The Islamic State now governs its caliphate from the north central Syrian city of Raqqa, which was once a relatively westernized agricultural hub. As the State's power base, Raqqa is where it imposes its version of Sharia law throughout large swaths of Iraq and Syria.
The “Hisbah” are the new Sharia police. In the latest episode of The Islamic State, VICE News joins them on their daily patrols during Ramadan, and witnesses how they check on shops and scrutinize produce, while at the same time ensuring their strict rules on women’s appearances are adhered to.
We are also taken to an Islamic State prison and speak with inmates accused of abusing drugs and selling alcohol. There we learn firsthand of the prisoners’ punishments, and how they have since “rediscovered” their devotion to the Islamic faith since their incarceration — but are yet to be granted permission to declare their allegiance to the caliph, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

After 26 years of rebel conflict and the legacy of a devastating tsunami, Islamic fundamentalism is the new force gripping the residents of Aceh. This report gets rare access to the sharia enforcers of Indonesia.
In a desperate bid to reduce government-rebel tensions, Islamic Sharia law was implemented in the Indonesian province of Aceh in 2001. Now, captain Ibrahim Latif is in control of a sharia police department that searches, raids and publicly shames anyone deemed to be flouting the Islamic code. "The caning doesn't hurt, but it does shame", he says of the public whippings carried out, mainly on single women who have acted non-conservatively. "The real Islamic punishment for sex between a married man and a married woman is to be buried in a road" he says, and Latif is hopeful that this 'eye for an eye' style of policing will discourage more serious problems, such as sexual assault. "She didn't ask them to do it, but she encouraged it because she was wearing super-sexy clothes", he explains of a recent case of gang rape. Under his jurisdiction, the rape victim will be caned for provoking the attack. Living in this climate has forced even devout Muslims to reconsider their freedom. "We can't be as free as we would like to be" says a woman who evades the police through an underground network. "I'm angry. What can I do?"

Sharia law (Arabic: شريعة šarīʿah, IPA: [ʃaˈriːʕa], "legislation"; sp. shariah, sharīʿah; also Islamic law, قانون إسلامي qānūn ʾIslāmī) is the moral code and religious law of Islam. Sharia deals with many topics addressed by secular law, including crime, politics and economics, as well as personal matters such as sexual intercourse, hygiene, diet, prayer, and fasting. Though interpretations of sharia vary between cultures, in its strictest definition it is considered the infallible law of God—as opposed to the human interpretation of the laws (fiqh).
There are two primary sources of Islamic law: the precepts set forth in the Quran, and the example set by the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the Sunnah. Where it has official status, sharia is interpreted by Islamic judges (qadis) with varying responsibilities for the religious leaders (imams). For questions not directly addressed in the primary sources, they extend the application of sharia through consensus of the religious scholars (ulama) thought to embody the consensus of the Muslim Community (ijma). Islamic jurisprudence will also sometimes incorporate analogies from the Quran and Sunnah through qiyas, though Shia jurists prefer reasoning ('aql) to analogy.

Christopher Eric Hitchens (13 April 1949 – 15 December 2011) was an English American author and journalist whose career spanned more than four decades. Hitchens, often referred to colloquially as "Hitch", was a columnist and literary critic for New Statesman, The Atlantic, The Nation, The Daily Mirror, The Times Literary Supplement and Vanity Fair. He was an author of twelve books and five collections of essays. As a staple of talk shows and lecture circuits, he was a prominent public intellectual, and his confrontational style of debate made him both a lauded and controversial figure.
Hitchens was known for his admiration of George Orwell, Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson, as well as for his excoriating critiques of various public figures including Mother Teresa, Bill Clinton, Henry Kissinger and Diana, Princess of Wales. Although he supported the Falklands War, his key split from the established political left began in 1989 after what he called the "tepid reaction" of the Western left to the Rushdie Affair. The September 11 attacks strengthened his internationalist embrace of an interventionist foreign policy, and his vociferous criticism of what he called "fascism with an Islamic face." His numerous editorials in support of the Iraq War caused some to label him a neoconservative, although Hitchens insisted he was not "a conservative of any kind", and his friend Ian McEwan describes him as representing the anti-totalitarian left.

This report gets rare access to the sharia enforcers of Indonesia. In a desperate bid to reduce government-rebel tensions, Islamic Sharia law was implemented in the Indonesian province of Aceh in 2001. Now, captain Ibrahim Latif is in control of a sharia police department that searches, raids and publicly shames anyone deemed to be flouting the Islamic code. "The caning doesn't hurt, but it does shame", he says of the public whippings carried out, mainly on single women who have acted non-conservatively. "The real Islamic punishment for sex between a married man and a married woman is to be buried in a road" he says, and Latif is hopeful that this 'eye for an eye' style of policing will discourage more serious problems, such as sexual assault. "She didn't ask them to do it, but she encouraged it because she was wearing super-sexy clothes", he explains of a recent case of gang rape. Under his jurisdiction, the rape victim will be caned for provoking the attack. Living in this climate has forced even devout Muslims to reconsider their freedom. The Islamic State now governs its caliphate from the north central Syrian city of Raqqa, which was once a relatively westernized agricultural hub. As the State's power base, Raqqa is where it imposes its version of Sharia law throughout large swaths of Iraq and Syria.
The “Hisbah” are the new Sharia police. In the latest episode of The Islamic State, VICE News joins them on their daily patrols during Ramadan, and witnesses how they check on shops and scrutinize produce, while at the same time ensuring their strict rules on women’s appearances are adhered to.
We are also taken to an Islamic State prison and speak with inmates accused of abusing drugs and selling alcohol. There we learn firsthand of the prisoners’ punishments, and how they have since “rediscovered” their devotion to the Islamic faith since their incarceration — but are yet to be granted permission to declare their allegiance to the caliph, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

After 26 years of rebel conflict and the legacy of a devastating tsunami, Islamic fundamentalism is the new force gripping the residents of Aceh. This report gets rare access to the sharia enforcers of Indonesia.
In a desperate bid to reduce government-rebel tensions, Islamic Sharia law was implemented in the Indonesian province of Aceh in 2001. Now, captain Ibrahim Latif is in control of a sharia police department that searches, raids and publicly shames anyone deemed to be flouting the Islamic code. "The caning doesn't hurt, but it does shame", he says of the public whippings carried out, mainly on single women who have acted non-conservatively. "The real Islamic punishment for sex between a married man and a married woman is to be buried in a road" he says, and Latif is hopeful that this 'eye for an eye' style of policing will discourage more serious problems, such as sexual assault. "She didn't ask them to do it, but she encouraged it because she was wearing super-sexy clothes", he explains of a recent case of gang rape. Under his jurisdiction, the rape victim will be caned for provoking the attack. Living in this climate has forced even devout Muslims to reconsider their freedom. "We can't be as free as we would like to be" says a woman who evades the police through an underground network. "I'm angry. What can I do?"

It's a place where the country's silenced youth can revolt against endemic corruption, social conventions and their strict families. But in the world's largest Islamic nation, political authorities and religious fundamentalists persecute this rebellious youth movement. Nowhere is the anti-punk sentiment stronger than in Aceh, Indonesia's only Sharia province, where 65 punks were arrested and detained at an Islamic moral training camp in which they had their heads shaved and clothes burnt. We travelled to North Sumatra to track down the last punks in Aceh, who still live under constant threat from the sharia police.

Indonesia's punk scene is one of the world's biggest and most vibrant. It's a place where the country's silenced youth can revolt against endemic corruption, social conventions and their strict families. But in the world's largest Islamic nation, political authorities and religious fundamentalists persecute this rebellious youth movement. Nowhere is the anti-punk sentiment stronger than in Aceh, Indonesia's only Sharia province, where 65 punks were arrested and detained at an Islamic moral training camp in which they had their heads shaved and clothes burnt. We travelled to North Sumatra to track down the last punks in Aceh, who still live under constant threat from the sharia police.
