July 13, 2015. Bike is a 1987 Dnepr with an IZH sidecar. Heading away from the Finnish border from another beautiful campsite near a lake. Some nice rough road in the rain and mud. Rain starts around 8:30 and stays until the end... Later found out that we were on this road (after we blew by our turn to the main road at 17:55. Yeah, the campsite was WAY off the road...) because none of the other guys had ever ridden it and just wanted to check it out.
On May 9th Russia will mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the second world war, known to Russians as the Great Patriotic War. It ought to be a moment for joint commemoration between Russia and the West. Instead, “Victory day” as it is called in Russia, has come to serve as a reminder to Russians that their overwhelming contribution to the defeat of Nazi Germany was never properly recognised by Britain and America. This year, to add further insult, most Western leaders have refrained from attending the celebration, a decision that many Russians will see as confirmation of their continued struggle against the West. How do Russians see the West? The mainstream view is that America is anti-Russian. In fact, some 81% of Russians see the country as a threat to Russia. Anti-Americanism has...
How should the West deal with Putin’s Russia? For the U.S. and some European powers the answer is obvious: isolate Russia with punishing economic sanctions, remove it from global institutions such as the G8, and arm the nations directly threatened by Putin. In short, return to the Cold War doctrine that froze Soviet aggression in Europe and helped bring about the collapse of communist Russia. Others argue that such a policy is a dead-end. Putin’s Russia has legitimate grievances against Western and NATO powers meddling in its sphere of influence. Instead of further antagonizing Putin and risking a dangerous escalation of the current conflict, the U.S. and Europe should seek common cause with Russia to address shared threats, from the Middle East to Asia to combatting terrorism. The West has used everything from signals intelligence operations, espionage, fighter jet saber-rattling, and diplomatic standoffs to stem the rise of Russian influence around the world. These efforts are coming to a dangerous head in Ukraine — a classic Eastern Bloc proxy state — where the presence of NATO troops is driving tensions to Cold War-era levels. As the armed conflict between the Ukrainian army and Russian-backed separatists enters its third year, VICE travels to the frontline to take a closer look at what international assistance really looks like for those caught in the line of fire. http://democracynow.org - The United Nations has raised the death toll from fighting in eastern Ukraine to more than 5,300 people since last April following the ouster of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych one year ago this month. Another 1.5 million people have been displaced. As fighting intensifies, the Obama administration is now considering directly arming Ukrainian forces against Russian-backed rebels. Washington already supplies nonlethal military equipment to Ukraine, but top officials are reportedly leaning toward sending arms, from rifles to anti-tank weapons. The role of the U.S. and European allies in Ukraine has prompted former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to accuse the West of dragging Russia into a new Cold War. The lecture discusses relations between various Russian actors (activists, politicians, organisations, media, officials, etc.) and the Western far right. It provides a historical perspective, discussing the pro-Soviet or pro-Russian views of particular Western far right activists, but its major focus is contemporary Russia. As Moscow has become more anti-Western, contacts with the Western far right have become more intense and have operated at a high level. The lecture shows that the Russian establishment was first interested in using the Western far right to legitimise Moscow’s politics and actions both domestically and internationally, but more recently Moscow has begun to support particular far right political forces to gain leverage on European politics and undermine the liberal-democr...

Four hundred miles west of Moscow is St. Petersburg, Russia. A striking city resting on the banks of the Neva River, St. Petersburg has long been a draw for lovers of architecture, as St. Petersburg tours often begin with the city's legendary structures. As the decades passed, later members of Russian royalty added to the city's opulence by constructing additional marvels. Walk through the Palace Square, located in the heart of St. Petersburg and home of the Winter Palace, the sprawling home of Catherine the Great. Next, pay a visit to St. Isaac's Cathedral and its gold-plated dome, which glitters in the sunshine. If you walk to the top of its dome, you wi...

Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) have always considered "the West" - and the United States in particular - the ultimate enemy. But following President Vladimir Putin's policy of military involvement in Syria, Russia may have taken its place as ISIL's main target. "At the moment ISIL's rage is directed at Bashar al-Assad and Putin. They are the main enemies of ISIL because Russia has smashed ISIL in Syria and the same in Iraq. They will do anything to get their revenge on Russia," says Ahmad Saeedi, Dawat University, Kabul. Thousands of ISIL fighters from Syria, Iraq and elsewhere are regrouping in the virtually impregnable mountains of Afghanistan, plotting revenge against the Kremlin. ISIL's high command have given orders to target Russi...

https://www.soas.ac.uk/cisd/ Dramatic developments in Russia-Western relations have attracted an outpouring of commentary. For the most part, however, analysts have not explicitly addressed the connection between these events and international relations theories. Theory is a necessary part of analyzing complex events. After all, at stake in debates over increased tensions between Russia and the west are classic issues in international relations theory, from levels of analysis, to agency vs. structure, economic vs. political incentives, etc. Whether seeking to explain the shift in inter-state relation between Russia and its western partners or to recommend policy responses, analysts must invoke theory. And events, in turn, inevitably help scholars clarify and update theories. The util...
