Since I have been talking of The Tribune, some people have asked me to suggest measures which will ensure that no one is able to take advantage of the organisation which prides itself as the Voice of the People and which was set up by a Will of the Founder, Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia. One of the things that can be done is to ensure that none of the Trustees holds any post that could possibly be in conflict with the day to day functioning of the newspaper - like the J&K; Governor today is. Further, they should be made to give an undertaking that they would not accept a post while they are Trustees that would be in conflict of any sort with the responsibility that they hold. It could be specified that no news report pertaining to any of the Trustees or an article by them would find space in the columns of the paper. And if there is an article in the paper, it should be accompanied by a disclaimer - of the writer being a Trustee. Since the paper is more than 125 years old, at least one of the Trustees could be a former employee of the paper - some one with an unblemished record and on whom there is unanimity. In addition, as a double check, there could be a Committee of Citizens which could act as an Ombudsman on what appears or does not appear in the paper. The Ombudsman's periodic report could be examined by the Trustees. This would ensure that an Editor does not usurp precious newspaper space to write on whatever he likes or ignores whatever he does not like. This would ensure that juvenile and personal writings by editors are not forced on readers. Readers were aghast to read Ground Zero articles like the one, Punjab Da Puttar in 2010 and Lessons Only a Mother Can Teach last year by the present incumbent, Raj Chengappa. The last was a tribute to his Mother and colleagues were even more incensed to see it as news of their own near and dear ones is not allowed to be published in the paper. When I took it up - that news of staff's near and dear ones should be used in paper like before, I was told that this was a Trust decision. But is there a different yardstick for the Editor? Are parents of the Editors any different from the lesser mortals, who literally give their blood for the organisation at the frequent and regular blood donation camps? Since in a sense The Tribune is a unique newspaper and perhaps the only one in this region which is run by a Trust, its Editors should be made to give an undertaking that they would not accept any of the sinecure posts during their service or after retirement for at least one year. There have been an occasions when editors have either been nominated to the Rajya Sabha or given Padma awards, which, as is well known, are rewards for one's support or opposition to the governments. How come such a requirement was not mandatory when the former Editor-in-Chief, HK Dua, was made a member of Rajya Sabha? Yes, at the level of the Editors and Trustees, perhaps no questions should be asked. But when the trust is undermined, some one has to ask the hard questions. Unfortunately, I have to do this. As they say, some one has to bell the cat. I am doing it as I started my career from The Tribune. These are the lessons that my first newspaper organisation, my alma mater of sorts, taught me. There is a certain rigour that is a must for Editors and Trustees and that is what ought to make The Tribune different from others - after all it is perhaps last of the bastions - a paper run by a Trust.

The untitled EP recorded in 2002 by the old school Emo band The Tribune. I included a bonus track, Kite demo version. The band is notable as it's the first teen project/band by Thomas Erak who later formed The Fall of Troy. The Tribune recorded the EP and existed at the same time as The 30 Years War (later renamed to The Fall of Troy). Pictures are from the 2002 April, Church gig (at the same gig The Tribune played sadly no pictures of the drummer), one of the pictures shows a really young Thomas Erak with his fist band Daydreamer, date when the picture was taken is unknown, and who the other 2 members were (maybe Mike and Jay, but not confirmed). 0. One and a half year ago, when the promoter of Day & Night News scaled down its operations as it was not allowed telecast on the cable network in Punjab and I was asked to send home most of the employees, I too had quit. The reason was simple: I could not have taken away the jobs of my colleagues and kept my own. However, the message had the desired impact. It was for the first time that journalists had spoken out against injustice in Punjab. This encouraged the journalists in ABP to speak out a few months ago when its operations were shut down in Punjab - for the same reason. I had joined The Tribune 15 months ago hoping that I would be able to make a perceptible difference to the newspaper from where I had started my career way back in 1978-79. I of course moved on to other publications soon after. I did make some difference in this very short period of the last one year. I managed to bring about some synergy between the Punjabi and English editions by ensuring that the Punjabi language reporters got their due place in the English counterpart. I also managed to guide a well-researched conflict of interest series on the Badal-Majithia and Kairon families into the paper despite odds. I also managed to take advantage of paper's old history to start a new and popular column - 100 years ago. I even managed to force some changes in the paper's web and online edition for good. But I had other plans - to make the paper relevant in today's world and age and to stop its slide in its core area. In the process and as I raised certain issues I hit a stumbling block. It is for this reason that I will not be a part of the paper. From tomorrow, I will be venturing out on my own - to be a part of you and raise your issues and concerns. To be more than just the voice of the Establishment. Obviously for this I will need your support. As Director, I am starting a new initiative - Free Media Initiative - to raise issues of the media and other areas that concern the people. Since the Punjabis abroad have been demanding that I show them the mirror image of things back home, I will be doing one or two shows on a Punjabi TV channel in North America - Global Punjab TV. But this is just the beginning. There is much more to come and all this with your support. Let us all - you and I - join hands to change things. I will be sharing all this information on the Facebook and Youtube.

How Trustees have hijacked Tribune Founder's will

Since the time I have left The Tribune two days ago, I have been flooded with calls, emails and messages on why I did so. Well the reason is simple. The Tribune newspaper was set up more than 100 years ago by a proud Punjabi, Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia. He made a Trust known as The Tribune Trust and wrote the first editorial explaining it all. He made a will about it wherein the whole concept is explained. Unfortunately, over the years, the Trust and the Founder's Will has been hijacked. It has been hijacked by some of its Editors, Editor-in-Chiefs and Trustees. Not all but some of them. And things have gone from bad to worse. In the last few years, the Trustees who are supposed to be custodians of the Founder's Will in letter and spirit have been using and misusing the organisation for their own benefits. Take the case of the J&K; Governor, NN Vohra. I have nothing personal against him but I am raising this point for the sake of the Organisation. His photos and news have been appearing in the paper blatantly daily and day after day. Agreed, it is the Editor or the Editor-in-Chief who would do it but then has the Governor tried to stop it? This is a joke in the Tribune newsroom. But no one dares to speak up. More photos and news of the J&K; Governor have appeared in The Tribune in the last two years than even the Prime Minister of the country. These days of course, there is the Governor's rule in J&K; but this has been happening even when there was an elected Government. More photos and news reports of the Governor would appear than even the elected CM. Why? Is it because he is the Trustee? For the first time in Tribune's history, the photo of the Founder, which usually appears on top of Page 1 on his anniversary, was used at the bottom of the page. Why? Here the more pertinent point is: should the Governor, who is a constitutional post but a paid employee of the Government of India, be a Tribune Trustee? Governor's often run into controversies and media writes on them. Has even a word appeared against Vohra in Tribune. You can look at today's Tribune. When I raised this point with the Editor-in-Chief, I was told that the J&K; Governor is different. How? I was told that The tribune has a strategic interest in J&K.; But where is all that mentioned in the Will of the Founder? And when I sought a meeting with Trustees to raise this and other issues, it was refused. Why? Clearly the Will and Trust of the Founder has been hijacked by some of these Trustees? Yes this was one reason for leaving The Tribune - so that I can raise this and other issues.
