MOSCOW — Russian police detained a woman in a hijab brandishing the severed head of a child outside a Moscow metro station on Monday and charged her with murder.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, Feb. 29, stirred fears of an Islamist terrorist attack and was caught on camera by passers-by.
The woman, identified by local media as Gyulchehra Bobokulova, 39, is believed to be the nanny of the victim and is suspected of killing the child before setting fire to its parents' apartment. The child has also been identified by local media as 4-year-old Nastya M.
Earlier in the day, reports emerged that police had found a child's headless body while extinguishing a fire at a Moscow apartment block.
After the murder, Bobokulova was seen outside Oktyabrskoye Pole metro station in northwest Moscow. According to Lifenews.ru, an online news portal with close contacts to the police, a policeman had first approached the woman to check her documents, and that was when the woman removed the child's head from a bag and began shouting that she had killed the infant and threatened to blow herself up.
The woman was also caught on camera shouting, "Allahu Akbar" (Arabic for "God is Great,") leading onlookers to believe they were witnessing an act of terror. She was said to have wandered the area for about an hour.
Footage of the incident showed a policeman wrestling the woman to the ground before a group of colleagues helped restrain her.
"Given the clearly deranged behavior of the detainee, investigators swiftly ordered her to undergo psychiatric tests to establish whether she is capable of understanding the significance of her actions," Moscow's investigative committee said in a statement.
Immigration authorities told media the woman was from the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan and had been working in Moscow illegally.
The investigation is ongoing.

Reports in Russia claim the 39-year-old woman shouted 'Allahu Akbar' as she was held this morning.
The woman was seen carrying the head near Oktyabrskoye Pole metro station in the Russian capital this monrning.
She is said to have shouted "I'm a terrorist" while wandering the streets holding the head for around an hour before police arrested her.
Eye-witnesses claimed the woman was threatening to blow herself up at the scene but police said the woman had no explosives on her person.
The metro station was searched for explosives but given the all-clear by specialist officers a short time later.
In a statement the Russian Interior Ministry confirmed the woman, who has not been named, had brandished the severed head of a four-year-old girl before being arrested.
The girl's headless body was found at the scene of a fire in a block of flats near the metro station.
It is believed the woman was babysitting the child and waited for her parents to leave with their older child before the horror unfolded.
Eye-witness Alyona Kuratova told Russia's Rain TV: "I came out of the shopping center and they tried to not let me through. There were a bunch of people there, running, screaming 'bomb, bomb'.
"I saw that a woman was walking near the Oktyabrskoye Polye metro, near the road, all in black. She had not even some kind of bundle, but a head.
"Maybe it was a child's head, like they were whispering in the crowd. She was shouting something".
Video footage appeared to show the woman walking in the street, looking disorientated and carrying the child's head before her arrest.
Yulia Ivanova, an official spokesperson for Moscow's Interior Ministry, said: "(The suspect) had waited until the parents left with the older child, and for unknown reasons committed murder of the child, set the apartment on fire and left the scene of the crime."
The woman has since been charged with murder and is undergoing psychiatric testing.

Eye-witnesses claimed the woman was threatening to blow herself up at the scene but police said the woman had no explosives on her person. The metro station was searched for explosives but given the all-clear by specialist officers a short time later. In a statement the Russian Interior Ministry confirmed the woman, who has not been named, had brandished the severed head of a four-year-old girl before being arrested. The girl's headless body was found at the scene of a fire in a block of flats near the metro station. It is believed the woman was babysitting the child and waited for her parents to leave with their older child before the horror unfolded. Eye-witness Alyona Kuratova told Russia's Rain TV: "I came out of the shopping center and they tried to not let me through. There were a bunch of people there, running, screaming 'bomb, bomb'. "I saw that a woman was walking near the Oktyabrskoye Polye metro, near the road, all in black. She had not even some kind of bundle, but a head. "Maybe it was a child's head, like they were whispering in the crowd. She was shouting something". Video footage appeared to show the woman walking in the street, looking disorientated and carrying the child's head before her arrest. Yulia Ivanova, an official spokesperson for Moscow's Interior Ministry, said: "(The suspect) had waited until the parents left with the older child, and for unknown reasons committed murder of the child, set the apartment on fire and left the scene of the crime." MOSCOW — Russian police detained a woman in a hijab brandishing the severed head of a child outside a Moscow metro station on Monday and charged her with murder.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, Feb. 29, stirred fears of an Islamist terrorist attack and was caught on camera by passers-by.
The woman, identified by local media as Gyulchehra Bobokulova, 39, is believed to be the nanny of the victim and is suspected of killing the child before setting fire to its parents' apartment. The child has also been identified by local media as 4-year-old Nastya M.
Earlier in the day, reports emerged that police had found a child's headless body while extinguishing a fire at a Moscow apartment block.
After the murder, Bobokulova was seen outside Oktyabrskoye Pole metro station in northwest Moscow. According to Lifenews.ru, an online news portal with close contacts to the police, a policeman had first approached the woman to check her documents, and that was when the woman removed the child's head from a bag and began shouting that she had killed the infant and threatened to blow herself up.
The woman was also caught on camera shouting, "Allahu Akbar" (Arabic for "God is Great,") leading onlookers to believe they were witnessing an act of terror. She was said to have wandered the area for about an hour.
Footage of the incident showed a policeman wrestling the woman to the ground before a group of colleagues helped restrain her.
"Given the clearly deranged behavior of the detainee, investigators swiftly ordered her to undergo psychiatric tests to establish whether she is capable of understanding the significance of her actions," Moscow's investigative committee said in a statement.
Immigration authorities told media the woman was from the former Soviet republic of Uzbekistan and had been working in Moscow illegally.
The investigation is ongoing.

In a statement the Russian Interior Ministry confirmed the woman, who has not been named, had brandished the severed head of a four-year-old girl before being arrested.
The girl's headless body was found at the scene of a fire in a block of flats near the metro station.
It is believed the woman was babysitting the child and waited for her parents to leave with their older child before the horror unfolded.
Eye-witness Alyona Kuratova told Russia's Rain TV: "I came out of the shopping center and they tried to not let me through. There were a bunch of people there, running, screaming 'bomb, bomb'.
"I saw that a woman was walking near the Oktyabrskoye Polye metro, near the road, all in black. She had not even some kind of bundle, but a head.
"Maybe it was a child's head, like they were whispering in the crowd. She was shouting something".
Video footage appeared to show the woman walking in the street, looking disorientated and carrying the child's head before her arrest.
Yulia Ivanova, an official spokesperson for Moscow's Interior Ministry, said: "(The suspect) had waited until the parents left with the older child, and for unknown reasons committed murder of the child, set the apartment on fire and left the scene of the crime."
The woman has since been charged with murder and is undergoing psychiatric testing.
The girl's mother was taken to hospital after collapsing when she heard the news

According to LifeNews, the victim was a girl, identified as Nastya M. After the murder, the female suspect went to a metro station, where she was stopped by a local police officer. She immediately took the severed child’s head from her bag and started shouting that she had killed the child. The suspect is currently being detained by police authorities, Russian media reported.
“The end of the world is coming in a second…I’m your death,” the woman is heard shouting in the video released online. “I hate democracy. I’m a terrorist.”
She is heard shouting that she has been “cursed” and “destroyed” “so many times.”
“I'm your suicide bomber… I'm going to die in a second…The end of the world…,” she shouted.
The woman appeared near Oktyabrskoye Pole metro station in northwest Moscow.

A woman is being held in Moscow by officers after she brandishing a child's severed head outside a metro station.
Reports in Russia claim the 39-year-old woman shouted 'Allahu Akbar' as she was held this morning.
The woman was seen carrying the head near Oktyabrskoye Pole metro station in the Russian capital this monrning.
She is said to have shouted "I'm a terrorist" while wandering the streets holding the head for around an hour before police arrested her.
Eye-witnesses claimed the woman was threatening to blow herself up at the scene but police said the woman had no explosives on her person.
The metro station was searched for explosives but given the all-clear by specialist officers a short time later.
In a statement the Russian Interior Ministry confirmed the woman, who has not been named, had brandished the severed head of a four-year-old girl before being arrested.
The girl's headless body was found at the scene of a fire in a block of flats near the metro station.
It is believed the woman was babysitting the child and waited for her parents to leave with their older child before the horror unfolded.
Eye-witness Alyona Kuratova told Russia's Rain TV: "I came out of the shopping center and they tried to not let me through. There were a bunch of people there, running, screaming 'bomb, bomb'.
"I saw that a woman was walking near the Oktyabrskoye Polye metro, near the road, all in black. She had not even some kind of bundle, but a head.
"Maybe it was a child's head, like they were whispering in the crowd. She was shouting something".
Video footage appeared to show the woman walking in the street, looking disorientated and carrying the child's head before her arrest.
Yulia Ivanova, an official spokesperson for Moscow's Interior Ministry, said: "(The suspect) had waited until the parents left with the older child, and for unknown reasons committed murder of the child, set the apartment on fire and left the scene of the crime."
The woman has since been charged with murder and is undergoing psychiatric testing.
The girl's mother was taken to hospital after collapsing when she heard the news.

A piece of art hidden deep underground, marble, mosaic and sculptures and trains roaring past. With 180 stations and around seven million passengers on a typical week day Moscow Metro is one of the world's busiest and reputedly the most beautiful.
Opened during Stalin's rule in 1935 it displayed the best in Soviet architecture and was meant to impress.
Plans of its construction had been drawn up in Tsarist times, but the outbreak of the First World War and then the Revolution put them on hold. In the 1930s the Communist Party took the project close to heart, even asking the London underground for advice.
And from the outset the metro became the place of countless urban legends. Take the ring line. It wasn't in the original plan but...
It's believed that one group of engineers was reporting to Stalin on the construction progress, he put his coffee cup on the drawings, leaving a brown circle. Taking it as a sign of Stalin's genius, the engineers ordered the construction of the ring line. And indeed, it's always printed in brown on metro maps.
One of the oldest and most popular central stations is Ploshad Revolutsii or Revolution Square. Opened in 1938, it's lined with 76 figures of soldiers, workers and farmers who are said to come alive at night time. And touching the foot of this brown student is thought to cure a broken heart.
Meanwhile, real students believe that rubbing the noses of the borderguards' dogs is a guarantee of passing an exam. And everyone else does it to have good luck -- no wonder they are so well polished.
Another fine example of Stalinist architecture is Mayakovskaya, named after the poet of the Russian Revolution Vladimir Mayakovky. Look up to enjoy the ceiling mosaics depicting a bright day under the Soviet sky.
But if anyone tells you that the fine metal strips lining the stations columns were once intended for the frame of the world's biggest Soviet airship -- don't believe it, it's just another legend.
At 33 meters deep during World War II, Mayakovskaya served as air raid shelter. In 1941 it hosted a ceremony to mark the 24th anniversary of the Revolution with Stalin himself making a speech.
Several years ago the station had a new exit added inline with the celebrated Soviet era design, it's ceiling is decorated with a mosaic and some of Mayakovsky's poetry.
And here is perhaps the most ornate station Novoslobodskaya. Opened in 1952, it's decorated with marble from the Urals and stunning stained glass windows. One of the station's artworks caused much controversy though. The baby on this mosaic called Peace Throughout the World, used to look at none other than Stalin. But during the rule of Nikita Khrushchev and his de-Stalinization campaign Uncle Joe had to go.
Khrushchev was also apparently outraged by the barefoot woman. Don't we have enough shoes for everyone in the USSR? He was said to scream. So, he ordered to remove the mosaic altogether.
But the station architects saved it, covering the picture with a fake wall. Only after Khrushchev's fall from power in 1964 could it be restored. So, do take a ride here, you're sure to enjoy the views.

The most interesting stations of Moscow metro are: Kievskaya (blue line, west center - mosaics dedicated to the life of Ukrainian people), Komsomolskaya (circle line, north-east - mosaics on the ceiling), Mayakovskaya (green line, north - the winner of grand-prizes, decorated in a cool way), Ploshchad Revolutsii (blue line, center - sculptures of Russian workers, soldiers, and just normal people), Arbatskaya (blue line, center - just nice interior), Chkalovskaya (light green line, east center - one of the newly built stations, futuristic minimalistic design).
