Longest Suspension Bridges in The World

This is a school science project Suspension Bridges. It was selected to represent my school for district science fair. We made it from square wooden dowel, plywood, small chain, foam board. All materials easy to find at a local hardware store and around a house. For gluing we used combined hot glue and super glue.

The size is in inches, but the size does not really matter , you can use your imagination how big you want to build it, it will work in any size. For the truck weight (to make the truck more heavy) we used large metal nails (spikes) cut them and glue them together.

When it was completed in 1999 it was the fourth longest suspension bridge span in the world and the longest in China. The Humber Bridge, near Kingston upon Hull, England, is a 2,220-metre (7,280 ft) single-span suspension bridge, which opened to traffic on 24 June 1981. It is the seventh-longest of its type in the world.

The Fourth Nanjing Yangtze Bridge is a suspension bridge over the Yangtze River in Nanjing, China. The bridge is the sixth longest span in the world and the third largest in china.The Nanjing province's first suspension bridge, it lies 10 km downstream of the second Yangtze River Bridge.

1940 Tacoma Narrows Bridge
Slender, elegant and graceful, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge stretched like a steel ribbon across Puget Sound in 1940. The third longest suspension span in the world opened on July 1st. Only four months later, the great span's short life ended in disaster. "Galloping Gertie," collapsed in a windstorm on November 7,1940.
The bridge became famous as "the most dramatic failure in bridge engineering history." Now, it's also "one of the world's largest man-made reefs." The sunken remains of Galloping Gertie were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 to protect her from salvagers.
A dramatic tale of failure and success
The story of the failure of the 1940 Narrows Bridge and the success of the Current Narrows Bridge is a great American saga. When Galloping Gertie splashed into Puget Sound, it created ripple effects across the nation and around the world. The event changed forever how engineers design suspension bridges. Gertie's failure led to the safer suspension spans we use today.

A suspension bridge is a type of bridge in which the deck (the load-bearing portion) is hung below suspension cables on vertical suspenders. Outside Tibet and Bhutan, where the first examples of this type of bridge were built in the 15th century, this type of bridge dates from the early 19th century.[dubious – discuss]Bridges without vertical suspenders have a long history in many mountainous parts of the world.
This type of bridge has cables suspended between towers, plus vertical suspender cables that carry the weight of the deck below, upon which traffic crosses. This arrangement allows the deck to be level or to arc upward for additional clearance. Like other suspension bridge types, this type often is constructed without falsework.
The suspension cables must be anchored at each end of the bridge, since any load applied to the bridge is transformed into a tension in these main cables. The main cables continue beyond the pillars to deck-level supports, and further continue to connections with anchors in the ground. The roadway is supported by vertical suspender cables or rods, called hangers. In some circumstances the towers may sit on a bluff or canyon edge where the road may proceed directly to the main span, otherwise the bridge will usually have two smaller spans, running between either pair of pillars and the highway, which may be supported by suspender cables or may use a truss bridge to make this connection. In the latter case there will be very little arc in the outboard main cables.

This is a school science project Suspension Bridges. It was selected to represent my school for district science fair. We made it from square wooden dowel, plywood, small chain, foam board. All materials easy to find at a local hardware store and around a house. For gluing we used combined hot glue and super glue.

The size is in inches, but the size does not really matter , you can use your imagination how big you want to build it, it will work in any size. For the truck weight (to make the truck more heavy) we used large metal nails (spikes) cut them and glue them together.

Only four months later, the great span's short life ended in disaster. "Galloping Gertie," collapsed in a windstorm on November 7,1940.
The bridge became famous as "the most dramatic failure in bridge engineering history." Now, it's also "one of the world's largest man-made reefs." The sunken remains of Galloping Gertie were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 to protect her from salvagers.

The story of the failure of the 1940 Narrows Bridge and the success of the Current Narrows Bridge is a great American saga.
