Edison Award

The Edison music award is an annual Dutch music prize, awarded for outstanding achievements in the music industry. It is one of the oldest music awards in the world, having been presented since 1960.

Origins

The first Edisons — named after the inventor of the phonograph, Thomas Alva Edison — were awarded in October 1960 at the inaugural Grand Gala du Disque, held at the Kurhaus hall in the coastal resort of Scheveningen. The broadcast, which was a joint venture of TV broadcaster AVRO and the Netherlands' major record companies, featured dozens of acts and went on for hours. In the years that followed, the Grand Gala du Disque became an annual event with legendary status. The 1963 event, which overran by almost two hours, saw Marlene Dietrich, Sarah Vaughan and Charles Aznavour accepting an Edison.

Each year, Edisons were awarded in two main categories: International artists and domestic (Dutch) artists, in various musical styles such as pop, vocal, jazz, instrumental, children and (in the early years) a separate award for French-language music.

Edison Awards

The Edison Awards honor excellence in new product and service development, marketing, human-centered design and innovation. Award winners represent "game changing" products, services and excellence and leadership in innovation around four criteria: Concept, Value, Delivery and Impact. The Awards are named after innovator Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) and symbolize the persistence and excellence in innovation personified by him. Additionally, Edison Green Awards and Edison Achievement Awards are bestowed each year. Originally established in 1987 by the American Marketing Association, The Edison Awards became an independent organization in 2008.

The Edison Award

Annually, beginning in September, nominations are sought from product and service innovators in fifteen categories. Nominations are vetted by members of the Edison Award Steering Committee, who present a slate of finalists to the Panel of Judges. The panel is composed of over 3,000 senior business executives and academics from across the nation, whose votes acknowledge excellence in meeting the award criteria - concept, value, delivery and impact. Awards are presented at an annual event, usually in April. Past events have been held in New York, NY, Chicago, IL, and San Francisco, CA. Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards are given in each category.

Award

An award is something given to a person, a group of people, or an organization to recognize their excellence in a certain field; a certificate of excellence. Awards are often signified by trophies, titles, certificates, commemorative plaques, medals, badges, pins, or ribbons. An award may carry a monetary prize given to the recipient; for example, the Nobel Prize for contributions to society or the Pulitzer Prize for literary achievements. An award may also simply be a public acknowledgment of excellence, without any tangible token or prize.

Overview

Awards can be given by any person or institution, although the prestige of an award usually depends on the status of the awarder. Usually, awards are given by an organization of some sort, or by the office of an official within an organization or government. For instance, a special presidential citation (as given by the President of the United States) is a public announcement giving an official place of honor (e.g., President Ronald Reagan gave a special presidential citation in 1984 to the Disney Channel for its excellent children's television programming.)

Vijay (actor)

Vijay (born Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar) is an Indian film actor and playback singer who works in the Tamil film industry. Son of film director and producer S. A. Chandrasekhar, he started his career as a child actor in the movie Vetri and later made his debut as a lead actor in the 1992 film Naalaya Theerpu, both of which were directed by his father. He also launched the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, a social welfare organisation in 2009. Vijay was listed 41 in Forbes India's "Celebrity 100 List" for the year 2014 and is ranked higher than any Tamil actor.

Career

1992–1996

During his childhood, Vijay performed in a number of minor roles with Vijayakanth directed by his father. He debuted as a lead role actor in the 1992 film Naalaya Theerpu, produced by his father and then co-starred with Vijayakanth in his second film Sendhoorapandi. He had lead roles in films like Rasigan, Deva, and Rajavin Parvaiyile where he co-starred with another actor Ajith Kumar, who played supporting roles. He then acted in the romantic comedy Vishnu and romantic tragedy Chandralekha later. In early 1995, he starred in Coimbatore Mappillai a romantic comedy film.
