Korean Language Flagship Center (
KLFC) at the
University of Hawai'i at Manoa (
UHM) is the first and only
Korean language center in the
United States dedicated to cultivating
Korea specialists with professional-level proficiency in
Korean. The KLFCs goal is to prepare
American students to be capable of functioning in Korean as professionals in their chosen academic or professional fields.

Pre-College Summer Program -
Junior high track: June 15 - July 10, Monday - Friday, 9:00 - 12:00
Senior high track: June 15 - July 24, Monday - Friday, 9:00 - 12:00
Administered in cooperation with the UHM Outreach
College (www.outreach.hawaii.edu), the Pre-College Summer Program is open to college-bound students who have completed the sixth grade. The junior track (June 15 July 10) is for students who have completed the sixth, seventh, eighth, or ninth grade; the senior track (June 15 July 24) is for students who have completed the tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grade. In addition, the senior high school track allows students to earn up to six college credits and fulfill the two-year

In the Pre-College Summer Program, students will develop advanced Korean language skills as well as an in-depth understanding of
Korean culture.
Following an innovative and age-appropriate curriculum, the Pre-College Summer Program will engage students in real-life tasks and projects closely related to subjects they learn at school such as social studies and language arts. In addition, specialists in various areas of
Korean Studies will give guest lectures and hands-on demonstrations on relevant topics.
The goal of the Pre-College Summer Program is to elevate students Korean language proficiency level to Advanced-Low (on the
ACTFL scale). Students who complete this program successfully may consider advancing to the
Certificate in Korean for Professionals or the
B.A. in Korean for Professionals.

Highlights of the Program
Intensive and extensive curriculum
The junior track is a four-week program while the senior track is a six-week program. In both programs, classes meet for three hours a day, Monday through Friday. The total time is 60 and 90 hours for the junior and senior tracks, respectively. This includes both classroom instruction and field projects.
Task-based curriculum
Students will be engaged in real-life tasks and projects incorporating technology and closely related to subjects they study in school.
Content-based curriculum
Specialists will give lectures and hands-demonstrations on various topics relevant to this age group, through which students learn not only Korean language but also
Korean tradition, culture, and society.
UHMs Korean
Flagship Program (
KFP) was established in
2002 as a post-baccalaureate non-degree program. In cooperation with the
Department of
East Asian Languages and Literatures (EALL), the KFP transitioned into the KLFC in
2007 offering a
Master of Arts degree in "Korean for Professionals." In 2008, the KLFC launched a
Bachelor of Arts degree in "Korean for Professionals." Furthermore, a Pre-College Summer Program and a Certificate in "Korean for Professionals" program will start in 2009 and
2010, respectively.

TLF) funded by the
National Security Education Program (
NSEP).
