The Good Witch of the South, commonly named Glinda, is a fictional character in the Land of Oz created by American author L. Frank Baum. She is the most powerful sorceress of Oz, ruler of the Quadling Country south of the Emerald City, and protector of Princess Ozma.
Baum's 1900 children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz refers to Glinda as the Good Witch of the South; she does not appear in the novel until late in its development. After the Wizard flies away in his balloon, the Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, Dorothy, and Toto travel south to the land of the Quadlings to ask Glinda for her advice. In the well-known film version, Glinda is a composite character with the Witch of the North. Later books call her a "Sorceress" rather than a "witch", though Baum's writings make clear that he did not view witches as inherently wicked or in league with the devil.
In the books, Glinda is depicted as a beautiful young woman with long, rich red hair and blue eyes, wearing a pure white dress. She is much older than her appearance would suggest, but "knows how to keep young in spite of the many years she has lived" - a fact that is established in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by the Soldier With Green Whiskers. She has ruled the Quadling Country ever since she overthrew the Wicked Witch of the South during the period when Ozma's grandfather was king of Oz.

Oz the Great and Powerful is a 2013 American fantasy adventure film directed by Sam Raimi, from a screenplay written by David Lindsay-Abaire and Mitchell Kapner with music by Danny Elfman. The film stars James Franco as the titular character, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams with Zach Braff, Bill Cobbs, Joey King, and Tony Cox in supporting roles. Based on L. Frank Baum's Oz novels and set 20 years before Dorothy Gale's arrival in the original novel,Oz the Great and Powerful is a spiritual prequel to the 1939 MGM film, The Wizard of Oz. The film tells the story of Oscar Diggs (Franco), a deceptive magician who arrives in the Land of Oz and encounters three witches: Theodora (Kunis), Evanora (Weisz), and Glinda (Williams). Oscar is then enlisted to restore order in Oz, while struggling to resolve conflicts with the witches and himself.
Kapner began developing an origin story for the Wizard of Oz after a lifelong interest of wanting to create one for the character. Walt Disney Pictures agreed to produce the film in 2009, with Joe Roth as producer and Grant Curtis, Joshua Donen, Philip Steuer, and Palak Patel serving as executive producers. Raimi was hired to direct the following year. After Robert Downey Jr. and Johnny Depp declined the role, Franco was cast in February 2011, with principal photography commencing five months later.

Michelle talks about playing Glinda the Good Witch, and Mila describes Emerald City. Sam also explains this Oz will not include Dorothy, Tin Man, Lion or Scarecrow because it's about how the Wizard (James Franco) came to being a great man.
