Mayon Volcano (Tagalog: Bulkang Mayon, Central Bikol: Bulkan Mayon
), also known as Mount Mayon, is an active stratovolcano in the Philippine province of Albay, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Renowned as the "perfect cone" because of its almost symmetric conical shape, the mountain and its surrounding landscape was declared a national park on July 20, 1938, the first in the country. It was reclassified a Natural Park and renamed Mayon Volcano Natural Park in the year 2000.
Local folklore refers to the volcano being named after the legendary heroine Daragang Magayon (English: Beautiful Lady).
Mayon Volcano is the main landmark of Albay Province, Philippines, rising 2,462 metres (8,077 ft) from the shores of the Gulf of Albay about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) away. The volcano is geographically shared by the eight cities and municipalities of Legazpi, Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan, Ligao, Tabaco, Malilipot, and Santo Domingo (clockwise from Legazpi), which divide the cone like slices of a pie when viewed from above.
Philippines Vlog: We traveled to Legazpi to see Mayon Volcano. Flying into Legazpi, we were amazed at the beautiful landscape, thousands of coconut palms cover the surrounding hills of Bicol, the southernmost region of Luzon. In the distance, the almost perfect cone of Mayon Volcano appears, rising through the clouds, 8,081 ft (2,043 m) in elevation. Volcanic activity and tremors have been increasing during the past several weeks, prompting evacuations in the area. As the volcano simmers, the local news stations report; an eruption is imminent. Mayon is a perfect stratovolcano and one of the most famous active volcanos in the world. The symmetry of this geographical wonder is mesmerizing, I could sit silently and watch it for hours. We were very fortunate to have a few clear days to obs...
