The Grind: Whaling in the Faroe Islands (Full Length)
There’s not much agriculture in the Faroe Islands, an archipelago in the North Atlantic, roughly equidistant from Norway, Iceland, and Scotland. Aside from the sheep that freely roam the fjords and a few root vegetables, the Faroese have always relied on the surrounding sea as a source of fish, seabirds, and the pilot whales they slaughter in a hunt known as the grindadráp, or grind.

Aside from the sheep that freely roam the fjords and a few root vegetables, the Faroese have always relied on the surrounding sea as a source of fish, seabirds, and the pilot whales they slaughter in a hunt known as the grindadráp, or grind.
"Grind,” which rhymes with wind, is Faroese for pilot whale, and can refer to the event of the whale slaughter, the whale meat, or the whales themselves. Hunting whales for food is a tradition as old as the islands have been inhabited. But in the past few decades, animal activists have taken issue with the grind, despite Faroese insistence that it is sustainable and humane.

Japan has long been accused of vote-buying and bribery at the International Whaling Commission. Already, through exploiting the loophole of ‘scientific research’, it has dramatically increased the number and species of whales it kills. Now, it wants to overturn the decades long ban on commercial whaling. Our offering this week uncovers just how it intends to do so. Made for ABC 4 Corners, it also reveals how the farcical rules of the IWC are open to manipulation and abuse.

Members of the anti-whaling conservation group Sea Shepherd have been making plans to stop a Japanese whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean. Sea Shepherd's campaign, called Operation Relentless, is the 10th successive year the group has tried to stop the Japanese whale hunt and will involve three ships, six speed boats, one helicopter and more than 100 crew from 24 nations. The campaign group will leave from Melbourne in search of the whale hunt after the fleet left Japan in early December. Among those supporting on the dockside was the father of deceased environmentalist and TV host Steve Irwin, after whom one of Sea Shepherd's ships is named. Sea Shepherd say the Japanese fleet is breaking Australian and international law by hunting in a whale sanctuary but Japan argues it has a right to monitor the whales' impact on its fishing industry. Report by Claire Mewse.

wn.com/Dramatic Whaling Footage Sea Shepherd Ships Plan To Halt Japanese Fleet
Subscribe to ITN News: http://goo.gl/zRYiYn

Where are the thousands of feet of film that Woodard took, on nitrocellulose film, at this time? This lost film is unique and of international importance.
To give continuity some seconds of the actors in 'I Conquer The Sea' have been included.
Woodard won an Oscar in 1935.

Japanese whalers went back to their centuries-old tradition of hunting whales on Thursday, carving a 30ft long whale for school children. Workers in a coastal town can be seen carving up one of the animals as a crowd of students stood round, with free samples of its fried meat handed out later. Children from two local elementary schools, on a field trip, watched as workers from a whaling company butchered the whale. The annual event took place in the town of Wada, south of Tokyo, a week into Japan's first coastal whaling season since a global court halted the country's better known Antarctic whaling in March. Though environmentalists condemn whaling, Japan maintains that it's an important part of its food heritage. The 30 foot long whale was the workers' 6th catch this season and they plan to catch 24 more before the whaling season ends in late August. Report by Claire Lomas.

British Instructional Films Ltd presents a Classroom Film.
Western Coast of Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, Saldana Bay (sp?). Views of a harbour. Shots of a whaling boat - the Steenberg. C/U of man sailing boat. C/U of his hands on the helm and of ship's compass. Shot of the harpoon on the back of the boat. Top shot of a man winding rope into a coil, there is a kitten in the middle. The "lookout" climbs up to the crows nest by a ladder. He climbs into a barrel and looks out to sea. He shouts down that he has spotted a whale - "Whale ho!". Captain steers boat into position. The "gunner" runs along the side of boat and aims the harpoon. C/U of him firing the harpoon. The rope is fed out by means of a winch. Shot of the whale being lashed to the side of the boat. C/U of whale's tail. Name on the back of the boat reads: Steenberg, Capetown.
Shot of the boat sailing back to harbour. The whale is dragged up on to slipway (it is big!). Shot of the winch which is hauling it. The whale is put beside other catches. The whale is measured with a tape. C/U of the Whale's mouth and its beleen (?). C/U of the whale's eye. Man sharpens large knife and several men cut up the whale. Blubber is cut and the winch pulls it away. The blubber is cut into smaller pieces. Blubber is fed down a chute. The rest of the carcass is pulled up the landing stage. More shots of men working on the blubber. Shot of vat where blubber is kept and storage tanks.

#Whaling could be the weirdest Internet trend ever.
This new, ridiculous trend is taking over social video site Vine with people posting short clips of themselves acting like, you guessed it, whales.
People across the world are, quite literally, bending over backwards to take part in the latest online craze, which involves hurling one's body back and to the ground, like a whale leaping in the sea.
Meme participants then post visual snippets of their endeavours on to video-sharing site Vine with the hashtag #whaling.
Rather than harpooning defenseless whales, the short clips labelled #whaling show people launching themselves backwards in an attempt to resemble a whale breaching in the ocean.
With regards to harpooning, there's some shocking info in the end of the video for your awareness.

"Australia's government stepped up its campaign against Japanese whaling by releasing graphic footage of a minke whale and its calf being harpooned and dragged aboard a ship. The images were taken by a customs ship that has been tracking the Japanese fleet in the Antarctic to gather evidence for a diplomatic and legal battle against whaling. Japan's whaling body accused Australia of spreading 'emotional propaganda', and denied the whales were a mother and calf."

The Chukchi, an indigenous population in Russia's far northeast, have hunted marine mammals for centuries. RTD travels to the largest ethnic settlement on the remote Chukotka peninsula to meet the whale hunters. They learn what it takes to land a big catch and why their job is crucial to the survival of their community.
