Public Service Broadcasting unveil the video for the first single from their upcoming second album, 'The Race For Space'. A brassy, funk-heavy superhero theme song for the most famous man in the world at the time, ‘Gagarin’ reveals a new side to the band – not least their considerable dancing skills.
Once again given access to newly acquired BFI footage, this time of the Soviet space race, PSB’s J. Willgoose, Esq. explained the rationale behind the song: “We didn’t want to be too literal in our interpretation of the material we were given – material that was full of heroic language and a sense of exuberance, with lines like ‘the hero who blazed the trail to the stars’, and ‘the whole world knew him and loved him’. It seemed more appropriate to try and re-create some of that triumphant air with a similarly upbeat song – and when it came to creating the video, the best way we could think of to communicate that sense of joy was to get our dancing shoes on.”
Contains footage from 'Voyage to the Stars', '10 Years In Space', 'Man Remains on Earth', 'Man Returns from Space' & 'Red Moon', all BFI National Archive and used with kind permission

The London-based instrumental-rock duo Public Service Broadcasting visited Houston Public Media's Geary Studio to record a couple songs while on tour during March. The duo mines vintage audio recordings, like the dialogue between astronauts and NASA Mission Control during the Apollo 11 moon landing mission, and creates a kind of soundtrack to the historical narrative. The music contains elements of droning shoegaze, shimmery Britpop and driving krautrock, delivered by a couple of bespectacled academicians, clearly playing the roles of musical educators (and entertainers). PSB performed "Spitfire," based on the story of British inventor R.J. Mitchell, designer of the Spitfire aircraft, credited for helping the Royal Air Force win the Battle of Britain in 1940; and "Go," a composition inspired by the 1969 Apollo 11 manned lunar mission.

Public Service Broadcasting are releasing live favourite 'The Other Side' this September. Filmed live at Secret Garden Party Festival in July 2015.
J. Willgoose, Esq., the mastermind behind PSB, describes the track as the "most emotional moment" on the album as it delivers emotive charges of drama, heroism and wonder.
Stereogum who premiered the song wrote: "Featuring clips of the Apollo 8 launch, 'The Other Side' plays like an epic sci-fi score that you can dance to at times. Short PA communications from ground control in Houston are enveloped by a synth bass sequence and a simple drum pattern which fades as the Apollo 8 comes into some peril toward the middle of the track. As ground control loses communication and the urgency in the agent's voice grows, the instrumentation returns to build to a climax with atmospheric synths, crashing cymbals, and more complex drum hits."

London Can Take It by Public Service Broadcasting.
The second track from the EP 'The War Room', London Can Take It is adapted from a 1941 film filed by an American war correspondent, Quentin Reynolds, about the Blitz.
Footage from 'London Can Take It' is copyright BFI National Archive / COI and is used with kind permission.
J. Willgoose, Esq. and Wrigglesworth sample old public information films and archive material and set them to new music. Live, the films are screened simultaneously as laptops are fiddled with, drums are pounded, theremins are wafted at, guitars are bashed and banjos furiously plucked. Teaching the lessons of the past through the music of the future.

October 4th 1957 marked the start of the space age, when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I. The Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory was the largest radio telescope in the world and the only device that could track Sputnik’s carrier rocket.
The Lovell Telescope picked up Sputnik on 11 October 1957 – on the anniversary of that date in 2015, Public Service Broadcasting filmed the video for ‘Sputnik’ in front of the iconic structure.
The video celebrates the launch of the first satellite into earth orbit and highlight The Lovell Telescope’s role in making space exploration history.
The ‘Sputnik/Korolev’ EP will be released on 12” vinyl, CD & digital on 20 Novemberalong with 4 stellar remixes from Blond:ish, Petar Dundov, Eagles & Butterflies & Plugger.

Watch Public Service Broadcasting perform "The Other Side" live in the Soundcheck studio.
Part musical group, part performance-art outfit, Public Service Broadcasting is the innovative and geeky work of Londoners J. Willgoose, Esq. and Wrigglesworth. The two earned their reputation for marrying looped dance beats and electronics with spoken-word passages culled from old public-service messages, synced to meticulously edited film footage projected while they perform.
With The Race For Space, Willgoose and Wrigglesworth incorporate original news broadcasts and communications between the astronauts and NASA's master control. Full of buoyant, disco-infused beats and ambient soundscapes, the song cycle retells the American and Soviet tentpole events of the space race between 1957 and 1972 — roughly from Sputnik to Apollo 17 — and lets us hear that historical arc the way many experienced it at the time. The result is ambitious and gorgeous concept music that allows listeners to rekindle the wonder and allure of the cosmos.

On this rare occasion, at the site of the first BBC transmission (Alexandra Palace), J.Willgoose gives a rare talk about their unique approach and creative process, he introduces PSB's upcoming album 'The Race For Space' followed by a mesmerising set of their past material. We eagerly await the release in Feb 2015.
Plummy British accents, propaganda clips and electro synths in tow, Public Service Broadcasting are currently wowing adoring crowds around the world! Little is known about the masterminds behind this two-man outfit other than their names – J. Willgoose, Esq. And Wrigglesworth. Their music involves plucking samples from archival material and merging these with rich electronic tapestries and live instruments. Having just completed a stellar worldwide tour following a critically-acclaimed debut album, it's an absolute honour to have them join us at LLs.
