It's a job that young kids dream of, injecting yourself into the middle of a pretty cool industry and getting paid to, essentially, play games all day. No wonder, then, that many game developers seek recognition. And what better outlet to attempt to earn that acknowledgment than by planting their own, unique signature messaging in the games, themselves. For the game developer, these hidden messages serve to leave a piece of themselves in the game, offer some personality and provide a special little bond with the gamer who is hardcore enough to uncover them. For the gamer, there is a level of satisfaction in going where few have ever gone before and unearthing a well-concealed secret within a game explored by so many. Easter eggs, as the hidden messages in video games are often known, can be a fun way to motivate players to continue exploring a game they've completed, or can serve as a platform for a developer to drop a subtle inside joke or offer an under-the-radar nod. They can be small and irreverent in nature, boasting little in the way of meaning but offering a quick shot of chuckle-worthy amusement. In other cases, they let the gamer in on a substantial, meaningful and coveted component of the game play experience, such as a mind-bending plot twist. Whatever the nugget of information may be, it can often be made extremely hard to find. So why do these hidden messages exist? Well, why not? Neither game developers nor game players need to take these games too seriously. After all, it’s not like those within this digitalized, console-based world are actually getting shot down and blown up. But just because these games aren’t to be taken too seriously isn’t to say that developers haven’t created nuanced, multi-layered games. Some hidden messages provide call backs to previous iterations of a gaming franchise or references to other games and/or levels within that same game. World of Warcraft, for example, featured a hidden level with a haunted castle that also served as a callback to its video game predecessor, a series simply known as Warcraft. These 10 hidden messages in popular, widely known video game series, some of which reach deeper than simply the world of gaming, carry a wide assortment of weight and significance. Some double as political statements, some can raise the hairs on the back of a gamer’s neck, some venture into controversial territory and some are just plain silly. We want to beat one more boss, ascend to one more level get one more step closer to a new high score. It is easy to get immersed in the sensory overload of fast-paced action and frequent rewards of video games, but these guys take it to a whole different level. The true extent of addictiveness found in video games can be best represented by these 10 bizarre cases of people who neglected basic human survival needs in order to keep on gaming – and paid the ultimate price. In these examples of an increasingly problematic trend of video games taking precedence over eating and sleeping for some, the obsession of gamers transports them into a pixelated reality wherein they give their avatar more attention and care than their own bodies. The consequences of these warped priorities can, as we will come to see in these particular situations, be dire. Simon Parkin, an award-winning English author and journalist, explored the issue of gaming-related deaths in depth in his 2015 novel, “Death by Video Game”. In the book, Parkin offers a hauntingly visceral description of a gaming death, writing, “He played the game to pass the time: ten hours of uninterrupted questing. Then, mind hazed by the room's thick cigarette smoke and eyes stinging from the monitor's flicks and throbs, he decided to step outside for some fresh air. Feng stood, took three steps then stumbled and collapsed, his mouth foaming." Indeed, video game deaths are neither new nor particularly rare. Documented cases have occurred all over the world and have existed as far back as 1982. It’s strange to think that reports of deaths via gaming are so widespread, given that you never hear about people dying by cinema, at the theater or while reading a book. Then again, how many movies, plays or books can keep you rapt and engrossed for hours on end? Despite the idle nature of the hobby, however, death from excessive video game play has become sufficiently commonplace to the point that Nintendo has even included a “Why not take a break?” interruption message in games for its Wii console. So how can people reach a point where they are actually gaming themselves to death? Maybe it stems from the fact that playing video games isn’t an idle act at all and is, in fact, active media. We become immersed in the continuing, developing saga that is the video game narrative. Sure, there’s a pause button available (on some games, anyway), but using it means killing momentum and releasing oneself from the complete absorption of the experience. In the cases of these 10 people, a gaming obsession didn’t spell the end for their avatar, but did lead to their own demise.
