The Olympic Mountains are a mountain range on the Olympic Peninsula of western Washington in the United States. The mountains, part of the Pacific Coast Ranges, are not especially high – Mount Olympus is the highest at 7,962 ft (2,427 m); however, the eastern slopes rise out of Puget Sound and the western slopes are separated from the Pacific Ocean by the 20 to 35 km (12 to 22 mi) wide Pacific Ocean coastal plain. The western slopes are the wettest place in the 48 contiguous states. Most of the mountains are protected within the bounds of the Olympic National Park.
Physiographically, they are a section of the larger Pacific Border province, which is in turn a part of the larger Pacific Mountain System.
The Olympics have the form of a cluster of steep-sided peaks surrounded by heavily forested foothills and incised by deep valleys. They are surrounded by water on three sides, separated from the Pacific by the 20 to 35 km (12 to 22 mi) wide coastal plain. The general form of the range is more or less circular, or somewhat horseshoe-shaped, and the drainage pattern is radial.

In 1788, a British mariner passed by the majestic, snow-covered mountains of northwest Washington - the peaks seemed the perfect dwelling place for Greek gods, so he named them the Olympic Mountains. From: AERIAL AMERICA: Washington http://bit.ly/1plaOSX
After an hour of relaxing on the summit of Mt Ellinor, several Mountain goats started to hike by, they were within feet to us. It was fascinating!
At 8.4 miles round trip and a total elevation gain of 2500 feet this is the most challenging hike I have yet to be on in the Olympic Mountains. It's not the distance or the elevation gain so much that makes this hike strenuous but just the more raw nature of the trail itself. It is pretty steady work, at least I found it so. I think they guys I was with were part Mountain Goat and seemed to readily welcome the challenge. This trail has a reputation for its difficulty and fully lives up to any descriptions I have read about it in Washington Trails Association or any other guides. It's not one of the more well traveled trails in the mountains and the more experienced hikers I traveled with this day refer to it as a "way trail". It's not just a trail that isn't maintained very well but o...

There are two nice camping areas along the way that would open up more possibilities for exploring the area. It's a popular place to spend the 4th of July - you can see Seattle's fireworks from the top of Marmot Pass. The best way to reach Marmot Pass is via the Big Quilcene Trail #833.1. The trail enters the Buckhorn Wilderness right away, and for the first two miles you walk through towering old growth along the Big Quilcene River. Be sure to notice the forest understory - vanilla leaf, trillium, rhododendrons, thim...

We met up with friends to go find a B-17 crash site deep in the Olympic National Forest's Buckhorn Wilderness above the snow line. We also hoped to explore some old mines along the way. MORE ABOUT THE CRASH In 1952 a search-and-rescue B-17 was returning to McChord Air Force Base after assisting with a Canadian rescue mission. Flying in blizzard-like conditions, the plane clipped a ridge and skidded down a steep, snowy slope. Three of the eight crew members were killed in the crash, and the survivors came to rest in a high mountain valley. They built emergency shelters until they were airlifted out the following day. I threw together a quick overnight trip up in to the Olympic Mountains. With me I had my trusty Hennessy Ultralite Explorer Asym zip hammock. Unfortunately after a late start, knee high snow on a 45 degree slope and no snow shoes I was not able to make the designated evening camp. Fortunately the steep mountain slope I was on happened to have a crap load of trees... hammocks like trees. I think it is safe to say that at this point the Hennessy is my go to sleep system for most of my adventures... providing there are trees.
Documentary from 1992 released by Readers Digest. From VHS Box: "Begin your sojourn in Mount Rainier National Park by tracing the fire-and-ice evolution that gave the mountain its spectacular character. Learn about jökulhlaups, the great flash floods created when Rainer's twin forces, volcanic heat and glacial colds collide. At Olympic National Park visit the resplendent Hoh Rain Forest. Continue to the park's glacier-sculpted mountains and to Marymere Falls, Soleduck Falls and Mount Olympus itself."
This is a hike inside the lush green forest of Olympic National Park in Washington state. It starts with a twenty minute hike to the Duckabush river, then back again, totaling nearly 40 minutes in length. The destination of the hike is a place beside the river called "The Ranger (fishing) Hole". About the audio: It was extremely quiet during this hike, and so I added some soothing sounds of indigenous birds. Otherwise, all you would hear is my footsteps and my breathing, and the sound of my jacket sleeves, and an occasional snort by Sasquatch in the woods beside me. I recorded the bird sounds within the Pacific Northwest also - beside a lake in the mountains of Oregon. The Duckabush river roar and other sounds are the actual sounds on location. This video is intended for those using tre...
