Emily Chang (Actress, Vampire Diaries), and Mike Song (Dancer/Choreographer) join our hosts to discuss why the very serious situation in Ferguson, Missouri matters to Asian Americans. We felt very deeply about this topic and were glad we found a way to address it to the ISAtv audience. Although we recognize the discussion deserves more time, (and maybe in the future we'll release full version), we hope that this brings a little perspective from some minds in the community.

ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — Esperanza High School officials are investigating allegations that fans hurled racial slurs at a Foothill basketball player during a Crestview League game Friday night.
CBS2’s Stacy Butler spoke to the player, guard Reed Nakakihara, who knows he stands out on the court, and not just because he averages about 16 points a game for the Santa Ana high school.
“I’m usually the guy that’s different on the team, that’s the shortestm that’s the only Asian,” Nakakihara said.
And more and more Nakakihara said he is paying a price. Rival fans are chanting racial slurs at him from the stands, including most recently from the student section at Friday night’s game.
“‘Jackie Chan,’ and ‘shrimp fried rice,’ or ‘chicken fried rice,’ something like that,” Nakakihara said. “I’d love to see the fans be able to chant things whatever they want, but they should refrain from when they get personal about race, maybe back off about that.”
Esperanza High School principal Ken Fox was not as accommodating.
In a statement, Fox said: “When I became aware of this issue I contacted the Foothill Principal, Dr. Stephany, to express my deepest apologies for this incident. These actions are not reflective of the values or standards of Esperanza High School.”
Nakakihara was unaware that the school is investigating the allegation.
“I appreciate that a lot,” he said.
But he is taking it in stride, noting that the Knights won Friday’s game 61-57.
“We were actually down 16 points and we came back and won by four,” he said. “So I think we had the last laugh that night.”
Butler reported that Esperanza is expected to decide what to do about the incident on Tuesday.

This is my final project for a history class on Asian American women.
I wanted to see the extent to which people, outside of an academic setting, considered stereotypes and its effects on people. Footage used was only snippets of the whole for time sake. I apologize for cutting a lot of content out! It was really hard since so many of you had such great points!
Songs used were from Tim be Told and Ascend the Hill.
I do not own the copyright to these songs. No copyright infringement intended.

I met Christine Chiang while living in Ubud, Bali last year. She has a new project called "Asian American Abroad" and sent over a list of questions to ask me. I could write a book explaining all the different factors and driving motivations behind the move, but have kept my answers short and to the point. I had a lot of fun answering the questions and it brought up some good memories for me. Hope you enjoy!
3:01 - Has anyone from home every reached out to you asking about your move? If so, what questions did they ask?
6:22 - Why did you move?
8:12 - What steps did you take to prepare (i.e. job hunting, setting up business, researching a country to live in, etc)?
10:15 - Do you have any regrets? Or anything you’d do differently?
11:27 - What did your family and friends think of your move? What questions did they have and how did you answer them?
17:03 - What opportunities do you think Asian Americans gain by moving abroad (to Asia or any other country)?
Shot at Wat Pha Lad, Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Soundtrack:
Quantic - Time Is The Enemy
DiamondSchwartz - All My Love
Fight Club quote
Outro idea from: The Hero In You - Motivational Video by Absolute Motivation (Love their channel!)

Korean Dominican? Chinese Cuban? Almost a half a million Asian Latinos now live in the U.S, according to the last census, mostly in NY, Texas, and California. Reporter Tinabeth Piña explores this ethnic mix that truly shows that you should never judge a book by its cover. (Taped: 08/14/15)

One of the top Supreme Court cases to watch this year is Abigail Fisher vs. The University of Texas, which raises the issue of affirmative action and does it keep qualified applicants from getting into elite schools based on race. Asian-American Contributions to the United States: Authors & Film Producers - Iris Chang (1999)

Asian Americans have been involved in the entertainment industry since the first half of the 19th century, when Chang and Eng Bunker (the original "Siamese Twins") became naturalized citizens. Acting roles in television, film, and theater were relatively few, and many available roles were for narrow, stereotypical characters. More recently, young Asian American comedians and film-makers have found an outlet on YouTube allowing them to gain a strong and loyal fanbase among their fellow Asian Americans.
When Asian Americans were largely excluded from labor markets in the 19th century, they started their own businesses. They have started convenience and grocery stores, professional offices such as medical and law practices, laundries, restaurants, beauty-related ventures, hi-tech companies, and many other kinds of enterprises, becoming very successful and influential in American society. They have dramatically expanded their involvement across the American economy. Asian Americans have been disproportionately successful in the hi-tech sectors of California's Silicon Valley, as evidenced by the Goldsea 100 Compilation of America's Most Successful Asian Entrepreneurs.[54]
Compared to their population base, Asian Americans today are well represented in the professional sector and tend to earn higher wages.[55] The Goldsea compilation of Notable Asian American Professionals show that many have come to occupy high positions at leading U.S. corporations, including a surprising number as Chief Marketing Officers.[56]
Asian Americans have made major contributions to the American economy. In 2012, Asian Americans own 1.5 million businesses, employ around 3 million people who earn an annual total payroll of around $80 billion.[50] Fashion designer and mogul Vera Wang, who is famous for designing dresses for high-profile celebrities, started a clothing company, named after herself, which now offers a broad range of luxury fashion products. An Wang founded Wang Laboratories in June 1951. Amar Bose founded the Bose Corporation in 1964. Charles Wang founded Computer Associates, later became its CEO and chairman. David Khym founded hip-hop fashion giant Southpole (clothing) in 1991. Jen-Hsun Huang co-founded the NVIDIA corporation in 1993. Jerry Yang co-founded Yahoo! Inc. in 1994 and became its CEO later. Andrea Jung serves as Chairman and CEO of Avon Products. Vinod Khosla was a founding CEO of Sun Microsystems and is a general partner of the prominent venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Steve Chen and Jawed Karim were co-creators of YouTube, and were beneficiaries of Google's $1.65 billion acquisition of that company in 2006. In addition to contributing greatly to other fields, Asian Americans have made considerable contributions in science and technology in the United States, in such prominent innovative R&D; regions as Silicon Valley and The Triangle.
Asian Americans have a high level of political incorporation in terms of their actual voting population. Since 1907, Asian Americans have been active at the national level and have had multiple officeholders at local, state and national levels. The highest ranked Asian American was Senator and President Pro Tempore Daniel Inouye, who died in office in 2012; by order of precedence the highest ranked Asian American in office is currently Secretary of Veteran Affairs Eric Shinseki.

The Transcontinental Railroad (AMAZING AMERICAN HISTORY DOCUMENTARY)
The remarkable story of greed, innovation and gritty determination to build a railroad connecting California to the East. Peopled by the ingenious entrepreneurs whose unscrupulous financing got the line laid, the brilliant engineers who charted the railroad's course and hurdled the geological obstacles in its way, the armies of workers who labored relentlessly on the enterprise, and the Native Americans whose lives were destroyed in its wake, The Transcontinental Railroad reveals both why the railroad was built and how it would shape the nation, while shedding light on the politics and culture of mid-19th century America.

Speaker: Gisela Jia
In New York City, as well as nationwide, an increasingly significant number of children speak a language other than English at home. Sound educational policies, speech/language interventions and parenting practices largely rely on our understanding of the processes through which Asian American children develop proficiency in both their home language and English. In this presentation, I will summarize research findings that 1) describe and explain these processes among Asian home language children, and 2) illuminate commonalities and differences between these children and those with Spanish or Russian as their home language. I will also discuss how research findings inform speech/language pathologists and educators working with this population, as well as parents in the Asian communities.

This documentary is part of my semester-long project at KM Global, titled Racially Asian, Ethnically American. In my project, I explored what it is like to grow up adopted, what effects institutional care has on an individual, and what it means to grow up Asian in America.
As part of my project, I created this documentary, aimed at adoptees and their parents. I here present selected portions of 6 interviews with Chinese adoptees living in America, and parents of adoptees. My hope is that adoptees and parents alike can watch this video to learn how others like them feel about issues relating to adoption and growing up Asian in America. I hope you enjoy watching the video, and if you have any questions, please let me know!

Host Ernabel Demillo takes a historical and behind-the-scenes look at a 9-man volleyball with documentary filmmaker Ursula Liang. The sport, initially played by Chinese immigrants to the US, has a wider reach today including a tournament played in major cities and Toronto.
There’s strong demand in the modeling business for Asian American children. No longer are they just in retail catalogues and a few print ads. Reporter Kyung Yoon finds that today’s kid models are gracing the pages of major fashion magazines as well as the runway, and earning anywhere from a few thousand dollars a day to a 5-digit salary.
Reporter Mike Gilliam sits down with former NBC News executive Paula Williams Madison, tracing her roots from the Caribbean to China, and retelling her story of what it means to be raised in Harlem by her Chinese Jamaican mother. Her journey takes her and 16 family members travel to two Chinese cities to visit their ancestral village, and follow their lineage back 3000 years.
When does music become a form of international diplomacy? Answer: when it involves Tennessee-born Korean American musician Elena Moon Park. Reporter Paul Lin jams with her on tracks from the folk/children’s album Rabbit Days & Dumplings, and learns how the US Department of State funds programs she coordinates.
Taped 7-15-15
Ernabel Demillo is the host of Asian American Life, a monthly half hour series about the fastest-growing immigrant group in the country, focusing on Asian Americans in the tri-state area from over 40 countries who speak more than 150 different languages and dialects. Every month, an Asian enclave and neighborhood within the tristate area is featured. Cutting edge issues like racial profiling and stereotyping are examined and explored. Successful Asian Americans who are forging new identities in business, politics and the arts are also be profiled. Asian American Life is reaching new frontiers in the quest for understanding and acknowledgment among tri-state Asian Americans.
