The Isra and Mi'raj (Arabic: الإسراء والمعراج, al-’Isrā’ wal-Mi‘rāj) are the two parts of a Night Journey (Arabic: Lailat al-Mi‘rāj, Persian: Shab-e-Me`raj, Turkish: Miraç Gecesi) that, according to Islamic tradition, the prophet of Islam, Muhammad took during a single night around the year 621. It has been described as both a physical and spiritual journey. A brief sketch of the story is in sura 17 Al-Isra of the Quran, and other details come from the Hadith, collections of the reports of the teachings, deeds and sayings of Muhammad. In the Isra part of the journey, Muhammad travels on the steed Buraq to "the farthest mosque" where he leads other prophets in prayer. He then ascends to heaven in the Mi'raj journey where he speaks to Allah, who gives Muhammad instructions to take back to the faithful regarding the details of prayer.
According to traditions, the journey is associated with the Lailat al Mi'raj, as one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar.
The Night Journey is a 1981 novel by Kathryn Lasky.
Nana Sashie tells her great-grandchild, Rachel, of her escape from Russia during the early 1900s, when pogroms were common. Nana Sashie refuses to eat for a week with the intention of dying, and passes away. Before moving to Minnesota, Nana Sashie was married to Reuven Bloom for 40 years.
Open Court Reading took the book and shortened it, giving Rachel the name "Rache". The story starts with a background of the story and the story from Ed's gift - a samovar - and Nana Sashie looking upset. When Rache sneaks into Nana Sashie's room to look at the samovar, she ends up hearing Nana's tale.

Enter my dreams and you will see what truly hides behind
my mask
Believe me I am bleeding from a thousand wounds
I often feel I'm banished
This world is not for me
For a long time I found out
How to communicate with stars
For they are my only companions
On the edge of an unknown existence I am staggering
Look into my eyes and you'll know what I'm yearning for
I celebrate the funeral of my emotions
Will this nightly joureny ever end?
My scars are deeper than you'd think
And even if I die now, my shadow will haunt you
