M.S. Segwun) and a wood-fired scotch-marine boiler. She is now known as the "S.S. Pumper" and was most recently operating (2003) at Niagara On The Lake, Ontario, Canada. Hopefully she will steam again some day. -

Alexandre rend hommage au poète et historien québécois Benjamin Sulte (1841-1923) et à son poème, «Bytown».
Le titre de ce poème fait référence à l’ancien nom de la ville d’Ottawa, fondée en 1826 par le lieutenant-colonel britannique John By (1779-1836). By supervisait alors la construction du canal Rideau, et a dû établir un campement sur le site destiné à héberger les travailleurs. Le village ainsi créé fut nommé Bytown. Une fois terminée la construction du canal, en 1832, les villageois furent amenés à travailler dans l’industrie du bois. Il faut comprendre qu’à l’origine, le territoire d’Ottawa était une riche et épaisse forêt constituée d’une variété d’arbres. Y voyant là une ressource économique considérable (et les droits de coupe étant inexistants à l’époque), l’Angleterre a alors entrepris une exploitation majeure de ces forêts. Des canadiens-français et des immigrants irlandais (surnommés «Shiners») furent embauchés comme bûcherons et draveurs, dans un environnement complètement chaotique et dangereux. À Bytown régnait alors les conflits linguistiques, la violence, l’alcool, la saleté et la misère, le tout au profit de l’économie britannique. C’est cette région et ce contexte misérable de développement économique qui aura inspiré le poème de Benjamin Sulte.

05. Dominion Arboretum
An arboretum. Covers about 26 ha of rolling land between Prince of Wales Drive, Dow's Lake and the Rideau Canal. Displays a wide range of well-established trees and shrubs with the intention of evaluating their hardiness, including 1,700 different species and varieties.
06. Dundonald Park
An urban park. Occupies a city block, with Somerset Street West to the north, Bay Street to the west, MacLaren Street to the south, and Lyon Street to the east. Was named after Douglas Cochrane, 12th Earl of Dundonald, who was the last British officer to command the Canadian militia.
07. Rideau Falls
Two waterfalls located where the Rideau River empties into the Ottawa River. The falls are divided by Green Island, with the Old City Hall just to the south. Were named by the early French for their resemblance to a curtain.
08. Chaudière Falls
A set of cascades and waterfall in the centre of the Ottawa-Gatineau metropolitan area where the Ottawa River narrows between a rocky escarpment on both sides of the river. About 60 metres (200 ft) wide and drop 15 metres (49 ft).
09. Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica
A Minor basilica. Designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1990. Originally home to the small wooden St. Jacques Church built in 1832.
10. Calypso Park
A theme waterpark located in Limoges. Opened to the public on June 7, 2010. Is on a 450 acres (1.8 km2; 0.70 sq mi) site. Canada’s largest waterpark. Calypso Palace is a 52,000-square-foot (4,800 m2) concrete pool, one of the largest in North America.

She's powered by a 7"&14"x9" Doty Compound (same make as the engines in the R.M.S. Segwun) and a wood-fired scotch-marine boiler.
She is now known as the "S.S. Pumper" and was most recently operating (2003) at Niagara On The Lake, Ontario, Canada.
Hopefully she will steam again some day.
