"Twenty children escaped a burning school bus with their lives thanks to their cool-headed bus driver who leapt into action, authorities say.
Dramatic dash cam video capturing the aftermath of Monday’s rescue in College Park, Maryland, shows the evacuated Glenarden Woods Elementary School bus completely engulfed in heavy smoke and flames.
Driver Renita Smith said she had just finished her third or fourth stop when the bus abruptly started smoking. She started to call for a backup vehicle when flames appeared toward the back.
“I put the mic back down, undid my seatbelt, jumped up, got my babies and got off,” she told ABC News.
“Once we got off, neighbors kicked right into ‘Mommy mode,’ as I call it, and helped the kids get to a safe haven. When that was going on, I ran back onto the bus to make sure there was no children on the bus,” she said. “By the time I got to the last step on the bus, it just went up in smoke.”
Parent Fazlul Kabir, who identified Smith in a Facebook post, lauded her efforts as a hero.
“Not only Reneita took (sic) each one of the 20 kids from the bus one by one, but also went into the empty bus again to check if everyone was out, while it was still burning,” he wrote.”*

Tire fire
Tire fires, where tires are stored, dumped, or processed, exist in two forms: as fast-burning events, leading to almost immediate loss of control, and as slow-burning pyrolysis which can continue for over a decade. They are noted for being difficult to extinguish. Such fires produce much smoke, which often carries toxic chemicals from the breakdown of rubber compounds while burning.
Tire fires are normally the result of arson or improper manipulation with open fire. Tires are not prone to self-ignition as a tire must be heated to at least 400 °C for a period of several minutes prior to ignition.
Extinguishing tire fires is difficult. The fire releases a dark, thick smoke that contains carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and products of butadiene and styrene. Burning tires are heated, and, as they have a low thermal conductivity, they are difficult to cool down. Moreover, they frequently burn inside even if they are extinguished from outside, and easily reignite when hot. One possible remedy is to cover the fire with soil, reducing the supply of oxygen and the exhaust of smoke. After extinguishing and cooling down (which may last several days), toxic chemicals can be neutralized.

Fire
Fire is the rapid oxidation of a material in the exothermic chemical process of combustion, releasing heat, light, and various reaction products. Slower oxidative processes like rusting or digestion are not included by this definition.
Fire is hot because conversion of the weak double bond in molecular oxygen, O2, to the stronger bonds in the combustion products carbon dioxide and water releases energy (418 kJ per 32 g of O2); the bond energies of the fuel play only a minor role here. At a certain point in the combustion reaction, called the ignition point, flames are produced. The flame is the visible portion of the fire. Flames consist primarily of carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen and nitrogen. If hot enough, the gases may become ionized to produce plasma. Depending on the substances alight, and any impurities outside, the color of the flame and the fire's intensity will be different.
Fire in its most common form can result in conflagration, which has the potential to cause physical damage through burning. Fire is an important process that affects ecological systems around the globe. The positive effects of fire include stimulating growth and maintaining various ecological systems. Fire has been used by humans for cooking, generating heat, light, signaling, and propulsion purposes. The negative effects of fire include hazard to life and property, atmospheric pollution, and water contamination. If fire removes protective vegetation, heavy rainfall may lead to an increase in soil erosion by water. Also, when vegetation is burned, the nitrogen it contains is released into the atmosphere, unlike elements such as potassium and phosphorus which remain in the ash and are quickly recycled into the soil. This loss of nitrogen caused by a fire produces a long-term reduction in the fertility of the soil, which only slowly recovers as nitrogen is "fixed" from the atmosphere by lightning and by leguminous plants such as clover.

Dramatic dash cam video capturing the aftermath of Monday’s rescue in College Park, Maryland, shows the evacuated Glenarden Woods Elementary School bus completely engulfed in heavy smoke and flames. Driver Renita Smith said she had just finished her third or fourth stop when the bus abruptly started smoking. She started to call for a backup vehicle when flames appeared toward the back. “I put the mic back down, undid my seatbelt, jumped up, got my babies and got off,” she told ABC News. “Once we got off, neighbors kicked right into ‘Mommy mode,’ as I call it, and helped the kids get to a safe haven. "Twenty children escaped a burning school bus with their lives thanks to their cool-headed bus driver who leapt into action, authorities say.
Dramatic dash cam video capturing the aftermath of Monday’s rescue in College Park, Maryland, shows the evacuated Glenarden Woods Elementary School bus completely engulfed in heavy smoke and flames.
Driver Renita Smith said she had just finished her third or fourth stop when the bus abruptly started smoking. She started to call for a backup vehicle when flames appeared toward the back.
“I put the mic back down, undid my seatbelt, jumped up, got my babies and got off,” she told ABC News.
“Once we got off, neighbors kicked right into ‘Mommy mode,’ as I call it, and helped the kids get to a safe haven. When that was going on, I ran back onto the bus to make sure there was no children on the bus,” she said. “By the time I got to the last step on the bus, it just went up in smoke.”
Parent Fazlul Kabir, who identified Smith in a Facebook post, lauded her efforts as a hero.
“Not only Reneita took (sic) each one of the 20 kids from the bus one by one, but also went into the empty bus again to check if everyone was out, while it was still burning,” he wrote.”*
