Jennifer Serrano

Jennifer Serrano, better known as Jenny, is a Spanish singer.

She was born in Mieres, Asturias, Spain, and is a student of music under Helen Rowson in Barcelona. She is a new artist in both Spain and Andorra, with no previous commercial success in either country. Previously, she was a waitress. Jenny performed in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 for Andorra, singing the song "Sense Tu", written by Rafael Artesero. The song was competing in the semi-finals and for a place in the finals on 20 May, out of the 23 nations competing, Jenny finished last collecting just 8 points, all from Spain, thus not qualifying for the finals.

Jenny (doll)

Jenny (ジェニー, Jenī) is a 10½ inch fashion doll produced by Japanese toy company now known as Takara Tomy since 1982. The doll was known as Takara Barbie, and in 1986 the doll was renamed "Jenny" after Takara ended their licensing agreement with Mattel.Takara Barbie differs from a western Barbie. Takara Barbie was altered to better appeal to Japanese preferences, with a shorter height, large rounded manga-style eyes and a closed mouth. The doll's physical figure is more natural than the Western Barbie's exaggerated figure. Like her Western counterpart, Jenny wears a large variety of outfits, which often include street fashion, school uniforms, kimonos, and other uniquely Japanese costumes, such as "Bullet-Train Stewardess Jenny". Today the Jenny doll is a sentimental favorite doll in Japan, but she is much less popular than Licca-chan, Japan's market leader fashion doll.

Name

Prior to 1986, the doll was known as Takara Barbie. In 1986 Takara ended their licensing agreement with Mattel, and, as they owned the rights over the Takara Barbie's design, came up with a new name for the doll. The explanation given for the name change was that Jenny was the name of a character Barbie portrayed in a play, also titled Jenny. The play was a success and Barbie had become so associated with her character's name that she decided to change it to Jenny. Jenny's boyfriend was renamed from "Takara Ken" to "Jeff".

Gim (Korean pronunciation: [ɡiːm]; Korean: 김), also spelled as kim, is the Korean word for edible seaweed in the genus Porphyra. It is similar to nori, a Japanese word for this seaweed and used in the production of sushi in Japan, while it is used for gimbap in Korea. Porphyra is also called laver in English.

History

The earliest mention of gim is recorded in the Samguk Yusa (hangul:삼국유사, hanja:三國遺事) a document created during the Goryeo era documenting the history of the Three Kingdoms Period of Korean history covering 57 BCE to 668. The Samguk Yusa contains passages that record gim having been used as part of the dowry for Shilla royalty. It is conjectured, however, that gim of this period was harvested from rocks and driftwood rather than being cultivated.

From the mid-Joseon period there are records of gim in 15th century documents Gyeongsangdo Jiri Ji(hangul:경상도지리지, hanja: 慶尙道地理誌) and Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam (hangul:신증동국여지승람, hanja:新增東國輿地勝覽). Gim is recorded as a regional delicacy.

Kim is a male or female given name. It is also used as a diminutive or nickname for names such as Kimberly, Kimberley, Kimball, Kimiko, or Joakim.

A notable use of the name was the fictional street urchin Kimball O'Hara in Rudyard Kipling's book Kim. From the early 1900s till the 1960s the name Kim was used in English-speaking countries mostly for boys because of the popularity of this book. Another use of the name in literature is in the opening of Edna Ferber's 1926 novel Show Boat. Magnolia, the female protagonist, names her baby daughter Kim because she was born at the moment when the Cotton Blossom show boat was at the convergence on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers where the states of Kentucky, Illinois and Missouri join giving the acronym KIM. In the 1936 film version of the musical Show Boat, Magnolia's father claims to have invented the name based on the same acronym. Magnolia's mother comments, "Kim, that ain't no name." Despite the popularity of the novel and musical, girls were seldom given the name until the 1960s, but it has since become more common for them than for males.

Kim (1984 film)

Kim is a 1984 British television film directed by John Davies and based on Rudyard Kipling's novel Kim. The film stars Peter O'Toole, Bryan Brown, John Rhys-Davies, Nadira, Julian Glover, Jalal Agha, Raj Kapoor and Ravi Sheth in the title role.

Plot

Kim (Ravi Sheth) is a 13-year-old street orphan in Lahore of the 19th century (1894). Kim thinks he is native, but he's actually of British origin, the son of an Irish soldier and an unknown mother (unlike the novel on which it is based, Kim's mother is not portrayed as Irish, but it is made clear that Kim is white). Kim is hired as a guide by a travelling Tibetan lama (Peter O'Toole) on a search for a river where Budda hurled an arrow, turning it into a place of redemption. When he finds his father's regiment and the British military discover his origins and his real name, Kimball O'Hara, he's placed in an English college. His nature, however, is opposed to the regimentation expected for the son of a British soldier, and he rebels. His familiarity with Indian life and his ability to pass as an Indian child allows him to function as a spy for the British as they attempt to thwart revolution and invasion of India. Rejoining his holy man, Kim is trained by an Englishman called Babu (John Rhys Davies) to become a British spy and receives orders from a British Colonel (Julian Glover) who assigns him a risky mission in the Big Game, the behind-the-scenes struggle between Imperial Britain and Russia for supremacy in Afghanistan and Central Asia. He also befriends an astute Afghan horse-dealer named Mahbub Ali (Bryan Brown), a British Secret Service agent, who helps him with his task.
