Philippe Jaroussky (born 13 February 1978) is a French countertenor. He began his musical career with the violin, winning an award at the Versailles conservatory and then took up the piano before turning to singing. He is noted for a virtuosic coloratura technique and for compelling and enlivened interpretations of baroque cantatas and operas.
Jaroussky was inspired to sing by the Martinique-born countertenor Fabrice di Falco. He received his diploma from the Early Music Faculty of the Conservatoire de Paris. Since 1996, he has studied singing with Nicole Fallien. He has formed his own ensemble called Artaserse, and also often performs with the Ensemble Matheus under Jean-Christophe Spinosi and with L'Arpeggiata under Christina Pluhar.
According to La Terrasse, "this young singer with the tone of an angel and the virtuosity of the devil has come into the limelight in only a few years as the great new French vocal talent." He received the 2007 best French lyrical artist award. Jaroussky was awarded "The Best Singer of the Year" at the Echo Classic Awards, 2008. He also received an Echo Classic Award in 2012 for the Album Duetti, which he recorded together with Max Emanuel Cencic.

Greg Pritchard is a countertenor - ie male singing voice whose vocal range is equivalent to that of a contralto, mezzo-soprano, or a soprano. Usually countertenors sing through use of falsetto as appears to be the case with Greg singing Nessun Dorma here (as Paul Potts did 2 years previously).

Centuries ago the Fach system was created, a system whose function was to better classify classic voices. To do that, it considers many aspects in due to organize better the human voice, those aspects are many as: weight, size, color, range and even acting. Inside the male voices, the Countertenors are the lightest and most exotic ones. The characteristics of a true Countertenor are: a tessitura closest to the female voice, exquisite coloratura and fioratura skills, An extremely contrasting lower register and great affinity with the high notes, and in this video we are going to show many examples of these… Philippe Jaroussky, Andreas Scholl, David Hansen, Alex Newell and Chriss Colfer.

Countertenor Christopher Lowrey sings the aria Ombra mai fù, from Handel's opera *Serse.* 4K, Ultra HD video from the Voices of Music "Art of the Countertenor" concert, March, 2016. Handel’s arias form one of the core repertories for singers of 18th-century music, owing not only to the quality of the compositions but also to the variety of affects and styles present in his operas, oratorios and sacred music. The aria “Ombra mai fù,” known also as “Handel’s Largo,” is one of his best-known works; somewhat surprisingly, it comes down to us through a circuitous path. The original version was composed by Cavalli in the mid-17th century, then “borrowed” by Bononcini for his 1694 production of the opera Serse, then substantially revised by Handel for his own version of Serse which premiered in ...

Here is one of the greatest master-pieces of Georg Friedrich Haendel - Lascia chio pianga. It was very innovative at the time of Haendel, but very fast became a "Hit" in Europe. The lyrics literally say - let me cry! One can really cry upon the beauty and the purity of the voice of the counter-tenor Philippe Jaroussky!

Pourquoi s'attaquer aujourd'hui ...

Philippe Jaroussky Interview on 18.03.04 in Genéve ( about the Oratorio " Israel in Egypt" by Händel). Interview de Philippe Jaroussky, contre-ténor et révélation lyrique aux Victoires de la musique classique, au sujet de l'oratorio de Haendel "Israël en Egypte" 18 mars 2004. "Israel in Egypt," the fifth of the nineteen oratorios which Handel composed in England, was written in 1738, the composition of the whole colossal work occupying but twenty-seven days. It was first performed April 4, 1739, at the King's Theatre, of which Handel was then manager. It is essentially a choral oratorio. It comprises no less than twenty-eight massive double choruses, linked together by a few bars of recitative, with five arias and three duets interspersed among them. The oratorio was repeated with chan...
