The Nature of Things presents the world premiere of Polar Bears: A Summer Odyssey starring an adorable & curious ‘teenage’ polar bear from Western Hudson Bay. It is polar bears as you have never seen them before.Shot over twelve months, this blue chip wildlife documentary tells the story a young polar bear’s epic migration through the icy waters of Hudson Bay and his subsequent adventures on land, where he must spend the ice-free season. It is his first summer alone without his mother to guide and feed him. His struggle to survive is set against the biggest environmental story of our time: climate change. When we think of polar bears we think of snow and ice, but for thousands of years, the polar bears of Western Hudson Bay have spent their summers on land. As the ice melt they are forced to migrate over hundreds of kilometers using the stars. Their mothers teach them. It is a route that they will follow for the rest of their lives. As the ice-free season grows longer, so does the amount of time they must spend on land. With little or no food, hordes of biting insects, and intense pressure from other bears – it is unbearable!

Polar Bear Plunge at the San Diego Zoo was transformed into a winter wonderland early this morning, as nearly 26 tons of glistening white snow blanketed the polar bear exhibit. The three bears—Kalluk, Tatqiq and Chinook—showed their excitement by frolicking in the snow. They rolled around in the fresh powder and wrestled with each other all morning long. Animal care staff also scattered yams, carrots, melons and beef femur bones throughout the exhibit as added enrichment, and watched as the bears pounced and dug for their prizes.
This surprise snowy enrichment was made possible by donors who contributed to the animal care wish list on the San Diego Zoo website, sandiegozoo.org. Enrichment is very important for the bears, as it stimulates them, keeps them active and promotes natural behaviors.
“This was a special day for the polar bears, and I could tell they really loved it,” said Susan Purtell, senior keeper, San Diego Zoo. “It was great seeing them roll around in the snow, showcasing their natural behaviors.”

Some of those behaviors include sliding, digging and pouncing on the snow. Bears utilize these behaviors to help them break through ice to reach seal dens. All three bears were rescued at a young age, so they had to learn these behaviors without the help of their mothers. Kalluk and Tatqiq’s mom was shot and killed when they were young cubs, and Chinook’s mother was nowhere to be found when the young cub was discovered roaming around the streets of a city alone.
As a threatened species, polar bears face danger from poachers and habitat loss, mostly due to climate change.
Zoo guests can visit Kalluk, Tatqiq and Chinook at Polar Bear Plunge during the San Diego Zoo’s Jungle Bells celebration presented by California Coast Credit Union. During Jungle Bells, guests will be treated to twinkling holiday lights, merrymaking activities, live music performances and festive foods.

This is a short video documentary on the magnificent animal the polar bear, and its icy home the North Pole, which is tragically under threat from accelerated human disturbances.
I wish to point out that the footage of penguins in this video is false, as they do not inhabit the arctic shelf, only the Southern Hemisphere. The creator of this video may have added them for a more dramatic effect to the video, but either way their presence in the video is wrong as they only inhabit the Southern Hemisphere.
Polar bears are actually considered marine mammals by marine scientists, since they have characteristics and features that were adapted for them to have a marine lifestyle. Such as their ability to swim, and a layer of blubber which insulates them from the extreme sub freezing temperatures of the Arctic seas.
It is estimated there is around 21000- 28000 polar bears left in the wild, polar bears are a threatened species and are being considered for a place on the endangered species list.
Polar bears are almost entirely dependent on sea ice for their ability to survive, a decrease of sea ice in the arctic regions threaten the survival of the polar bear and will continue to, which puts them at risk at becoming endangered as a result of this.
Drastic changes to their icy home will change the polar bears behavioral patterns and decrease their numbers, a fact we have already witnessed with polar bear mothers giving birth to their cubs inside of snow dens on the land.
The polar bear is an incredible and very powerful animal which inhabits arctic coastlines, and its fate is very much dependent on the nations who control the land on which they live, such as Canada, The United States, Norway and Greenland.
It fills my heart with great sadness that this animal could be gone from us one day, which is why it is very important we keep pressure on these nations to help protect and conserve the polar bear and it's incredible world of ice for which it has been absolutely and perfectly designed for and which is essential for it's needs.
If you don't appreciate the natural world or consider it irrelevant, then you just simply haven't been there to experience just how awesome and unbelievable this thing is, and why it's so important we all band together to protect and conserve it for ourselves and the benefit of our future generations, and for the animals as well who are essential to the sustainably of life on this planet.
Our world is absolutely amazing and we can't lose these miracles of nature and their equally amazing natural environments. Do whatever you can, and help play a part in the conservation of these incredible arctic animals.

Grizzly man Mark Dumas, 60, is the only man in the world that can swim with a polar bear. The fearless polar bear handler from Abbotsford, British Columbia, regularly goes for dip in his swimming pool with 16-year-old female polar bear Agee, and the pair enjoy a watery cuddle together. Grizzly Man Mark and wife Dawn, 60, train the 60-stone (800lb) friendly polar bear - the world's largest land predator - to star in high-budget TV adverts. Agee has also performed in movies like 'Alaska' in 1995 when she was just a few weeks old. The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is a bear native largely within the Arctic Circle encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. It is the world's largest land carnivore and also the largest bear, together with the omnivorous Kodiak Bear, which is approximately the same size. A boar (adult male) weighs around 350–680 kg (770–1,500 lb), while a sow (adult female) is about half that size. Although it is closely related to the brown bear, it has evolved to occupy a narrower ecological niche, with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice, and open water, and for hunting the seals which make up most of its diet. Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their time at sea. Their scientific name means "maritime bear", and derives from this fact. Polar bears can hunt their preferred food of seals from the edge of sea ice, often living off fat reserves when no sea ice is present.
The polar bear is classified as a vulnerable species, with eight of the nineteen polar bear subpopulations in decline. For decades, large scale hunting raised international concern for the future of the species but populations rebounded after controls and quotas began to take effect.[citation needed] For thousands of years, the polar bear has been a key figure in the material, spiritual, and cultural life of Arctic indigenous peoples, and polar bears remain important in their cultures.

Polar Bear Plunge at the San Diego Zoo was transformed into a winter wonderland early this morning, as nearly 26 tons of glistening white snow blanketed the polar bear exhibit. The three bears—Kalluk, Tatqiq and Chinook—showed their excitement by frolicking in the snow. They rolled around in the fresh powder and wrestled with each other all morning long. Animal care staff also scattered yams, carrots, melons and beef femur bones throughout the exhibit as added enrichment, and watched as the bears pounced and dug for their prizes.
This surprise snowy enrichment was made possible by donors who contributed to the animal care wish list on the San Diego Zoo website, sandiegozoo.org. Enrichment is very important for the bears, as it stimulates them, keeps them active and promotes natural behaviors.
“This was a special day for the polar bears, and I could tell they really loved it,” said Susan Purtell, senior keeper, San Diego Zoo. “It was great seeing them roll around in the snow, showcasing their natural behaviors.”

Some of those behaviors include sliding, digging and pouncing on the snow. Bears utilize these behaviors to help them break through ice to reach seal dens. All three bears were rescued at a young age, so they had to learn these behaviors without the help of their mothers. Kalluk and Tatqiq’s mom was shot and killed when they were young cubs, and Chinook’s mother was nowhere to be found when the young cub was discovered roaming around the streets of a city alone.
As a threatened species, polar bears face danger from poachers and habitat loss, mostly due to climate change.
Zoo guests can visit Kalluk, Tatqiq and Chinook at Polar Bear Plunge during the San Diego Zoo’s Jungle Bells celebration presented by California Coast Credit Union. During Jungle Bells, guests will be treated to twinkling holiday lights, merrymaking activities, live music performances and festive foods.

This is a short video documentary on the magnificent animal the polar bear, and its icy home the North Pole, which is tragically under threat from accelerated human disturbances.
I wish to point out that the footage of penguins in this video is false, as they do not inhabit the arctic shelf, only the Southern Hemisphere. The creator of this video may have added them for a more dramatic effect to the video, but either way their presence in the video is wrong as they only inhabit the Southern Hemisphere.
Polar bears are actually considered marine mammals by marine scientists, since they have characteristics and features that were adapted for them to have a marine lifestyle. Such as their ability to swim, and a layer of blubber which insulates them from the extreme sub freezing temperatures of the Arctic seas.
It is estimated there is around 21000- 28000 polar bears left in the wild, polar bears are a threatened species and are being considered for a place on the endangered species list.
Polar bears are almost entirely dependent on sea ice for their ability to survive, a decrease of sea ice in the arctic regions threaten the survival of the polar bear and will continue to, which puts them at risk at becoming endangered as a result of this.
Drastic changes to their icy home will change the polar bears behavioral patterns and decrease their numbers, a fact we have already witnessed with polar bear mothers giving birth to their cubs inside of snow dens on the land.
The polar bear is an incredible and very powerful animal which inhabits arctic coastlines, and its fate is very much dependent on the nations who control the land on which they live, such as Canada, The United States, Norway and Greenland.
It fills my heart with great sadness that this animal could be gone from us one day, which is why it is very important we keep pressure on these nations to help protect and conserve the polar bear and it's incredible world of ice for which it has been absolutely and perfectly designed for and which is essential for it's needs.
If you don't appreciate the natural world or consider it irrelevant, then you just simply haven't been there to experience just how awesome and unbelievable this thing is, and why it's so important we all band together to protect and conserve it for ourselves and the benefit of our future generations, and for the animals as well who are essential to the sustainably of life on this planet.
Our world is absolutely amazing and we can't lose these miracles of nature and their equally amazing natural environments. Do whatever you can, and help play a part in the conservation of these incredible arctic animals.

I'm a skeptic. I know conservation orgs preach that we're going to lose polar bears if we don't get global climate change under control. But, what do we know with the polar bear. To really figure it out, we need to learn how the polar bear deals with life. That's why we made this video.

Participants spanned the globe, with 115 countries represented in the voting. The top five participating countries were the United States, France, Brazil, Canada and the United Kingdom for a total of 88,061 votes.
“We are thrilled and inspired that so many people around the world helped name this young polar bear,” said Tom Stalf, president and CEO of the Columbus Zoo. “We hope that those who have been watching Nora grow will continue to do so throughout her life, and remember that we all have a role to play in protecting wild polar bears for generations to come.”
Nora was born on Nov. 6 in the Polar Frontier region at the Columbus Zoo. Animal care team members had hoped that Aurora would be able to take care of the cub herself, but she eventually began leaving the fragile newborn alone for prolonged periods of time. Under the guidance of the Species Survival Plan, a program created by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Columbus Zoo decided to intervene and raise the cub by hand.
She has been growing up fast ever since. The cub, who weighed about one pound at birth, now weighs 18 pounds, and has recently been growing up to an inch a week. She has quickly gone from learning how to walk to running and galloping. Staff members have started to introduce her to water via a small tub, where she has been enjoying splashing around.
“While she does possess some of her infant qualities, she is starting to become independent and play with her new, big bear enrichment items,” said Shannon Morarity, assistant curator at the Columbus Zoo.
Polar bears are native to the circumpolar north including the United States (Alaska), Canada, Russia, Norway and Denmark (Greenland). They are at the top of the Arctic food chain and primarily eat seals. Polar bear populations are declining due to the disappearance of sea ice, and experts estimate that only 20,000-25,000 polar bears are left in the wild. Some scientists believe if the warming trend continues two-thirds of the polar bear population could disappear by the year 2050.
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is dedicated to conserving polar bear populations in the wild, and is recognized as an Arctic Ambassador by Polar Bears International.

The public has spoken! Following a worldwide online poll, the three-month-old polar bear cub born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium finally has a name: Nora!
The name was one of four options the Zoo put to a public vote between Jan. 19 and Feb. 3. Nora, a combination of the cub’s parents’ names, Nanuq and Aurora, garnered the most votes followed by; Kaya, meaning “little but wise”; Sakari, meaning “sweet”; and Desna, meaning “boss”. Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their time at sea. Their scientific name means "maritime bear", and derives from this fact. Polar bears hunt their preferred food of seals from the edge of sea ice, often living off fat reserves when no sea ice is present.
The polar bear is classified as a vulnerable species, with eight of the nineteen polar bear subpopulations in decline. For decades, large scale hunting raised international concern for the future of the species but populations rebounded after controls and quotas began to take effect. For thousands of years, the polar bear has been a key figure in the material, spiritual, and cultural life of Arctic indigenous peoples, and polar bears remain important in their cultures.

The transporter’s demand that the central Budget bear the PSO cost is in the wake of the finance ministry’s reluctance to foot the `40,000-crore bill from Indian Railways (IR) after the 7th Pay Commission awards ... Because of the various subsidises and concessions the transporter provides, IR had to bear an overall loss of `32,000 core in FY14 for running passenger operations....
