The Ganges (

listen) ); , is a trans-boundary river of India and Bangladesh. The 2,525 km (1,569 mi) river rises in the western Himalayas in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, and flows south and east through the Gangetic Plain of North India into Bangladesh, where it empties into the Bay of Bengal. By discharge it ranks among the world's top 20 rivers. The Ganges basin is the most heavily populated river basin in the world, with over 400 million people and a population density of about 1,000 inhabitants per square mile (390 /km2).
The Ganges is the most sacred river to Hindus and is also a lifeline to millions of Indians who live along its course and depend on it for their daily needs. It is worshiped as the goddess Ganga in Hinduism. It has also been important historically: many former provincial or imperial capitals (such as Patliputra,Kannauj,Kara, Kashi, Allahabad, Murshidabad, Munger, Baharampur and Kolkata) have been located on its banks.

Ganga (2006)
PlotEducated and intelligent, Ganga lives a poor lifestyle with her parents in a small village in India. Shankar comes to her rescue while she is being molested, but ends up being temporarily crippled. One day while performing prayers along the river bank, she chastises Ranjit, the son of wealthy Thakur Vijay Singh. Vijay is impressed by Ganga and arranges their marriage. Shankar's mom approaches Ganga's parents, but is humiliated, as they do not want Ganga to marry a crippled man. Ganga agrees to marry Ranjit, but on the day of the wedding, Ranjit accuses her of having an affair with another man, and refuses to marry her. Shankar again comes to her rescue, gets the culprit to confess, with Ranjit apologizing and offering to marry her. But Ganga refuses, and instead gets married to Shankar, much to the chagrin of her dad, who refuses to bless this marriage. The marriage does take place, and Ganga moves in with Shankar and his family, consisting of his mom, paternal grandmother, brother, Vishnu, and his wife, Jugni. Ganga does not realize that she may have landed from the frying pan into the fire as Jugni does not approve of her, and together with Ranjit, will soon turn Ganga and Shankar's lives upside down.

The day on which the sun begins its journey northwards is referred to as Makara Sankranti. According to Hindus this takes place on the 14th January. This is due to the movement of the Earth with regards to the Sun. This festival is based on the Sun and not on the Moon like all others and for this reason the dates are for the English Calendar.

PLZ KEEP MAA GANGA CLEAN “Propman” Abdull River Ganga/Ganges with its source in the mighty Himalayan mountains is considered to be the most sacred river by Hindus. The waters of Ganga ( Ganga jal) is believed to be self cleansing in nature and it is said that a single dip in the waters of this holy river will wash away all the sins of a person
The last rites of the thousands of Hindus are performed at the numerous ghats along the shores of Ganga at the holy sites like Kashi, Varanasi etc. Thousands of human bodies are consigned to this holy river. Millions of Hindus take bath in the waters of this river day in and out and millions more in a single day during festival seasons throughout the year. And yet there is no sign of contagious diseases spreading from person to person due to contact through this river water! Nor is there any sign of things like skin disorders etc after bathing in this river!

In 1896, E. Hanbury Hankin (a British physician) after testing the water of Ganga wrote in a paper published in the French journal Annales de IInstitut Pasteur ,
The bacterium Vibrio Cholerae which causes the deadly Cholera disease, when put into the waters of Ganga died within three hours! The same bacteria continued to thrive in distilled water even after 48 hours!
He also suggested that the water of this river and its tributary Yamuna were responsible for containing the spread of this deadly disease cholera in the region in those days!!
Water of Ganges has Anti-putrefaction properties
C.E. Nelson, another British physician noticed that, the waters of Ganga when taken even from one of its dirtiest mouths at Hooghly, by the ships returning to England, remained fresh throughout the long journey!! Normally river water begins to putrefy over a period of time due to lack of oxygen which promotes the growth of anaerobic bacteria, which in turn gives rise to the smell of stale water.

'Gunga Jumna' is a Dacoit drama having two brothers on opposites sides of the law. In the small village of Haripur, widowed Govindi (Leela Chitnis) lives with her two sons, Gungaram (Dilip Kumar) and Jumna (Nasir Khan). While Jumna is studious, Gungaram is the opposite, but has a good heart and decides to use his earnings to ensure his brother gets a decent education. Their mother dies of shock after she is accused and arrested for theft and Gungaram is left to look after Jumna. He sends Jumna to the city for studies and during the course of his studies, Gunga is forced to sell all his belongings. Later, Gunga is framed for a crime he did not commit by the wicked landlord Hariram (Anwar Hussain) and he becomes a bandit living in the mountains with his love, Dhanno (Vyjayantimala). Meanwhile, Jumna, educated on Gunga's money in the city, becomes an upright police officer. Fate play a cruel game where Jumna is pitted against his own brother and must arrest him at any cost. Plot - Thakur Hansraj (Amrish Puri) is very greedy and kills his brother-in-law. Using false means, he takes the signature of his sister Bharati Devi (Nirupa Roy) on the property papers claiming that she has transferred the entire property to him. When his sister learns about it, she gets very angry. The son of Bharati Devi, Ganga (Amitabh Bachchan) takes a pledge that he will one day take revenge on Thakur at the same place.
Ganga becomes a truck driver who transports goods. Jamuna (Meenakshi Sheshadri) jumps on the truck one day to save herself from Bheema who is after her. Ganga has to stop the truck as the road ahead is blocked. It starts raining heavily and the only staying place nearby is for honeymoon couples. Ganga decides to go there to get shelter with Jamuna pretending they are a couple. The next day, when Bheema comes to take Jamuna away forcibly, Ganga fights with him. Jamuna falls in deep ice and there is no fire nearby to save her life which forces Ganga to have sexual relations with her.
Ganga is arrested for beating up Thakur's son and is jailed for two years. When he returns, Thakur sends his person to kill him. A blast takes place at the bridge and Jamuna and their child fall into the river. Ganga gets hold of his child but cannot find Jamuna. Jamuna reaches the home of Shankar (Mithun Chakraborty) who fell in love with her the first time he saw her during one of his qawaali programmes. Jamuna has forgotten her identity. There also is the involvement of Saraswati (Jaya Prada) who loves Ganga. Will Jamuna get her memory back? Will Ganga find her? What will happen to Thakur? Whom will Ganga be with ultimately, Jamuna or Saraswati? And anyone could guess the climax of movie that Ganga and Jamuna will unite and Saraswati has to sacrifice.

Ganga (Mayuri), a poor servant, falls in love with one of the Maanikkasheri family member Devan (Madhupal) and gets pregnant. When the Maanikkasheri family come to know about it they angrily kick Ganga out of the house and arrange for the funeral of unconscious Ganga thinking her to be dead. Ganga regains consciousness and asks for water,but Devan's father (Spadikam George) angrily finishes the funeral by setting up the fire and burning Ganga alive. Ganga return as a vengeful spirit haunting the family. Devan (Madhupal) commits suicide and Spadikam George is brutally killed by Ganga. The Manikyasseri family hires a priest Meppadan (Rajan P. Dev) who exorcises Ganga into a tree with a Long nail. Also he advises Manikyasseri family that the men in the family should remain as a bachelor and if anyone fails to follow this, no one will be able to protect them from Ganga's vengeful spirit. He warns them that Ganga's spirit should never be freed and that if Ganga's spirit is freed then no one has the power to control her anymore.
Daisy/Maya (Divya Unni), a playful college girl accidentally removes the nail from the tree when she goes to an excursion with her friends. She faints and goes missing after that. It is revealed later that she has been possessed by Ganga's spirit, who then attracts the Unni kuttan, young bachelor of Maanikkasheri family and marry him without the knowledge of the family. When the Maanikkasheri family come to know about this they accept them with one condition that they should not have intercourse thereby spoiling his brahmacharyam.
Daisy tricks her husband to have intercourse with her thereby breaking the brahmacharyam and making Ganga more powerful. Once again when the haunting starts members of Maanikkasheri family realise that Daisy is actually possessed by Ganga. They arrange a pooja to get rid of Ganga and finally succeed in it. Daisy become unconscious & and the hospital it is revealed that she do not remember any thing happened when she was possessed by the spirit.
Mukesh is Daisy's fiance,who is now ready to accept Daisy even after knowing everything about her. Now pregnant Daisy reveals her intention to stay with her husband, even though she doesn't know him she believes in his Love for her. They live happily ever after.

Ganga (Mayuri), a poor servant, falls in love with one of the Maanikkasheri family member Devan (Madhupal) and gets pregnant. When the Maanikkasheri family come to know about it they angrily kick Ganga out of the house and arrange for the funeral of unconscious Ganga thinking her to be dead. Ganga regains consciousness and asks for water,but Devan's father (Spadikam George) angrily finishes the funeral by setting up the fire and burning Ganga alive. Ganga return as a vengeful spirit haunting the family. Devan (Madhupal) commits suicide and Spadikam George is brutally killed by Ganga. The Manikyasseri family hires a priest Meppadan (Rajan P. Dev) who exorcises Ganga into a tree with a Long nail. Also he advises Manikyasseri family that the men in the family should remain as a bachelor and if anyone fails to follow this, no one will be able to protect them from Ganga's vengeful spirit. He warns them that Ganga's spirit should never be freed and that if Ganga's spirit is freed then no one has the power to control her anymore.
Daisy/Maya (Divya Unni), a playful college girl accidentally removes the nail from the tree when she goes to an excursion with her friends. She faints and goes missing after that. It is revealed later that she has been possessed by Ganga's spirit, who then attracts the Unni kuttan, young bachelor of Maanikkasheri family and marry him without the knowledge of the family. When the Maanikkasheri family come to know about this they accept them with one condition that they should not have intercourse thereby spoiling his brahmacharyam.
Daisy tricks her husband to have intercourse with her thereby breaking the brahmacharyam and making Ganga more powerful. Once again when the haunting starts members of Maanikkasheri family realise that Daisy is actually possessed by Ganga. They arrange a pooja to get rid of Ganga and finally succeed in it. Daisy become unconscious & and the hospital it is revealed that she do not remember any thing happened when she was possessed by the spirit.
Mukesh is Daisy's fiance,who is now ready to accept Daisy even after knowing everything about her. Now pregnant Daisy reveals her intention to stay with her husband, even though she doesn't know him she believes in his Love for her. They live happily ever after.
