Remarks and introduction to Special Guest by His Excellency, Mr. Moon Jae-in, President of the Republic of Korea Remarks and performance by BTS, Special Presidential Envoy for
Future Generations and Culture.
The SDG Moment serves to place an annual spotlight on the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) and will be held at the beginning of the United Nation’s General Assembly’s High-Level Week. It takes place as the world experiences a deeply uneven response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which risks creating a two-tier recovery with significant implications for the advancement of the SDGs, especially in developing countries.
Convened by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Moment will provide world
leaders with a platform to showcase the bold plans, actions and solutions that are needed to end the COVID-19 pandemic and set the world on course towards achieving the SDGs. Held in advance of major meetings on food systems, climate, energy, jobs and social protection, the SDG Moment event is expected to build the momentum needed to deliver on the Decade of Action and Keep the Promise of the SDGs.

Hello Displorers, welcome to another informative video presented to you by Displore and thanks for watching. The coming of the world into its own has brought about the creation of some umbrella organizations to take care of their core issues, set and achieve common goals. One of such organizations is the United Nations, an organization which is very recognizable because of its numerous world activities as well as being part of the political strata of many countries in the world. In this video, we shall have a breakdown of its activities, core creation objectives as well as its successes and criticisms but first of all, what is the United Nations.
If you are new here, welcome, be sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so you don’t miss any of our videos.
The UN and its Objectives
The United Nations is an intergovernmental organization that aims to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation, and be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations. It is the largest, most familiar, most internationally represented and most powerful intergovernmental organization in the world. The UN is headquartered on international territory in New York City, with its other main offices in Geneva, Nairobi, Vienna and The Hague. Its missions have consisted primarily of unarmed military observers and lightly armed troops with primarily monitoring, reporting and confidence-building roles. The UN, its officers, and its agencies have won many Nobel Peace Prizes, though other evaluations of its effectiveness have been mixed. Some commentators believe the organization to be an important force for peace and human development, while others have called it ineffective, biased, or corrupt. To take a side on the activities of the UN and its effects in the world, we need to understand its creation as well as its branches.
Background
In the century prior to the UN's creation, several international treaty organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross were formed to ensure protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and strife. In 1914, a political assassination in Sarajevo set off a chain of events that led to the outbreak of World War I. As more and more young men were sent down into the trenches, influential voices in the United States and Britain began calling for the establishment of a permanent international body to maintain peace in the post-war world. President Woodrow Wilson became a vocal advocate of this concept, and in 1918 he included a sketch of the international body in his 14-point proposal to end the war. In November 1918, the Central Powers agreed to an armistice to halt the killing in World War I. Two months later, the Allies met with Germany and Austria-Hungary at Versailles to hammer out formal peace terms. President Wilson wanted peace, but the United Kingdom and France disagreed, forcing harsh war reparations on their former enemies. The League of Nations was approved, and in the summer of 1919, Wilson presented the Treaty of Versailles and the Covenant of the League of Nations to the US Senate for ratification. On 10 January 1920, the League of Nations formally came into being when the Covenant of the League of Nations, ratified by 42 nations in 1919, took effect. However, at some point the League became ineffective when it failed to act against the Japanese invasion of Manchuria as in February 1933, 40 nations voted for Japan to withdraw from Manchuria but Japan voted against it and walked out of the League instead of withdrawing from Manchuria. It also failed against the Second Italo-Ethiopian War despite trying to talk to Benito Mussolini as he used the time to send an army to Africa, so the League had a plan for Mussolini to just take a part of Ethiopia, but he ignored the League and invaded Ethiopia, the League tried putting sanctions on Italy, but Italy had already conquered Ethiopia and the League had failed. After Italy conquered Ethiopia, Italy and other nations left the league. But all of them realized that it had failed and they began to re-arm as fast as possible. During 1938, Britain and France tried negotiating directly with Hitler but this failed in 1939 when Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia. When war broke out in 1939, the League closed down and its headquarters in Geneva remained empty throughout the war. Although the United States never joined the League, the country did support its economic and social missions through the work of private philanthropies and by sending representatives to committees.

Following a series of security incidents in Kosovo, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Zahir Tanin, today (15 Oct) called for dialogue and said, “history in the region has tragically and repeatedly shown that ostensibly small incidents, misreading of intentions, and outright mistakes can trigger an unstable security escalation that puts lives at risk and benefits no-one.”
Tanin, who is also the Head of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), presented the report of the Secretary-General on Kosovo to the Security Council.
He described clashes stemming from a police operation in northern Kosovo to enforce a new license plate validity regime in September, as well as further protests and clashes this past Wednesday following the deployment of Kosovo Police Special Police Units in the north, as part of what was described as an anti-smuggling operation.
The Foreign Minister of Serbia Nikola Selaković expressed “deep regret and concerns” that the security situation “has been marked by an increasing number of various ethnically motivated attacks and incidents targeting Serbs, which was also stated in the report, that the provisional institutions of self-government in Pristina continue to take unilateral steps and refuse to implement the agreements reached in the Brussels Dialogue, and that institutional discrimination against Serbs, attacks on the sites of Serbian Orthodox Church, and the undermining of the economic sustainability of Serb communities in the province, have continued.”
For her part, the President of Kosovo Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu told the Council that “the Republic of Kosovo today is a free, sovereign, independent country, and an increasingly prosperous country” and said the UN Mission “has not only overstated its mandate, but it is also there in contradiction to the interpretation of the International Court of Justice.”
She urged Council members “to put your budget at a better use.”

🇵🇰 Pakistan - Prime Minister Addresses United Nations General Debate, 76th Session (English)

Imran Khan, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, addresses the general debate of the 76th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 21-27 September 2021).
In a pre-recorded message to the UN General Assembly, the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan called for the international community to “strengthen the current government” of
Afghanistan, “and stabilize it for the sake of the people of Afghanistan.”
“If we neglect Afghanistan right now, according to the UN half the people of Afghanistan are already vulnerable, and by next year almost 90 percent of the people in Afghanistan will go below the poverty line,” Prime Minister Khan said. “There is a huge humanitarian crisis looming ahead. And this will have serious repercussions not just for the neighbours of Afghanistan but it will have repercussions everywhere if a destabilized, chaotic Afghanistan again becomes a safe haven for international terrorists - the reason why the US came to Afghanistan in the first place.”
Khan said that since the Taliban have already promised to respect human rights, have an inclusive government not to let “heir soil to be used by terrorists” and have given amnesty, the world community should “incentivizes them, and encourages them to walk this talk.”
“It will be a win-win situation for everyone,” he concluded.
On Pakistan-India relations, the Prime Minister said “Pakistan desires peace with India, as with all its neighbours.
He underlined however, that a “sustainable peace” in the region depends upon “resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.”
Accusing the government of India for intensifying repression in Kashmir, Khan said, “the onus remains on India to create a conducive environment for meaningful and result-oriented engagement with Pakistan.”
He also named three conditions for it.
“One, reverse its unilateral and illegal measures instituted since 5th August 2019; secondly, stop its oppression and human rights violations against the people of Kashmir; and three, halt and reverse the demographic changes in the occupied territory.”
“India’s military build-up, development of advanced nuclear weapons, and acquisition of destabilising conventional capabilities can erode mutual deterrence between the two countries,” Khan said.
Another issue Khaan addressed in his speech was what he called the plunder of the developing world by their corrupt ruling elites on which he blamed the widening gap between rich and poor.
“What the East India Company did to India, the crooked ruling elites are doing to developing world - plundering the wealth and transferring to western capitals and offshore tax havens,” Prime Minister said, calling on the General Assembly to “take steps meaningfully to address this deeply disturbing, and morally repugnant, situation.”
“Naming and shaming the ‘haven’ destinations and developing a comprehensive legal framework to halt and reverse the illicit financial flows are most critical actions to stop this grave economic injustice,” Khan said.

Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.
The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.
The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world.
But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.
