Pan-Germanism (German: Pangermanismus or Alldeutsche Bewegung) is a pan-nationalist political idea. Pan-Germanists originally sought to unify all the German-speaking populations of Europe in a single nation-state known as Greater Germany.
Pan-Germanism was highly influential in German politics in the 19th century during the unification of Germany when the German Empire was proclaimed in as a nation-state in 1871 without Austria (Kleindeutsche Lösung/Lesser Germany), and the first half of the 20th century in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the German Empire. From the late 19th century, many Pan-Germanist thinkers, since 1891 organized in the Pan-German League, had adopted openly ethnocentric and racist ideologies, and ultimately gave rise to the foreign policy Heim ins Reich pursued by Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler from 1938, one of the primary factors leading to the outbreak of World War II. As a result of the disaster of World War II, Pan-Germanism was mostly seen as a taboo ideology in the postwar period in both West and East Germany. Today, Pan-Germanism is mostly limited to some nationalist groups in Germany and Austria.

The rise of pan-Germanism in the 1850's had several societal ramifications. One such was the Romanticism of the viking age seen the Wagnarian operas and the like, the other through the use of runes by SS and its pervasiveness in the Third Reich. This is just a thought on the subject

Emotional scene from third episode of the glamourous ABC TV series "Pan Am", where the lovely and most charming Colette Valois (French-Canadian actress Karine Vanasse °24 November 1983) sings the first verse of the German national anthem. In this series, she's French and was about three years old when the Germans invaded her country and killed some family members. She wants to forgive them and move on with her life, but she finds it very hard to do (understandably), by singing this song at a party (for JFK) at the US mission in West Berlin. Great performance !
There have been some claims (during the Soviet-era especially) that East Germany was originally inhabited by Slavic people and that modern Eastern Germans in the Republic of Germany are actually more Slavic than Germanic, but just how Slavic is East Germany anyways? Believe it or not, there may actually be more truth to this claim than one may think and there is a plethora of historic, genetic and linguistic evidence for the influence of old Slavic tribes on various groups of German-speaking people, and the modern Slavic peoples who still live within the borders of Germany and other Germanic countries to this day. She seems a little lost, with nazi golden locks
She is drawn to my dirt, whenever I'm hurt
And need to be cured
This city never stops
We never do what we should
But when her laugh stops
We never do what we should
When our stops, that's what I really love
All I wanted was to give you something
That I thought you needed
We'll get through the night and survive for a while
She cuts through my frost
With nazi golden locks
I am drawn to the girl who seems to be hurt
But wants to be loved
Our heads never stop
We never do what we should
But when her laugh stops
Guess what I really love
To start again from the top
All I wanted was to give you something
That I thought you needed
