His books include Tropic of Capricorn (published by BBC Books), and The New Jackals: Ramzi Yousef, Osama bin Laden and the future of terrorism, which warned of a new age of apocalyptic terrorism, and was the first in the world on bin Laden and al Qaeda. Silk Road IV: Central and West Asia (2007)
Episode 4 of 5 - From Wasteland to Motherland - Central Asia
From Kazakhstan, this episode cuts through the steppe regions of Central Asia to Russia and the Ukraine. We meet ethnic Kazakhs in China seeking to return to their homeland and displaced Chechens deciding whether to return to their war-torn homeland or stay where it is peaceful. And Cossacks, many of whom are now reviving their proud heritage of military service in Imperial Russia, asserting themselves as bastions of support for the Putin government. As we continue our journey through Central Asia, we listen to the songs and stories of these people who are longing to return to the homelands of their distant memories.
Launched in 1980, NHK's renowned Silk Road series was the first foreign TV program allowed to film Silk Road inside communist China. The series sparked enormous interest. A quarter of a century later, NHK re-visits Silk Road with high-definition cameras, and continues further through Central and West Asia.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's eight-day visit to five Central Asian countries and Russia has boosted India's multi-directional strategy. Modi's energetic diplomacy last week demonstrated that India can be the fourth seeker of influence there. The reason why Central Asians are eagerly letting India in is because of their widely perceived need for diversification away from the big two China and Russia. India would like to project that it is not replaying the harmful 'Great Game' but providing greater freedom to Central Asia, which treasures its independence. As a relatively declining power in Central Asia vis-a-vis ascendant China, Russia deems a growing Indian footprint there as desirable. During this marathon six-nation tour, Modi invoked India's heritage of moderate Islam and its complementarity with the Sovietised Islam of Central Asia. The real challenge for Indian diplomacy after the PM has done the spade work is to ensure that the SCO and BRICS, whose members issue communiques denouncing religious extremism, walk the talk.

(0:17) Bjørn Christian Tørrissen. An image of Xerxes' inscription at Van Citadel. Author's personal permission (Tørrissen's, not Xerxes'), with image credit in video. By the way, I don't necessarily endorse things that Xerxes did either, although I'd definitely rather meet him than Turkmenbashi.
(0:20) Image of fake, racist trope Xerxes modified from movie poster for 300: Rise of an Empire. I questioned using this in a video which is, essentially, telling people to not do what the 300 movies do... but I thought this particular use was funny. Fair use for commentary on false divides between East and West.

(0:00 - freaking everywhere in the video). Google Earth. Google requires that Earth imagery be accompanied always by the Google Earth logo and the sources of satellite imagery, and so I've always kept it, even when faded to the background. Speaking of Google Earth: borders. Sorry.
(0:07) Wikimedia:InvictaHOG - “Boy participating in horse race at Naadam in Mongolia” (Public domain, released by photographer)
(0:11) Flickr:David Stanley - “Golden Statue of Saparmurat Niyazov” (CC-BY 2.0). This statue image is not an endorsement of Turkmenbashi, or my unawareness of his brutality. Sometimes you just need a commercial-licensed image of a Turkmen standing up. As I say in the disclaimer, "Roots and Routes does not endorse depicted borders (or any borders), the deceased dictator of Turkmenistan (or any governments). Images of maps, presidents-for-life, and yurts are for illustrative purposes."
(0:13) Wikipedia:de:Bosinus - “Jurtencamp am Ufer des Yssykköl-Sees (Public domain)." Actually, yurts are fine.

Dr. Rhoads Murphey
Dr. Murphey is a worldwide known Ottoman Historian. Prof. Rhoads Murphey, for 22 years, has delivered lectures on Ottoman History at prominent universities of England. Mr. Murphey stated that at Chicago University, he has been the first student of the famous Prof. Halil İnalcık, who is known as the academic who introduced the Ottomans to the World. “I can say that I am coming from his ‘école’.
History of Central Asia
This course introduces students to the history of the nomadic cultures of the central Asian steppe, who acted as a conduit for both information, goods and technologies between Europe and China. Beginning with the archaeology and social anthropology of steppe nomadic societies, the course proceeds to an overview of the history of the various steppe peoples with whom Europe and Byzantium came into contact in the pre-Ghengizid age , before examining in greater detail the rise of the Mongol empire under Ghengiz Khan, its background and context, and its effects on the structure of tribal and clan society.

Sweaty, itchy beards. Pounding 45°C desert heat. Lung-implodingly high mountain passes. Cows in lime-green Ladas. More friendly kids than an extremely enthusiastic baseball coach could high-five in the busiest of baseball seasons, and so much more vodka than even the most serious Russian alcoholic could ever hope to consume. This film is the result of months of adventure whittled down to minutes of digital moving-image-magic for your armchair entertainment. Kick back with a nice cup of tea and enjoy some snippets of our bike ride through Central Asia.
Huge thanks to our friends for the fun and adventure along the way, and of course for the amazing footage! Good luck with the rest of your adventures!

Proto-Indo-European "marḱ-" ("horse"), possibly originated in the domestication of wild horses by the Proto-Turkic Botai culture of northern Kazakhstan (4th-6th millenium BCE):
"Antoine Meillet assumed that this word was an early loanword in Germanic and Celtic from an unknown source (Meillet 1926: 229). This idea was developed by T. Gamkrelidze and V. Ivanov, who had seen in it a borrowing from an Altaic language (or dialect). Indeed, Celto-Germanic *mark- has parallels with Altaic *morV- (Mong. mörin, Kalm. morin ‘horse’; cf. Russ. merin ‘old horse, gelding,’ a late borrowing from Mong., cf. also Chin. ma - *mra, Tamil mā). Gamkrelidze and Ivanov explain this borrowing by early contacts of IE tribes with Altaic tribes. ... this word was not transported to Europe by IE migratory tribes, but was adopted in Central Europe by IE speaking tribes (Celts and Germans) from some Asiatic people, speaking Altaic and practising horse-riding. We mean the Scythians (and Sarmats) who came from Central Asia in the seventh century B.C., crossed the Caucasus and appeared in northern Iran and Asia Minor. Scythians may not have been Indo-European, but a mixture of nations of Central Asia, including some Turkish and Altaic elements. Their language, though remaining Iranian, carried a lot of borrowed non-Indo-European features. ... At the same time, we have to note that if our idea of the Scythian origin of the word *marḱ- is right, we are then dealing only with indirect contacts, maybe via Galatians, because this word was well-rooted in Celtic before Romanization and before Scythian and Sarmatic tribes moved to Europe in the second to third century A.D."

"Mallory & Douglas (2006: 141) illustrates that for Indo-Europeanist the option of the Euroasiatic loanword is also well-known. Mikhailova (2007: 4-9) has recently proposed that Celtic mark-os ‘saddle horse’ could be actually of Scythian origin, this being in its own turn an “Altaic” borrowing (everything inserted in a rather naïve Nostratic framework). Unfortunately, the philological argumentation does not exist out of Celtic, ..."

"Beyond the certain Celtic and Germanic cognates it has been suggested that this putative PIE *márkos is related to a series of words for 'horse' that extend eastward, in non-IE languages, ... Thus we have Mongol morin, Chinese mā, Korean mal, Burmese mraŋ. Opinion is divided as to whether, if the PIE word belongs with the others, the PIE word is a borrowing from, say, pre-Mongol (which would also be the source of the Chinese word and that in turn the source of the Korean and Bumese) or the Mongol, Chinese, etc., words are ultimately borrowed from PIE. Under either borrowing scenario *márkos would have had to have been much more widespread in PIE than its Celtic and Germanic reflexes would suggest. ... it is difficult so see how one can match the western distribution of the IE cognates with the eastern distribution of its putatively non-IE borrowings or loans. The only major east to west movement of horses, after their initial domestication, was in the Iron Age where we have steppe horses which were introduced into the Carpathian basin by the Scythians."

"...by bringing the Altaic material into consideration, the original meaning of the Proto-Indo-European word for ‘horse’ becomes clear. It did not mean ‘the swift one’ but, rather, ‘the spirited, violent, fiery, or wild one’. This could not have been seen on the basis of the Indo-European evidence alone. Both the Proto-Altaic and the Proto-Indo-European forms are to be derived from a Proto-Nostratic root *ʔekh- ‘to move quickly, to rage; to be furious, raging, violent, spirited, fiery, wild’."

India and Central Asia, two regions bound by both history and geography, have enjoyed close social, cultural, religious, political and economic contact for centuries. Following the independence of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyztan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, India's relationship with the countries constituting the Central Asian Region is witnessing a new dynamism. This film brings out the vast opportunities that have emerged for fruitful, multifaceted ties between India and the Central Asian states. It also highlights the imperatives for deeper cooperation and positive engagement between the regions and the contribution that this can make to spreading peace and prosperity in the neighborhood.

El Niño is having a disastrous effect on countries in Central America, parts of Africa and Asia, which have been hit by a drought that is generating a severe food crisis.
In Haiti, 3.6 million people are facing food insecurity with farmers losing a significant part of the harvest.
Roger Bonifacio, a World Food Programme climate expert, says this has been caused by El Niño that started in 2015, but he says: "Its effects however will be felt all the way to early 2017 and its effects have been w…

This summer, I was traveling on my motorcycle from Germany to the Pamir Mountains and back to Moscow. I passed countries like Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Belarus. More than 15 000 kilometers in around 3 months. Most challenging and most beautiful part was the Pamir Highway M41, an old soviet highway, the second highest road in the world in Tajikistan. More than 400km riding above 4000m altitude and passing some untouched rough landscapes was one of a fascinating things I did.

Samarkand, alternatively Samarqand or Samarcand, is one of the oldest inhabited cities in Central Asia, prospering from its location on the Silk Road between China and the Mediterranean. At times Samarkand has been one of the greatest cities of Central Asia; traditionally it is the capital of Samarqand Region, and is Uzbekistan's third largest city, after fast-growing Namangan in the Ferghana Valley. The city is noted for being an Islamic centre for scholarly study. In the 14th century it became the capital of the empire of Timur (Tamerlane) and is the site of his mausoleum (the Gur-e Amir). The Bibi-Khanym Mosque remains one of the city's most notable landmarks. The Registan was the ancient center of the city. The city has carefully preserved the traditions of ancient crafts: embroidery, gold embroidery, silk weaving, engraving on copper, ceramics, carving and painting on wood.
There is evidence of human activity in the area of the city from the late paleolithic era, though there is no direct evidence of when exactly Samarkand was founded, some theories are that it was founded between the 8th and 7th centuries BC. By the time of the Achaemenid dynasty of Persia, it was the capital of the Sogdian satrapy. The city was taken by Alexander the Great in 329 BC, when it was known by its Greek name of Marakanda. The city was ruled by a succession of Iranian, Persian, and Turkish peoples until the Mongols under Genghis Khan conquered Samarkand in 1220.
In 2001, UNESCO added the city to its World Heritage List as Samarkand – Crossroads of Cultures.

Europe has key economic and security interests at stake in Central Asia, particularly in Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. What does China and Russia’s increasingly important partnerships with Central Asian countries mean for Europe’s interests in the region? Are American and European energy, security and geopolitical interests in the region aligned? Is there a case for Europe to step up its strategic dialogue with States such as India on security and energy? What happens in the post-2014 scenario in Afghanistan and how will this affect Europe’s presence in the region?
Dr. Stephen J. Blank is an internationally known expert on Russia and the former Soviet Union, who comes to American Foreign Policy Council from the US Army War College where he spent the last 24 years, 1989-2013 as a Professor of National Security Studies at the Strategic Studies Institute of the US Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, PA. Dr. Blank's expertise covers the entire Russian and post-Soviet region and has also written extensively on defense strategy, arms control, information warfare, energy issues, US foreign and defense policy, European, and Asian security.

In the Bible, the name of Scythians sounds as "Ashkuzi", which is a slight Semite distortion of the name of a Turkic tribe "As-kishi".
By the words of Herodotos (484-425 BC), Scythians thought that they were born in a deserted land from the first man called Targitaios, whose parents were a daughter of the river Dnieper (Borisphenes) and Scythian god of thunder corresponding to Greek Zeus. Targitaios had three sons: Lipoxaios, Arpaxaios and Kolaxaios. The first of them gave birth to Scythians Auchates, the second to Katiares, and the third to Parallates. Their common name was Scolotes. We can immediately see that all these names are definitely of the Turkic origin and can easily be explained on the basis of Karachai-Balkarian and other Turkic languages and dialects. The very word "Scolotes", evidently distorted by Ellines, sounded as "Skhilti" in the original language of Scythians, which refers to the upper strata of the society in Karachai-Balkarian.
The Turkic type of the Scythian-Sarmat language is testified by many names of Sarmat leaders mentioned by Roman historians Tacitus, Ammianus Marcellinus and others. The language of Scythians is known almost exclusively by the personal names, among which both Turkic and Iranian words are met. One cannot speak about Scythian language without an analysis of common nouns and special terms found in written sources, while the ancient authors keep complete silence on that. Nevertheless, the above-mentioned Turkic words, such as Targitaios, Kolaxaios, Lipoxaios, Arpaxaios, Skhilti and other speak that Scythians and Sarmats were Turkic tribes. Following Turkic examples could be added:
- Papai - the supreme god of Scythians, whose name means "elder" in Turkic languages.
- Api - Papai's wife; means "mother" in Turkic languages.
- Atei - Scythian king, whose name is a common Turkic word meaning "father".
- Eir - Scythian noun "man". Same meaning in Turkic: "eir", "er".
- Tagi - Scythian word "thread"; coincides with the same Turkic word.
- Jün - in Scythian and Turkic means "wool".
- Üshü, Ish - Scythian verb "feel cold". In Karachai-Balkarian and other Turkic languages with the same meaning: Üshü.
Even this short list of common words, ignored by many scythianologists before, the Turkic nature of Scythian language can be clearly seen.
Who were Kimmerians? It is easy to see that the word "Kam-er", or "Kim-er" is of typically Turkic origin, meaning "river man", just like the recent "Suv-ar", "Bulak-ar" ("Bolkar"), or earlier "Sub-ar", "Suv-ar" (which is the same as "Shum-er"). The alternation of the phonemes "sh" and "s" in many languages should not surprise anybody.
The Turkic elements in Sarmat culture and life is perfectly illustrated by the findings on Southern Bug, in the burials of I century. One of them was a little sculpture of a Sarmat sitting in the Asian manner, with crossed legs, in a quilted gown, with slanting eyes and flat nose.
The Scythian and Sarmat way of living and their culture manifests numerous Turkic elements. Scythian's breakfast and dinner were sour milk and cheese. These words coincide with the Karachai-Balkarian expression "Airan bla bishlak", describing their daily food. By the words of the I century author Plinius, Sarmats eat "raw flour mixed with mare milk".
THE HISTORY OF THE KARACHAI-BALKARIAN PEOPLE, by I. M. Miziyev, 1994, no. 1 (Jan-Feb), pp. 7-104, 206-213.
The scenario of Indo-European appropriation of Vedas and Aryans is mirrored in Indo-European appropriation of Scythians, Sarmatians, and other Türkic peoples, appropriation of Türkic Kurgan Culture, and appropriation of distinctly Türkic nomadism, abstract monotheism, military aptitude, and meat/dairy diet. Consequently, the mentioned in the ancient Chinese sources ethnonyms "Hu", "Di", "Guifang", "Tufang", "Rung", "Hun" and "Chile" were carriers of the Andronov cultures. From those Andronov communities in the 2nd millennium BC came the Arians. Hence, the Arians originated from the Türkic nomadic cattle husbandry tribes. The Scytho-Iranian theory, created and fanned by a coincidence of German racism and Russian national-imperialism, took hold and hardened in the Indo-European science to a status of axiom, any facts notwithstanding. It is outstanding that every link in the Iranian-Scythian theory is either a fraud or a blunder.

Central Asia is the core region of the Asian continent and stretches from the Caspian Sea in the west to China in the east and from Afghanistan in the south to Russia in the north. It is also sometimes referred to as Middle Asia, and, colloquially, "the 'stans" (as the six countries generally considered to be within the region all have names ending with the Persian suffix "-stan", meaning "land of") and is within the scope of the wider Eurasian continent. The region, along with Russia, is also part of 'the great pivot' as per the Heartland Theory of Halford Mackinder, which says that the power which controls the Central Asia –richly endowed with natural resources– shall ultimately be the Empire of the world.
In modern contexts, all definitions of Central Asia include these five republics of the former Soviet Union: Kazakhstan (pop. 17 million), Kyrgyzstan (5.7 million), Tajikistan (8.0 million), Turkmenistan (5.2 million), and Uzbekistan (30 million), for a total population about 66 million as of 2013-2014. Afghanistan (pop. 31.1 million) is also sometimes included.
Various definitions of its exact composition exist, and not one definition is universally accepted. Despite this uncertainty in defining borders, it does have some important overall characteristics. For one, Central Asia has historically been closely tied to its nomadic peoples and the Silk Road. As a result, it has acted as a crossroads for the movement of people, goods, and ideas between Europe, Western Asia, South Asia, and East Asia.
During pre-Islamic and early Islamic times, Central Asia was a predominantly Iranian region that included the sedentary Eastern Iranian – speaking Bactrians, Sogdians and Chorasmians, and the semi-nomadic Scythians and Parthians. The ancient sedentary population played an important role in the history of Central Asia. After expansion by Turkic peoples, Central Asia also became the homeland for many Turkic peoples, including the Kazakhs, Uzbeks, Turkmen, Kyrgyz, Uyghurs and other extinct Turkic nations. Central Asia is sometimes referred to as Turkestan.
Since the earliest of times, Central Asia has been a crossroads between different civilizations. The silk route which passed through Central Asia connected Muslim lands with the people of Europe, India, and China. This crossroads position has intensified the conflict between what Andrew Phillips and Paul James call continuing formations of tribalism and traditionalism and intensifying processes of modernization. They argue that:
In Central Asia the collision of modernity and tradition led all but the most deracinated of the intellectuals-clerics to seek salvation in reconstituted variants of traditional identities rather than succumb to the modern European idea of nationalism. The inability of the elites to form a united front, as demonstrated in the numerous declarations of autonomy by different authorities during the Russian civil war, paved the way for the Soviet re-conquest of Central Asia in the early 1920s.
From the mid 19th century, up to the end of the 20th century, most of Central Asia was part of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union, both being Slavic majority countries. As of 2011, the 5 "stans" are still home to about 7 million Russians and 500,000 Ukrainians.
