Like an adult version of a fun-house mirror, the Cloud Gate sculpture is one of Chicago's coolest tourist attractions.
The sculpture was completed in 2006 with a total construction cost of $23 Million. Affectionally known by Chicago locals as "the bean", the artist thinks that name is "stupid", and called it Cloud Gate because it acts as a type of gate that helps bridge the space between the sky and the viewer.
It's composed of 168 stainless steel plates welded together that are highlight polished and have no visible seams.
Some people say it was inspired by liquid mercury, I think it really was inspired my fun house mirrors :).

A world within a grain, an elemental depiction of
the life cycle of rice and man through dance
Following a glorious transplanting scene in Legacy (1978), and an abundance of golden grains in Songs of the Wanderers (1994), Lin Hwai-min marks Cloud Gate’s four decades as a choreographic beacon of innovation with a return to the theme of rice.
Lin, who is the first and only choreographer based outside Europe and the US to receive the Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement, reaches back into eastern culture and aesthetics this time. Dancers weave evocatively through eight cyclical stages involved in rice cultivation – “Soil”, “Wind”, “Pollen I”, “Pollen II”, “Sunlight”, “Grain”, “Fire” and “Water” – all set against sublimely beautiful videos captured over two years in Taiwan’s Chihshang rural township. To images of expansive fields of rice swaying in the wind, the sound of traditional Hakka folk songs and classical music, Cloud Gate dancers breathe astonishing life into a rippling, sensual, poignant epic that leaves no heart unstirred.

Cloud Gate, a public sculpture by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, is the centerpiece of the AT&T Plaza in Millennium Park within the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois, United States. The sculpture and AT&T Plaza are located on top of Park Grill, between the Chase Promenade and McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink. Constructed between 2004 and 2006, the sculpture is nicknamed "The Bean" because of its bean-like shape. Made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. It is 33 by 66 by 42 feet (10 by 20 by 13 m), and weighs 110 short tons (100 t; 98 long tons).
Said to have been inspired by liquid mercury, the sculpture's surface reflects and distorts the city's skyline. Visitors are able to walk around and under Cloud Gate's 12-foot (3.7 m) high arch. On the underside is the "omphalos" (Greek for "navel"), a concave chamber that warps and multiplies reflections. The sculpture builds upon many of Kapoor's artistic themes, and is popular with tourists as a photo-taking opportunity for its unique reflective properties.

After studying Chinese calligraphy masterpieces, choreographer Lin Hwai-min found that, despite the differences in styles, all the brush works share one common element: the focused energy with which the calligraphers "danced" during writing. He asked Cloud Gate Dance Theatre dancers to improvise by facing blown-up images of calligraphy and created Cursive. Although both works were inspired by the aesthetics of Chinese calligraphy, Cursive II is drastically different from its forerunner. Chinese believe there are five shades of black ink. While Cursive emphasizes the dark blackness with lots of vigorous attacks, Cursive II explores the lighter shades in a meditative mood, evoking the serene quality of porcelain from the Sung Dynasty. A dance performance work of delicate lyricism, Cursive II celebrates the elegance of calligraphy and the power of emptiness. A white floor and white backdrop create a stage that resembles a huge sheet of rice paper. As the dance unfolds, through lighting and slide projection, the colour on the backdrop gradually evolves from shining white to different shades of brown, just as ancient calligraphy scrolls aged over the centuries. Cursive II is a study of time. For the choice of soundscape, Lin Hwai-min has surprised many people by using John Cage's works. Simple and pure string music from the Western avant garde master -- himself also a student of Zen Buddhism -- engages in a beautiful dialogue with movements developed from Eastern age-old traditional body disciplines.

The sculpture was completed in 2006 with a total construction cost of $23 Million. Affectionally known by Chicago locals as "the bean", the artist thinks that name is "stupid", and called it Cloud Gate because it acts as a type of gate that helps bridge the space between the sky and the viewer.
It's composed of 168 stainless steel plates welded together that are highlight polished and have no visible seams.
Some people say it was inspired by liquid mercury, I think it really was inspired my fun house mirrors :).

To images of expansive fields of rice swaying in the wind, the sound of traditional Hakka folk songs and classical music, Cloud Gate dancers breathe astonishing life into a rippling, sensual, poignant epic that leaves no heart unstirred.

Cloud Gate, a public sculpture by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, is the centerpiece of the AT&T; Plaza in Millennium Park within the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois, United States. The sculpture and AT&T; Plaza are located on top of Park Grill, between the Chase Promenade and McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink. Constructed between 2004 and 2006, the sculpture is nicknamed "The Bean" because of its bean-like shape. Made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. It is 33 by 66 by 42 feet (10 by 20 by 13 m), and weighs 110 short tons (100 t; 98 long tons).
Said to have been inspired by liquid mercury,[1] the sculpture's surface reflects and distorts the city's skyline. Visitors are able to walk around and under Cloud Gate's 12-foot (3.7 m) high arch. On the underside is the "omphalos" (Greek for "navel"), a concave chamber that warps and multiplies reflections. The sculpture builds upon many of Kapoor's artistic themes, and is popular with tourists as a photo-taking opportunity for its unique reflective properties.
The sculpture was selected during a design competition. After Kapoor's design was chosen, numerous technological concerns regarding the design's construction and assembly arose, in addition to concerns regarding the sculpture's upkeep and maintenance. Various experts were consulted, some of whom believed the design could not be implemented. Eventually, a feasible method was found, but the sculpture's construction fell behind schedule. It was unveiled in an incomplete form during the Millennium Park grand opening celebration in 2004, before being concealed again while it was completed. Cloud Gate was formally dedicated on May 15, 2006, and has since gained considerable popularity, both domestically and internationally.

Golden rice grains on stage transform from a river to hills to a desert. Rice grains shower like a summer storm and waterfalls. Onto this landscape, dancers in ragged garb holding a tall staff, move slowly in a pilgrim journey. Inspired by the wealth of religious practices found throughout Asia, and Herman Hesse's account of Siddhartha's quest for enlightenment, Lin Hwai-min transforms ancient rites into resonant dance theatre. A visually stunning paean to spiritual pilgrimage, Songs of the Wanderers creates a world of intense reverence, distinctly Asian in its imagery yet with powerful relevance far beyond Asia. Spiritually evocative movements set to soulful Georgian folksongs are brought to life on a truly astonishing set.
