Pentre is a village and community, near Treorchy in Rhondda valley, falling within the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. The village's name is taken from the Welsh word Pentref, which translates as homestead, though Pentre is named after a large farm that dominated the area before the coming of industrialisation. The community takes in the neighbouring village of Ton Pentre.
Pre-1850, the area which is now Pentre was made up of several scattered farms tended by tenant farmers for absentee landlords. With the discovery, in the early 19th century, of economically viable coal deposits in Dinas Rhondda it was not long until expeditions reached the mid valleys. In 1857 Edward Curteis of Llandaff leased the mineral rights of Tyr-y-Pentre from Griffith Llewellyn of Baglan and soon had two levels opened, the Pentre and Church. During the early part of 1864 deeper shafts had been sunk by the Pentre Coal Company. The mines in the Pentre were some of the most profitable of all the collieries in the Rhondda.
Pentre Ifan is the name of an ancient manor in the civil parish of Nevern, Pembrokeshire, Wales. It contains and gives its name to the largest and best preserved neolithic dolmen in Wales. The Pentre Ifan monument is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and was one of three Welsh monuments to receive legal protection under the Ancient Monuments Protection Act 1882. It is now in the guardianship of Cadw, with public access.
As it now stands, the Pentre Ifan Dolmen is a collection of 7 principal stones. The largest is the huge capstone, 5 metres (16 ft) long, 2.4 metres (7.9 ft) wide and 0.9 metres (3.0 ft) thick. It is estimated to weigh 16 tonnes and rests on the tips of three other stones, some 2.5 metres (8.2 ft) off the ground. There are six upright stones, three of which support the capstone. Of the remaining three, two portal stones form an entrance and the third, at an angle, appears to block the doorway.
The dolmen dates from approximately 3,500 B.C. and has traditionally been identified as a communal burial. Under this theory the existing stones formed the portal and main chamber of the tomb, which would originally have been covered by a large mound of stones about 30 metres (98 ft) long and 17 m wide. Some of the kerbstones, marking the edge of the mound have been identified during excavations. The stone chamber was at the southern end of the long mound, which stretched off to the north. Very little of the material that formed the mound remains. Some of the stones have been scattered, but at least seven are in their original position. An elaborate entrance facade surrounding the portal, which may have been a later addition, was built with carefully constructed dry stone walling. Individual burials are thought to have been made within the stone chamber, which would be re-used many times. No trace of bones were found in the tomb, raising the possibility that they were subsequently transferred elsewhere.

Ton Pentre (Welsh: Tonpentre) is a village in the Rhondda Valley in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. Ton Pentre, a former industrial coal mining village, is a district of the community of Pentre. The old district of Ystradyfodwg was named after the church at Ton Pentre. Ton Pentre is, perhaps, best known for an incident in 1924, when The Duke of York (later George VI of the United Kingdom) played a round of golf with Frank Hodges.
One of the earliest recorded settlements in Ton Pentre is an Iron Age hillfort located at Maindy Camp. Although initially believed to have been from the Bronze Age period, the camp was misidentified due to items from a Bronze Age cairn that were found inside the camp perimeter.
The area on which Ton Pentre now stands was originally the site of a cluster of platform houses or hafodi; small farming buildings, occupied only during the summer months. The site was later settled by a farm and a few cottages, known as 'Y Ton' ('meadow') the site was owned by absentee landlord Crawshay Bailey. To distinguish the area from nearby Tonypandy, it became known as Ton Pentre.

Un funud arbennig ymh Mhentre Ifan gyda'm gwraig Sally a'r defaid -- My wife Sally and I, hamming (sheeping?) it up at Pentre Ifan, at the tail end of Hurricane Bertha. According to an old family tradition, our ancestors came from here and neighbouring Llwyngwair. Pentre Ifan (Evan's Village) was named for Ifan ab Owain (Evan son of Owen.) Translation of song (Brethyn Cartref): "But the sheep still graze in the Land of Song [Wales] "And on them the wool still grows "For the woolen cloth of mountain sheep..." Perhaps I should feel sheepish about this performance.

It's about time I made a compilation of some of the clips I have collected from various parts of Wales in the past year, especially now it's that time of year when I don't travel. I used a free program Startrails.exe to do all the hard work but you can also use Photoshop or similar. Pentre Ifan is a burial chamber - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentre_Ifan You will need... - A tripod; I used a GorillaPod SLR to get the camera low down and have as much sky as possible - Remote shutter - Patience : to get a nice long strartrail 20+ minutes; you need to be out that long and the clear nights are often the coldest Tips : - Use Manual mode, lowest F number, ISO 400 - Set the exposure time to 30 seconds and when ready press the remote shutter down and then up, to lock in place - this will take continuous shots. - Pre focus on a distant object and set the lens to manual focus - Dark skies work best - Use a torch or car headlights etc to "paint" the foregrou...

Places to see in ( Holywell - UK ) Holywell is the fifth largest town in Flintshire, Wales. It lies to the west of the estuary of the River Dee. The market town of Holywell takes its name from the St Winefride's Well, a holy well surrounded by a chapel. The well has been known since at least the Roman period. It has been a site of Christian pilgrimage since about 660, dedicated to Saint Winefride who, according to legend, was beheaded there by Caradog who attempted to attack her. The well is one of the Seven Wonders of Wales and the town bills itself as The Lourdes of Wales. Many pilgrims from all over the world continue to visit Holywell and the Well. The copper sheathing was used to cover the hulls of the wooden ships trading in the warmer Caribbean waters, giving rise to the expressi...

I see you had your mind all made up you group of
Pitiful liars. Before I woke to face the day, your master
Plan transpired. -Something told me- this job had more to
Meet the eye. My song is not believed? My words some-
What deceiving? Now I'm unwhole.
You've waged a war of nerves
But you can't crush the kingdom
Can't be what your idols are. Can't leave the scar.
You cry for compensation. I ask you please just give
us...
5 minutes alone.. Just give us, 5 minutes alone
I read your eyes, your mind was made up. You took me for
A fool. You used complexion of my skin for a counter
Rascist tool. -You can't burn me- I've spilled my guts
In the past. Taken advantage of because you know where
I've come. My past.
You've waged a war of nerves
But you can't crush the kingdom
Can't be what your idols are. Can't leave the scar.
I bury your compensation. I ask you please just give
us...
