A talk presented at the inaugural KCL National Conference for Islam and Medicine 2013: History of Islamic Medicine
The resilient believer is more treasured by God than the weak one, therefore health and being healthy is vital in keeping us resilient, which in turn enables us to undergo our daily life and carry out our responsibilities, worshipping God as he deserves to be worshipped.
The Qur'an and the Sunnah, the two main sources of Islam, both have advice and guidelines about health and disease. Treatment and recovery are mentioned in several locations.
In Qur'an, the word 'recovery' is stated in six different verses, each one of which gives a separate message with its own meaning and interpretation. In Sunnah there is a vast number of hadiths stating the importance of health and seeking medical treatment. For example, in Hadith Narrated Usamah ibn Sharik: "I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his Companions were sitting as if they had birds on their heads. I saluted and sat down. The desert Arabs then came from here and there. They asked: Apostle of Allah, should we make use of medical treatment? He replied: Make use of medical treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it, with the exception of one disease, namely old age".
There is a misconception among Muslims that there is no need to seek medical treatment as sickness is from God and cure is from God, therefore why bother about medical treatment? Seeking medical treatment does not contradict the verse from Qur'an "And when I am ill, it is He who cures me" [Surat Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) 26:80]
It is very clear that we as Muslims were not only advised to seek medical treatment, but also to find out more about the conditions which have no treatment discovered for them yet. The aim of this lecture is to introduce the concept of evidence based Prophetic Medicine, in particular the recommendations of the Prophet (PBUH) and the existing scientific evidence which proves them.
The lecture will include a selection of the recommendations and discuss their evidence either from the literature or from the presenter's own research. This will provide a flavour of evidence based Prophetic Medicine, as a stimulus to encourage further study to extend the scientific evidence.
The two main findings from literature and personal experience are: firstly, there are no side effects from any of the methods of treatment recommended by the Qur'an or Sunnah; and secondly, the efficacy of the recommended treatments extends beyond the presenting condition.
In conclusion: I hope the lecture will be an invitation to all Muslim health professionals, from whatever field, to research one of the many recommendations of the Prophet regarding health, in order to provide a scientific evidence for each of these recommendations. By doing this, we can present these treatments, which we believe in and know to be effective, to the wider scientific community in terms they will accept.

In the history of medicine, Islamic medicine, Arabic medicine or Arabian medicine refers to medicine developed in the Islamic Golden Age, and written in Arabic, the lingua franca of Islamic civilization. The emergence of Islamic medicine came about through the interactions of the indigenous Arab tradition with foreign influences. Translation of earlier texts was a fundamental building block in the formation of Islamic medicine and the tradition that has been passed down.
Latin translations of Arabic medical works had a significant influence on the development of medicine in the high Middle Ages and early Renaissance, as did Arabic texts which translated the medical works of earlier cultures.

Hamza Yusuf Hanson is an American Islamic scholar, and (with Zaid Shakir and Hatem Bazian) is co-founder of Zaytuna College in Berkeley, California, United States. He is a convert to Islam, and is one of the signatories of A Common Word Between Us and You, an open letter by Islamic scholars to Christian leaders, calling for peace and understanding. He has described the 9/11 attacks as "an act of 'mass murder, pure and simple'". Condemning the attacks, he has also stated "Islam was hijacked ... on that plane as an innocent victim".The Guardian newspaper in the United Kingdom reported that he "is arguably the west's most influential Islamic scholar" and added that "many Muslims find his views hard to stomach."
Hamza Yusuf was born to two academics in Washington State and raised in Northern California. In 1977, he became Muslim and subsequently traveled to the Muslim world and studied for ten years in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, as well as North and West Africa. Hamza Yusuf spent four years studying in the United Arab Emirates and elsewhere in the Middle East. Later he traveled to West Africa and studied in Mauritania, Medina, Algeria, and Morocco under such scholars as Murabit al Haaj; Baya bin Salik, head of the Islamic court in Al-'Ain, United Arab Emirates; Muhammad Shaybani, Mufti of Abu Dhabi; Hamad al-Wali; and Muhammad al-Fatrati of Al Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt.[citation needed] After more than a decade abroad, he returned to the United States and earned degrees in nursing from Imperial Valley College and religious studies at San José State University.[citation needed]

A talk presented at the inaugural KCL National Conference for Islam and Medicine 2013: History of Islamic Medicine
The resilient believer is more treasured by God than the weak one, therefore health and being healthy is vital in keeping us resilient, which in turn enables us to undergo our daily life and carry out our responsibilities, worshipping God as he deserves to be worshipped.
The Qur'an and the Sunnah, the two main sources of Islam, both have advice and guidelines about health and disease. Treatment and recovery are mentioned in several locations.
In Qur'an, the word 'recovery' is stated in six different verses, each one of which gives a separate message with its own meaning and interpretation. In Sunnah there is a vast number of hadiths stating the importance of health and seeking medical treatment. For example, in Hadith Narrated Usamah ibn Sharik: "I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his Companions were sitting as if they had birds on their heads. I saluted and sat down. The desert Arabs then came from here and there. They asked: Apostle of Allah, should we make use of medical treatment? He replied: Make use of medical treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it, with the exception of one disease, namely old age".
There is a misconception among Muslims that there is no need to seek medical treatment as sickness is from God and cure is from God, therefore why bother about medical treatment? Seeking medical treatment does not contradict the verse from Qur'an "And when I am ill, it is He who cures me" [Surat Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) 26:80]
It is very clear that we as Muslims were not only advised to seek medical treatment, but also to find out more about the conditions which have no treatment discovered for them yet. The aim of this lecture is to introduce the concept of evidence based Prophetic Medicine, in particular the recommendations of the Prophet (PBUH) and the existing scientific evidence which proves them.
The lecture will include a selection of the recommendations and discuss their evidence either from the literature or from the presenter's own research. This will provide a flavour of evidence based Prophetic Medicine, as a stimulus to encourage further study to extend the scientific evidence.
The two main findings from literature and personal experience are: firstly, there are no side effects from any of the methods of treatment recommended by the Qur'an or Sunnah; and secondly, the efficacy of the recommended treatments extends beyond the presenting condition.
In conclusion: I hope the lecture will be an invitation to all Muslim health professionals, from whatever field, to research one of the many recommendations of the Prophet regarding health, in order to provide a scientific evidence for each of these recommendations. By doing this, we can present these treatments, which we believe in and know to be effective, to the wider scientific community in terms they will accept.
