Shirley Marie O'Garra (stage name: Shirley Ellis; married name: Shirley Elliston; 19 January 1929 – 5 October 2005) was an American soul music singer and songwriter of West Indian origin. She is best known for her novelty hits "The Nitty Gritty" (1963) (US no. 8), "The Name Game" (1964) (US no. 3) and "The Clapping Song" (1965) (US no. 8 and UK no. 6). "The Clapping Song" sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
By 1954 she had written two songs which were recorded by The Chords. Ellis was originally in the group The Metronomes and she went on to marry the lead singer, Alphonso Elliston. All her solo hits were written by her and her manager, record producer, and songwriting partner, Lincoln Chase.
Ellis had recording contracts with the Kapp Records subsidiary Congress and later Columbia and Bell, but retired from the music industry in 1968.
Glen Augustus Holness (1957–24 June 1991), otherwise known by his stage name Nitty Gritty, was a popular Reggae singer. Born in the August Town section of Kingston, Jamaica, he was the second of eleven children born to religious parents.
Holness formed The Soulites in the early 1970s and recorded his first solo single in the early 1980s for producer Sugar Minott. He worked on the Zodiac sound system and recorded further singles, working with George Phang before moving on to King Jammy in 1985, with whom he had his breakthrough success with "Hog inna Minty", a Jamaican folk song. Nitty Gritty was the first to record the song and was an instant success. He enjoyed further successful singles produced by Jammy, and his debut album, Turbo Charged was released in 1986, as was the split album with King Kong, Musical Confrontation. He moved to live in London before relocating to New York City, where he continued to record but less frequently. Further albums followed with General Penitentiary (1987), Nitty Gritty (1988), and Jah in the Family (1989).
The Nitty Gritty is a restaurant with two locations in Wisconsin: one in Madison and one in Middleton. The Madison location was opened in October 1968, whilst the Middleton location was opened in September 2002.
The Nitty Gritty is a popular venue for residents of Madison and Middleton to celebrate their birthdays and is known by the local moniker, the "Official Birthday Place". The Nitty Gritty offers guests who are celebrating a birthday free soft drinks or beer (if of legal age to consume alcohol). Birthday guests are able to access free beverages, served in a memento mug, throughout the day. Similarly, birthday guests are offered a free mini-dessert sundae to accompany their meal.
The Nitty Gritty began to promote its Madison premises as "Madison's Official Birthday Place" on August 22, 1985. In 2009, readers of the Wisconsin State Journal voted as The Nitty Gritty as providing the best burger in Madison.
"The Clapping Song" is an American song, written by Lincoln Chase, originally arranged by Charles Callello and recorded by Shirley Ellis in 1965. The song was released shortly after Ellis had released "The Name Game". The lyrics of "The Clapping Song" were borrowed from the song "Little Rubber Dolly", a 1930s song recorded by the Light Crust Doughboys, and also feature instructions for a clapping game. The song sold over a million copies and peaked at #8(US) & #6 (UK).
The song returned to the charts in 1982, when the Belle Stars' version charted at number 11 in the U.K. This version did not chart in the U.S. though a version by Pia Zadora charted there at number 36 in 1983.
The song has been covered several times:

New York vocalist and composer Shirley Ellis was in the Metronomes before earning fame as co-composer and performer of some enjoyable soul novelty tunes in the mid-'60s. These included the Top Ten R&B; hits "The Nitty Gritty" and "The Name Game." "The Name Game" was co-written with her manager and husband Lincoln Chase, and peaked at number four R&B; and number three pop in 1965. She and Chase also collaborated on the follow-up, "The Clapping Song (Clap Pat Clap Slap)," which reached number 16 R&B;, but also represented the end of the creative line for the trend. Ellis landed one final moderately successful, more conventional soul tune two years later, "Soul Time." All except "Soul Time" were recorded for Congress; she had moved to Columbia by 1967, when "Soul Time" was issued. ~ Ron Wynn, Ro...
More fun : one of Shirley's catchiest hits. Never a prolific recording artist, she retired from the music industry in 1968. Her songs however, still get used in TV commercials fifty years later. Original video short here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8S3Yt-NxY0E (Matthew Enderlin)

I have re-uploaded this song for better sound quality. When the multi-talented Shirley Ellis left her home label (Congress Records) and jumped over to the giant Columbia in 1966, she had the insight to take with her her longtime manager and mentor, Lincoln Chase, and the great arranger Charles Callelo - who orchestrated "The Name Game", "The Puzzle Song", and a few other previous hits for this Bronx native. Shirley released some singles for Columbia, which were compiled in her album "Sugar, Let's Shing-A-Ling" (Columbia CL-2679/CS-9479). The title song - "Sugar, Let's Shing-A-Ling" was one of her best singles. Once again, Charles Callelo produced and arranged for Shirley Ellis. The "Nitty Gritty" gal cut some great sides for Columbia, and it was a shame she did not enjoy a longer tenure...
Here's Jackie Wilson (my grandfather) and Shirley Ellis (of The Name Game and The Nitty Gritty fame) singing a rockin' duet together "Gonna Mess Up A Good Thing (Don't Cha Be No Fool)." Included in this video is Dick and Dee Dee singing "Be My Baby." This is a rare footage of Jackie performing with a woman. Jackie is very playful with her, charming, charismatic, playing up to her, proving he could have chemistry with a partner.

From Shirley Ellis' albums "In Action" and "The Name Game". "Shy One" is a lovely ballad self-penned by Shirley and her mentor and manager Lincoln Chase. 3 6 9 the goose drank wine ... you know the clap song
I have re-uploaded this song in stereo for better sound quality. On December 30, 1965, Shirley Ellis recorded her last song on her home label, Congress Records. The underrated masterpiece she committed to wax that day is entitled "Ever See A Diver Kiss His Wife (While The Bubbles Bounce About Above The Water?)" On hand at the session, Shirley had her mainstay producer and manager Lincoln Chase, and her original arranger from "Nitty Gritty" days, Hutch Davie. Mr. Chase was the male voice singing with Shirley on the record (as he was on "Nitty Gritty" and many other songs). The record was released in January, 1966, and charted Pop on February 5, 1966 reaching only #135 - if you'll pardon the pun, "bubbling under" the chart! Shirley signed with Columbia Records in October of 1966, and rele...

If you want a time to soul
Baby, it's time to soul time
Say you want a time to soul
Baby, it's time to soul time
We can have a time that's fine
If your time is soul with mine
Then we sing from nine to soul
Baby, we'd be on soul time
Ready, get set, now
Two, four, six, eight, ten
Two, four, six, eight, twenty-two
Two, four, six, eight, ten
Two, four, six, eight, twenty-two
One more time now
Two, four, six, eight, ooh
I'm synchronized with you
(CHORUS)
It's the feeling that gets to you
It's the feeling that gets to me too
Then we can synchronize the soul
Baby, we'll be on soul time
Ready, get set, now
Two, four, six, eight, ten
Two, four, six, eight, twenty-two
Two, four, six, eight, ten
Two, four, six, eight, twenty-two
One more time now
Two, four, six, eight, ooh
I'm synchronized with you

Ready, get set, now
