Michael Jackson

Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actor. Called the King of Pop, his contributions to music and dance, along with his publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades.

The eighth child of the Jackson family, he debuted on the professional music scene along with his elder brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon as a member of the Jackson 5 in 1964, and began his solo career in 1971. In the early 1980s, Jackson became a dominant figure in popular music. The music videos for his songs, including those of "Beat It", "Billie Jean", and "Thriller" from his 1982 album Thriller, were credited with breaking down racial barriers and with transforming the medium into an art form and promotional tool. The popularity of these videos helped to bring the then-relatively-new television channel MTV to fame. His 1987 album Bad spawned the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", "Bad", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Man in the Mirror", and "Dirty Diana", becoming the first album to have five number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. With videos such as "Black or White" and "Scream", he continued to innovate the medium throughout the 1990s, as well as forging a reputation as a touring solo artist. Through stage and video performances, Jackson popularized a number of complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk, to which he gave the name. His distinctive sound and style has influenced numerous artists of various music genres.

"We Are the World" was promoted with a music video, a video cassette, and several other items made available to the public, including books, posters, shirts and buttons.[All proceeds from the sale of official USA for Africa merchandise went directly to the famine relief fund. All of the merchandise sold well; the video cassette—entitled We Are the World: The Video Event—documented the making of the song, and became the ninth best-selling home video of 1985.[ All of the video elements were produced by Howard G. Malley and Craig B. Golin along with April Lee Grebb as the production supervisor. The music video showed the recording of "We Are the World", and drew criticism from some. Michael Jackson joked before filming, "People will know it's me as soon as they see the socks. Try taking footage of Bruce Springsteen's socks and see if anyone knows who they belong to."[24] Jackson was also criticized for filming and recording his solo piece privately, away from the other artists. The singer's supporters reasoned that Jackson was a perfectionist; recording in front of other big name artists would leave him awestruck and unable to perform at his best. He was also known for his shy nature, and the idea of singing solo in front of 44 other famous artists probably sounded terrifying to him. The song was also promoted with a special edition of the American magazine Life. The publication had been the only media outlet permitted inside A&M; Recording Studios on the night of January 28, 1985. All other press organizations were barred from reporting the events leading up to and during "We Are the World"'s recording. Life ran a cover story of the recording session in its April 1985 edition of the monthly magazine. Seven members of USA for Africa were pictured on the cover: Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and Willie Nelson. Inside the magazine were photographs of the "We Are the World" participants working and taking breaks. On the morning of April 5, 1985 (Good Friday of that year), "We Are the World" received worldwide coverage. At 10:25 am, over 8000 radio stations simultaneously broadcast the song around the world. They played it to show their support for the relief of famine in Ethiopia. The song was also broadcast by Muzak, a company which pipes background music into 110,000 stores and businesses in the US. It was the second time Muzak had played the sound of "human voice", the first being an announcement on the release of American hostages in Iran in 1981. As the song was broadcast, hundreds of people sang along on the steps of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York .[45][54] The simultaneous radio broadcast of "We Are the World" was repeated again the following Good Friday. "We Are the World" gained further promotion and coverage on May 25, 1986, when it was played during a major benefit event held throughout the US. Hands Across America—USA for Africa's follow-up project—was an event in which millions of people formed a human chain across the US.[57] The event was held to draw attention to hunger and homelessness in the United States. "We Are the World"'s co-writer, Michael Jackson, had wanted his song to be the official theme for the event. The other board members of USA for Africa outvoted the singer, and it was instead decided that a new song would be created and released for the event, titled "Hands Across America". When released, the new song did not achieve the level of success that "We Are the World" did, and the decision to use it as the official theme for the event led to Jackson—who co-owned the publishing rights to "We Are the World"—resigning from the board of directors of USA for Africa.

In 1807 Britain outlawed slavery. In 1820 the king of the African kingdom of Ashanti inquired why the Christians did not want to trade slaves with him anymore, since they worshipped the same god as the Muslims and the Muslims were continuing the trade like before. What these records show is that the modern slave trade flourished in the early middle ages, as early as 869, especially between Muslim traders and western African kingdoms. For moralists, the most important aspect of that trade should be that Muslims were selling goods to the African kingdoms and the African kingdoms were paying with their own people. In most instances, no violence was necessary to obtain those slaves. Contrary to legends and novels and Hollywood movies, the white traders did not need to savagely kill entire tribes in order to exact their tribute in slaves. All they needed to do is bring goods that appealed to the kings of those tribes. The kings would gladly sell their own subjects. (Of course, this neither condones the white traders who bought the slaves nor deny that many white traders still committed atrocities to maximize their business). This explains why slavery became "black". Ancient slavery, e.g. under the Roman empire, would not discriminate: slaves were both white and black (so were Emperors and Popes). In the middle ages, all European countries outlawed slavery (of course, Western powers retained countless "civilized" ways to enslave their citizens, but that's another story), whereas the African kingdoms happily continued in their trade. Therefore, only colored people could be slaves, and that is how the stereotype for African-American slavery was born. It was not based on an ancestral hatred of blacks by whites, but simply on the fact that blacks were the only ones selling slaves, and they were selling people of their own race. (To be precise, Christians were also selling Muslim slaves captured in war, and Muslims were selling Christian slaves captured in war, but neither the Christians of Europe nor the Muslims of Africa and the Middle East were selling their own people). Then the Muslim trade of African slaves declined rapidly when Arab domination was reduced by the emerging European powers. (Note: Arabs continued to capture and sell slaves, but mostly in the Mediterranean. In fact, Robert Davis estimates that 1.25 million European Christians were enslaved by the "Barbary States" of northern Africa. As late as 1801 the USA bombed Morocco, Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli precisely to stop that Arab slave trade of Christians. The rate of mortality of those Christian slaves in the Islamic world was roughly the same as the mortality rate in the Atlantic slave trade of the same period.) Christians took over in black Africa, though. The first ones were the Portuguese, who, applying an idea that originally developed in Italian seatrading cities, and often using Italian venture capital, started exploiting sub-Saharan slaves in the 1440s to support the economy of the sugar plantations (mainly for their own African colonies of Sao Tome and Madeira). The Dutch were the first, apparently, to import black slaves into North America, but black slaves had already been employed all over the world, including South and Central America. We tend to focus on what happened in North America because the United States would eventually fight a war over slavery (and it's in the U.S. that large sectors of the population would start condemning slavery, contrary to the indifference that Muslims and most Europeans showed for it). Even after Europeans began transporting black slaves to America, most trade was just that: "trade". In most instances, the Europeans did not need to use any force to get those slaves. The slaves were "sold" more or less legally by their (black) owners. Scholars estimate that about 12,000,000 Africans were sold by Africans to Europeans (most of them before 1776, when the USA wasn't yet born) and 17,000,000 were sold to Arabs. The legends of European mercenaries capturing free people in the jungle are mostly just that: legends. A few mercenaries certainly stormed peaceful tribes and committed terrible crimes, but that was not the norm. There was no need to risk their lives, so most of them didn't: they simply purchased people. As an African-American scholar (Nathan Huggins) has written, the "identity" of black Africans is largely a white invention: sub-Saharan Africans never felt like they were one people, they felt (and still feel) that they belonged to different tribes. The distinctions of tribe were far stronger than the distinctions of race.

(Though we have to admit, this is a trend that is changing) Piggybacking on the last point (and the one about public transport), if you do happen to want to go to a restaurant or a store you will absolutely, categorically need a car…unless you live in a big city. Portion sizes are beyond massive. Coupled with the car culture it is easy to see why obesity is more prevalent than in other parts of the world The government has much less say in your life than in other countries and there is far less regulation of food, health, family life, education etc. Guns! Yes, this is a prime example of the last point. It is insanely easy for you to purchase a gun. But no, most Americans have never been in or seen a gun battle. The country is safer than the news would suggest. Drive-throughs are everywhere. In fact, there are even drive through pharmacies! Once again, more convenience is offset by less health. The US is one of the only developed nations without public healthcare. Once again, this reflects the "no government" philosophy. Each person is seen as being responsible for making enough money to fund their health. Everything, including healthcare, is earned. Everything is big. Houses are big, food is big, stores are big, cars are big, the country is big. and more... If you visit the United States, you might just experience a little bit of culture shock, but that's not necessarily a bad thing is it? The United States’ “Pivot to Asia” is welcomed by most of the countries in the region, although the Malaysians and Pakistanis think it’s a bad thing because it could lead to conflict with China. 54% of Chinese think the U.S. is trying to prevent it from becoming as powerful. Here are the favorability ratings for America among the other countries in the study. As you can see, the U.S. is most popular in the Philippines, Ghana, it’s close allies South Korea and Israel, Kenya and the rest of Africa, along with Italy. The Europeans are strongly supportive, but not overwhelmingly so. While Russia has a very negative view of the United States, fueled by the non-stop anti-U.S. propaganda coming from Putin’s Kremlin. Zooming in, you see that the Russians turned sharply against America around the time Putin faced strong opposition at home, which is when he began building up America as an external threat. Globally, it’s fascinating how much more positively younger generations view the U.S. now that they are all on the Internet, a communication medium which has so far been dominated by the West. This could be behind the strong confidence most in the world have in the decision-making capabilities of one of the most Internet-savvy leaders in history, U.S. President Barack Obama. Now, these are the global favorability ratings of China. The Pakistanis may be China’s closest ally, sharing not only a productive relationship, but also a common cross border rival, in India. Africans are also overwhelmingly supportive thanks to the money -- and migrant workers -- the Chinese are pouring into the continent as its largest trading partner. The Russian’s love China partially because they too share a common rival: America, the current global superpower. The West’s views are all fairly consistent in their skeptical feelings toward the Chinese, although France and the UK have a more favorable view. Favorability views of China have changed in the past year thanks to actions like Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to India. Economically, the world increasingly thinks the U.S. is still the leader, and this data was gathered before China’s economic troubles this summer... But the world is also convinced that China has, or is on its way to, replacing the United States as the superpower. Of the 40 nations in this survey only Brazil, Uganda, close U.S. allies the Philippines and Japan, Vietnam, and the U.S. itself think China will never replace the U.S., although it’s remarkable how pessimistic even the Americans are. Generally, China is viewed very negatively on its respect for the personal freedoms of its people, although countries that also don’t have the greatest human rights records have a more favorable view of China on this issue because they don’t really understand what it’s like to be truly free of government oppression either, like the Russians, Africans, Middle Easterners, and Venezuelans in this survey. China’s global rating on this issue has actually taken a hit over the past year as pro-democracy protests that erupted in Hong Kong were forcefully put down. The Communist Party also doubled down on its Orwellian Internet censorship campaign, which we detailed in a previous video you can watch here and through the link below. Next is the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The largest trade deal in world history, that’s currently being spearheaded by the United States, is strongly supported by citizens in all countries involved. Obama’s main objective here is to strengthen America’s economic ties with China’s neighbors, as a countermeasure to the power of the Chinese economy.
