The largest shark to have ever lived, the megalodon was possibly the greatest apex predator.
Despite becoming extinct over 2.6 million years ago, there is a large amount of evidence supporting amazing facts related to this prehistoric creature.
We are sure that you will be amazed at our top 10 facts on the megalodon.
10. Megalodons ruled the seas for ages
You may have thought that megalodons only existed for a short period in history, but It ruled the seas for over 25 million years! Compared to humans that’s 125 times longer than we have been around.
9. The megalodon is only known from teeth and vertebrae.
The skeleton of a megalodon, like all sharks was made of cartilage, and Cartilage rarely fossilises. All we have left of this
Apex predator are a few sourcer sized vertebrae and teeth, but these teeth have been enough to teach us about the megalodon.
8.
Megalodon teeth were abundant and enormous.
This prehistoric apex predator had teeth measuring up to half a foot. In total, Megalodon had 46 front row teeth, 24 in the upper jaw and 22 in the lower. Most sharks have at least six rows of teeth, so a Megalodon had about 276 teeth at any given time.
7. megalodon were not the only giant sharks.
Megalodon were big, no doubt about it, but there were other monster sharks swimming in the prehistoric oceans. Other megatoothed sharks such as
C. angustidens and C. chubutensis were almost as big as C. megalodon, and still much bigger than the largest recorded great white shark.
6. Magalodon teeth were thought to be dragon tongues.
For centuries, the teeth of megalodons and other giant sharks were called “tongue stones”, and were believed to be the tips of dragon’s tongues, which turned to stone as soon as they were cut off. They were thought to be a cure for various poisons, and were worn by nobility as good luck charms.
5.
Cold water killed the megalodon
Megalodons could not thrive in cold waters, which is why they avoided the polar seas, and preferred to give birth in warm waters. As the megalodons moved to warmer waters, the whales that they loved to eat moved to cooler waters, which made feeding harder for them.
4. Megaldons had a big bite.
It was so big, it could swallow a school bus. The largest fossil jaw constructed to date was made by
Vito Bertucci. It measured 11 feet or 3.
4 meters wide and 9 feet or 2.7 meters tall.

. Megalodons had the greatest biting force in history.
Scientists estimate it's bite force to be between 24,
000 to 41,000 pounds of force. That’s about ten times stronger than the bite of a great white shark! They could eat giant turtle shells like we eat pretzels.
2. Megalodons ate whales.
One of Megalodon’s favorite foods were huge whales - like sperm whales, bowheads, and humpbacks! It ate these giants by first biting off their fins. That way, their prey had no ability to escape and the megladon could eat it one bit at a time.
1. Megalodons were insanely big
We all know that. And it’s no secret it was estimated to be
50-70 feet or about 15-20 meters long. But consider this - scientists estimate they weighed about the same as 7 to 16 adult male elephants ( or 45 to 91 metric tons).
