These utopians had a problem with mainstream society, and their answer was to withdraw into their own little worlds. Others didn't like the society they saw, and decided to try to change it. Relatively new protestant denominations like the Methodists and Baptists reached out to "the unchurched" during the Second Great Awakening, and membership in evangelical sects of Christianity rose quickly. At the same time, Abolitionist societies were trying to free the slaves. Americans of the 19th century had looked at the world they were living in, and decided to change it. Street Life in London, published in 1876-7, consists of a series of articles by the radical journalist Adolphe Smith and the photographer John Thomson. The pieces are short but full of detail, based on interviews with a range of men and women who eked out a precarious and marginal existence working on the streets of London, including flower-sellers, chimney-sweeps, shoe-blacks, chair-caners, musicians, dustmen and locksmiths. The subject matter of Street Life was not new -- the second half of the 19th century saw an increasing interest in urban poverty and social conditions -- but the unique selling point of Street Life was a series of photographs 'taken from life' by Thomson. The authors felt at the time that the images lent authenticity to the text, and their book is now regarded as a key work in the history of documentary photography.

Respectable women had been seduced by the discourse around fashion and had lost their subtle purity and become brash and vulgar. In France, James Tissot painted a series of pictures entitled The Women of Paris, depicting fashionable women in a number of different locations and settings and in England the worrying habits of 'The Girl of the Period' became one of the most pressing issues for social columnists and correspondence in the press. This lecture will examine the representation of these new types of fashionable women and the social implications of the visual confusion of respectable and non-respectable women in the public spaces of Paris and London. So, while these women were working on prison reform, education reform, and abolition, they also started talking about equal rights, universal suffrage, temperance, and fair pay. Women like Susan B. Anthony, Carry Nation, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the Grimkés, and Lucretia Mott strove tirelessly to improve the lot of American women, and it worked, eventually. http://www.tomrichey.net At the beginning of the 19th century, Parliament was tightly controlled by wealthy landowners, many of whom represented "rotten boroughs" that were sparsely populated after workers flocked to cities during the Industrial Revolution. Election laws in place at the time only allowed about 8% of the adult male population to vote and even less to hold office due to property requirements. The landowners who controlled Parliament passed the Corn Laws in 1815, which placed a protective tariff on foreign wheat in order to keep prices artificially high (benefiting the landowning class). The urban middle class agitated for the vote and finally got it when the Reform Act of 1832 (also referred to as the Reform Bill of 1832) passed. The Reform Act of 1832 changed the property requirements so that someone didn't have to own land in order to vote, paving the way for twice as many people to vote. However, the working class still did not meet the new law's property requirements and were still not able to vote. After the Reform Act of 1832, the Chartists advocated for voting rights for all adult men over 21. In the next segment of this lecture, I will focus on the Chartist movement.

Check out the last man alive from the 19th century. Japan's Jiroemon Kimura is the last living man born in the 19th century, and, at 116 years old, the oldest man in the world. He was born on April 19th of 1897 and has lived to see 4 Japanese emperors and 61 prime ministers. Mr. Kimura credits his longevity to eating small meals. He also, through his own admission, spends a lot of time in bed. At present, he lives with the widows of his son and grandson, aged 83 and 59. Kimura, as mentioned, is the only man born in the 1800s still alive today, but there are about 20 women born before 1901 still kicking. Living past 100 is truly impressive, but in general women tend to live longer than men -- about 5 to 10 years longer, in fact. Of all people over the age of 100, about 85 percent of them are women. Science has discovered several beneficial biological factors women have over men. Lifestyle explanations for women outliving men run the gamut from having healthier habits to being less aggressive.
