A one-hour documentary film about urban growth and change in and around Phoenix, Arizona. In only half a century, Phoenix has expanded from a small desert town into the sixth-largest city in the country.
Through the eyes and voices of Phoenix residents, the film explores the interrelationships both caused by and affecting individual choices, the democratic process, and market forces in the region. Many factors contribute to this development pattern, which is providing homes and jobs to 100,000 new residents each year but is also threatening the region's unique desert environment.
The film seeks to educate and inspire citizens to engage in a better-informed civic dialogue about social equity, diversity, economic opportunity and environmental quality. Viewers learn more about the tensions between growth, economic development and quality of life in downtown areas, local neighborhoods and surrounding regions. While Phoenix is the case study in this film, the personal stories and narrations about the forces that shape current growth patterns are applicable to many other cities and regions across the country.
Released March 15th, 2003
I did not create this video, and I will gain ZERO monetary value from it.
It is a low resolution upload meant for educational purposes only.

In this show, viewers get a firsthand look at gang life in Phoenix.
The Hoover Criminal Gang's were once Crips, the word "Hoover" comes from a blvd of the same name that runs through certain areas in South Central Los Angeles. The Hoover Criminals came out of the Gangster Crip sets, but around 1979, the Gangster Crip sets began feuding with the Neighborhood Crip sets.... These rivalries are perhaps the oldest of Crip on Crip feuds that has lead to hundreds of these gangs to kill eachother since the feud began in 1979. This feud mainly consists between the Rollin 60's who are part of the Neighborhood Crip sets and the Eight Tray Hoover's. Around 1995 the Hoover Gangs decided to be a gang on its own because of their deadly feuds with many Crip sets. The Hoovers decided to keep the letter "C" but changed its meaning from "Crip" to "Criminal".
The Eight Tray Hoovers (ETG, 83 Hoover) hold the biggest gang turf in South Central, its gang turf is about five miles long. Other Hoover Gangs are the 74 Hoover (Seven Foe), Bay Bayz, Raskals, Everyday Hoover (ED Hoover), Hoover Crime Gang and others.
The Hoovers are so big that many other Hoover gangs do not know that they are no longer Crips in some parts of the world. The word Hoover has also been known to be spelled "Hoova", some Hoover sets in parts of the country say "Hoova Crip".... The Hoover Gangs are still considered to be part of the Gangster Crip sets, but they now feud with Crips, Bloods, Sur13. The Hoovers only unite with Piru sets in Prisons (they do this because the Piru sets are now a gang on its own as well and are no longer considered Blood gangs).... The Hoover gangs still keep close ties with the Hoover Crips that decided not to change to Hoover Criminals in 1995. The Hoover gangs also are on good terms with a few Crip sets in some areas of the World. What makes the Hoover gangs unique is that it also has Blood sets as well that are conisdered to be part of the Hoover Family.

Arizona, land of cowboys and Indians and Wild West towns plus, among its many natural wonders, the all pervasive colour red as displayed by the awe-inspiring rock formations of its mighty canyons.A thousand years ago the highly-cultured Anasazi and Hohokam Indians lived here, planting maize and vegetables in the meagre valleys and building walled towns into the cliffs of the canyons. They used the natural environment, protected caves in natural rock walls, which were accessible only by simple wooden ladders. For the past century, scientists from all over the world have investigated evidence that a gigantic meteorite crashed here, leaving behind it a huge crater: Meteor Crater. As the central and inner walls of the crater are similar to the landscape of the moon, preparation and training for the APOLLO space missions took place here. Located in North West Arizona is the 378 square kilometre National Park known as the ‘Petrified Forest’ with a surrounding desert which shimmers in all the colours of the rainbow. There’s the Agate Bridge, a huge fossilised tree trunk which spans twelve metres wide across a gorge and the amazingly beautiful Canyon De Chelly. Situated in the Navajo Indian Reservation, the Betatakin Ruins are the remains of historical dwellings which were carved into the rock by their original inhabitants from the 13th Century B.C. Wild West fans instantly recognise Monument Valley where, between colossal, 300 metre tall monoliths and sky-high rocky needles, John Wayne and countless other screen heroes fought off Indians and battled with ‘baddies’. A natural sculpture formed from undulating waves of stone, Antelope Canyon is a palette of colour which teases the eye. From the surface, a gaping crevice is the only means of access, tempting the curious to enter. In bold contrast, the Grand Canyon is 1,600 metres deep and 16 kilometres long, the most colossal gorge in the world. The sight of this gigantic natural wonder is the exciting climax of any trip to the magnificent and majestic land of Arizona.

In this travel video guide to Scottsdale, Arizona, I travel to Scottsdale, the so-called "Miami Beach" of Arizona. Located just to the east of Phoenix, Scottsdale is home to some of the city's best restaurants, bars, hotels and attractions.
I start of my travel in Scottsdale visiting downtown, otherwise known as "Old Town," the very walkable central part of the city full of small shops and a booming restaurant scene. It is also here that the city's roots can be traced back to the original farmers and settlers that called this otherwise barren part of the desert home back in the early 1900's.
I then head east into Tonto National Park to go kayaking down the Salt River with Arizona Outback Adventures (AOA), the area's premiere outdoor adventure company.
Next, I visit Taliesin West, the school/winter home of America's most famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. Here I explore the unique structures and landscapes that make up Wright's real-world laboratory for he and his students' architectural ideas.
Then I head back into nature with AOA to go hiking in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, a 30,000-acre preserve located just minutes from the city, and a perfect place to explore the unique landscape of the desert -- even when the temperature exceeds 100 degrees.
Last, I head inside and give a tour of my sweet pad at the Hotel Valley Ho, probably one of the coolest hotels I've ever stayed in. Harkening back to its Mid-Century roots, the hotel's unique architecture and swanky rooms makes it one of the premiere places to rest your head while staying in Scottsdale.

You would be hard pressed to find landscape better than that around Sedona, Arizona.
The West Fork Trail follows a tributary of Oak Creek through the Oak Creek Canyon in Sedona, Arizona. You can hike the entire canyon, but the West Fork Trail is a maintained portion for the first three miles. If you can manage it, try to get out here during the fall. You will see red, pink and gold leaves on the trees and along the path. The path gets very little sunlight, so during fall bring some warmer clothes.
At the start, you will see the ruins of a hotel built in 1926, and destroyed by a fire in 1980, called Mayhew's Lodge. The red rock canyon walls that rise straight above the creek provide an amazing backdrop of color to go along with the changing leaves. The rock you see is called Coconino sandstone, along with Kaibab limestone farther up. Different from the changing trees, you will see Ponderosa Pines that have an intoxicating smell, almost like vanilla.
Farther along the trail you can swim or relax in some of the natural pools. You can have a picnic on the flat rocks halfway down the trail as you enjoy the sound of the flowing water. Sometimes the water is so shallow along the rock, you can lay down on it while it flows. If you are feeling adventurous, continue on past the maintained trail through the canyon for another 14 miles.
You have to be prepared for even more water crossings and tougher terrain, but if you are up for it, it is worth it. West Fork Trail is a beautiful spot to visit in the fall or any other time of the year. It is a great place to relax and get away from the rest of the world. I am Carrie DeRudder, showing you Sedona.

Scottsdale (O'odham: Vaṣai S-vaṣonĭ; Yaqui: Eskatel) is a city in the eastern part of Maricopa County, Arizona, adjacent to the Greater Phoenix Area. Named Scottsdale in 1894 after founder Winfield Scott and incorporated in 1951 with a population of 2000, the 2014 population of the city is estimated to be 230,512, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.[4] The New York Times described downtown Scottsdale as "a desert version of Miami's South Beach" and as having "plenty of late night partying and a buzzing hotel scene".[5] Its slogan is "The West's Most Western Town".[6]
Scottsdale, 31 miles long and 11.4 miles wide at its widest point, shares boundaries with many other municipalities and entities. On the west, Scottsdale is bordered by Phoenix, Paradise Valley, and unincorporated Maricopa County land. Carefree is also located along the western boundary, as well as sharing Scottsdale's northern boundary with the Tonto National Forest. To the south Scottsdale is bordered by Tempe. The southern boundary is also occupied by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, which also extends along the Eastern boundary, which also borders Fountain Hills, the McDowell Mountain Regional Park and more unincorporated Maricopa County land.[7]

Grand Circle Vacation 2013: Las Vegas, Zion, Page Arizona, Grand Canyon North

We did this same circle 11 years ago and we wanted to take our five and a half year old son on this trip. For us a good starting point is Las Vegas and since we had a wedding to go to their it worked out great.
Las Vegas and Zion National Park are only about 2.5 hours apart. Part of the Grand Circle is Bryce Canyon but the Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim closed on October 16th so we cut our trip a little short.
Las Vegas to Zion:
Basically we took Interstate 15 from Las Vegas to HWY 9 into Zion National Park. It took about 2.5 hours.
Zion to Page Arizona:
From Zion we took HWY 9 which goes through the park and out the 1.5 mile long tunnel to the city of Kanab. From Kanab we took HWY 89 into Page Arizona. About 3 hours with a few scenic stops.
Page Arizona to Grand Canyon North Rim:
HWY 89 to Alt 89 was closed through Page when we went so we had to take HWY 89 all the way back to Kanab then we took Alt 89 (89A) to HWY 67 which takes you directly to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. About a 4 hour drive. Normally through Page on 89A it would take 2.5 hours.
The Monument Valley, Grand Canyon South and Grand Canyon West are all part of the Grand Circle but we didn't have the time to do the complete route.
It is quite a scenic drive and there is a lot to see in each place.
In Zion if the climate is right (Summer) you can walk the Narrows which we did the first time we were there. There is also a hike up to one of the peaks which we didn't do since it is dangerous (Angels Landing) where six people have fallen to their deaths. Zion is just a spectacular National Park.
In Page you have the Glen Canyon Dam which is impressive just by itself. There is enough cement in the Dam to pave a 4 lane highway from Page Arizona to Chicago Illinois. It took 17 years for Lake Powell to fill after it was completed and it is rated to last for another 300-500 years. American built and engineered.
Lake Powell is nice and I am sure in the Summer it is a great destination. In the Winter there wasn't much going on.
There is also Horseshoe Bend which is about 1 mile up the road on HWY 89 from Wal-Mart (I know, go figure). You will see a small sign and a turnoff. It is about ½ mile hike down to it. It is amazing. People come from all over the world just to see it.
Antelope Canyon is also a must see. It is right up HWY 98 just before the giant factory you will see a turnout to the right. This is where you pay and take a tour. You can also do a tour from companies in town. If you want to see the famous light beams you will need to go in July. But be warned it is pretty crowded at that time. When we went it was sparse at most.
We were at the Grand Canyon North 11 years ago but didn't stay at the Grand Canyon Lodge at the North Rim. We decided this time to spend the night. The food at the Lodge was okay and the little cabins turned out nicer than they looked. It is a great place to stay and a very private experience as the North Rim is not a popular destination. But I think the North Rim is the best of the four Rims.
Our trip was almost cancelled due to the US government shutdown. At the last minute the Governors of Utah & Arizona stepped in and used State funds to open the park - literally at the last minute for us since we had reservations Saturday and Zion was reopened Saturday morning.
Here are some contact info for you:
Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge:
http://grandcanyonforever.com/lodging/
In Page there are a few hotels, we stayed at the Days Inn - it was an OK hotel:
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g60834-Page_Arizona-Hotels.html
In Zion if you want to stay within a mile of the park entrance you need a hotel in Springdale UT. We stayed in the Best Western which was a great hotel with spectacular vistas and a free buffet breakfast.
http://www.utah.com/lodging/zion.htm
A note about the food on the trip:
We couldn't find a good restaurant anywhere on our trip. The food was average to bad. When the hotel breakfast buffet was the best meal of the trip (Best Western in Zion) you know your in trouble.
It is hard to get the grandeur of it all from the video and I suggest going yourself to each of these places. You won't be disappointed.

Scottsdale (O'odham: Vaṣai S-vaṣonĭ; Yaqui: Eskatel) is a city in the eastern part of Maricopa County, Arizona, adjacent to the Greater Phoenix Area. Named Scottsdale in 1894 after founder Winfield Scott and incorporated in 1951 with a population of 2000, the 2013 population of the city is estimated to be 226,918, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.[3] The New York Times described downtown Scottsdale as "a desert version of Miami's South Beach" and as having "plenty of late night partying and a buzzing hotel scene".[4] Its slogan is "The West's Most Western Town".[5]
The southern boundary is also occupied by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, which also extends along the Eastern boundary, which also borders Fountain Hills, the McDowell Mountain Regional Park and more unincorporated Maricopa County land.[6].More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottsdale,_Arizona

When the Mexican-American War ended in 1848, Mexico sold its northern zone to the United States and residents became U.S. citizens. The Phoenix area became part of the New Mexico Territory.
Phoenix is the sixth most populous city in the United States according to the 2010 United States Census, with a population of 1,445,632, making it the most populous state capital in the United States.
IN 1870 THE POPULATION WAS 240
The early economy of Phoenix was focused primarily on agriculture and natural resources, dependent mainly on the "5Cs" which were copper, cattle, climate, cotton and citrus.
With more than 62,000 hotel rooms in over 500 hotels and 40 resorts, greater Phoenix sees over 16 million visitors each year, the majority of whom are leisure (as opposed to business) travelers.

So much has changed in the Sonoran Desert in so little time, as recently as 100 years ago several of the dry washes were true rivers.Arizona boasts an impressive 30 or so native species of fish, unfortunately, most of the natives are disappearing with some of them virtually gone. Of Arizona’s native species, at least two-thirds are listed as Threatened or Endangered by state or United States federal agencies. A myriad of factors has resulted in their precarious position, including exotic competitors (and predators), irrigation diversion, dams, and overuse of available water by our burgeoning human population.
The Metro Population of Phoenix is 4,398,762
For more than 2,000 years, the Hohokam peoples occupied the land that would become Phoenix. The Hohokam created roughly 135 miles (217 km) of irrigation canals, making the desert land arable.
When the Mexican-American War ended in 1848, Mexico sold its northern zone to the United States and residents became U.S. citizens. The Phoenix area became part of the New Mexico Territory.
