Andrew Brion Hogan Goddard (born February 26, 1975), better known as Drew Goddard, is an American film and television screenwriter, director, and producer. He made his feature film directorial debut with the 2012 dark comedy horror-thriller The Cabin in the Woods. In 2015, he penned the film adaption of Andy Weir's book The Martian, for which he won the National Board of Review Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Goddard was born in Houston, Texas and was raised in Los Alamos, New Mexico, the son of Colleen Mary (Hogan), a teacher, and Dr. Laurence Woodbury Goddard. Goddard started his career as a staff writer for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, receiving a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation for the former. In 2005, he joined J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot team, where he wrote for both Alias and Lost, winning—along with the Lost writing staff—the Writers Guild of America (WGA) Award for Best Dramatic Series. In 2006, during its third season, Goddard became the co-executive producer of Lost.
With The Martian arriving on Digital HD next week and Blu-ray/DVD January 12th, I recently sat down with screenwriter Drew Goddard for an exclusive video interview. Since I spoke to him a few months back at the Toronto International Film Festival for the fantastic film, I decided to use my time to talk about the positive critical and audience reaction, what he’s working on now, Daredevil season 2, collaborating with Ridley Scott, and the behind-the-scenes of being a screenwriter in Hollywood – specifically how he broke into the industry, the moment he decided he wanted to be a screenwriter, fellow writers whom he admires, the best advice he ever received, how he trained for the job, the way he likes to work and more. Three years ago, we interviewed The Cabin in the Woods director/co-writer Drew Goddard and, during the course of the conversation, he discussed his passion for Daredevil comics. Cut to a few years later and Marvel enlisted Goddard to create, write, run, and direct its Daredevil TV series for Netflix. But before production began, Goddard was offered the chance to direct the Sinister Six movie for Sony, so he opted to vacate his Daredevil showrunner position so he could focus on getting the Spider-Man spinoff off the ground. Unfortunately, Sony Pictures scrapped Sinister Six in the wake of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but while Goddard isn’t returning to Daredevil as showrunner, it appears he’s still very much involved in the series. Steve recently sat down with Goddard at the Toronto Internat...

Drew Goddard entered this year’s Oscar race with a fascinating film. The Martian is a thrilling action/drama set in space, helmed by renowned director Ridley Scott. The set-pieces, ensemble cast and premise of the film would seem to spell a dark tale at first blush, or a peek into the potential missteps of interstellar colonization. Instead, or rather in addition to that, audiences received a film that was full of wonderment and humor. The feature film, starring Matt Damon as the best botanist on Mars, never misses a beat as it explores the things that can and will go wrong, and the ingenuity it takes to literally right the ship.
