The controversial tradition at the heart of African culture has now reached the shores of Europe. Today, over 500 British girls are estimated to have undergone the procedure of female genital cutting.
Many young girls would get excited at the prospect of going on holiday but Jamelia knew that the plane she boarded was taking her to be 'circumcised'. Jamelia was cut in an empty mansion by an old woman, strangers held her down and a clean razor was only used when more money exchanged hands. "I remember the blood everywhere", Jamelia says, "one of the maids actually saw her pick up the bit of flesh they cut out." Miriam's womb was accidentally sealed when she was cut and now she cannot have children. "It will stay with me until the day I die." Now, the NHS confirms that cutters are flown over to the UK to cut girls in batches - a cheap alternative. The UK has more girls at risk of being cut than any other European country and as yet no-one has been prosecuted for the crime.

Where does FGM FGC happen
Female genital cutting has been documented in 28 African countries and in countries in the Middle East such as Yemen, Oman, Kuwait, Brunei and areas of Iraq and Iran.
FGC is also known to take place parts of Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. There is further anecdotal evidence for FGC taking place in a number of other countries where data has not yet been collected. In Africa there is limited evidence of FGC taking place in Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
FGC has also been reported in Singapore, the Maldives and the Philippines, while a type of FGC known as ’introcision’ was reported among the Embera-Chami tribe in Colombia, although the practice was declared to be abandoned in a ceremony in 2011. This particular form of FGC has also been reported in communities in Peru, Eastern Mexico and Brazil. The same report also talks of FGC among aboriginal tribes in Australia, but this has since been refuted.
FGC is also practiced among diaspora communities in Western countries (including parts of Europe, the USA and Australia).

VICE News reports on a little-known surgery that restores sexual function to the clitoris for women who had their genitals mutilated as children. We meet and follow a 32-year-old prospective patient who was mutilated at the age of six in Somalia, and who now lives and works as a nurse in the United States.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a cultural tradition that affects millions of women worldwide. Sometimes referred to as female circumcision or female genital cutting, the practice varies in severity depending on where it is performed. The procedure can range from minor nicks to the clitoris to the total removal of the clitoris and labia. In its severest form, the two sides of the vulva are sewn together, leaving only a small hole for menstruation and urination.
While the practice has been outlawed in many of the 29 countries where FGM is concentrated, it persists in some rural areas as a centuries-old cultural tradition, where it is usually performed by women elders as a part of a coming-of-age ritual. The tradition is sometimes believed to "purify" a woman and performed to preserve virginity before marriage.
The World Health Organization estimates that some 6,000 girls undergo FGM around the world every day. The procedure is often performed in unsafe and unsanitary conditions on girls between the ages of four and 12. FGM can be fatal, and can lead to immediate complications such as infections and urine retention, as well as long-term complications such as severe pain and tearing during intercourse and major complications during childbirth.
In this excerpt, VICE News saw the result of the severest form of FGM firsthand in Dr. Marci Bowers' operating room in San Mateo, California, and watched as she performed a defibulation procedure — the re-opening of genitalia that had been sewn shut — and clitoroplasty, the reconstruction and restoration of sexual function to the clitoris.

"Jaha Dukureh, who is leading the campaign to end female genital mutilation in the US, and the head of the joint UNFPA/UNICEF project to end FGM Nafissatou Diop, and Shelby Quast, senior policy advisor at Equality Now answered questions about FGM from 12-1pm ET on Tuesday 20 May.
"Jaha's petition on Change.org and backed by congressman Joe Crowley, UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon, and the Guardian has reached over 48,000 signatures. The petition is calling for a new study to find out just how many girls and women are affected by FGM in the US, as the first step to forming a national action plan to tackle the practice. The number of American women and girls affected or at risk is believed to have grown by 35% to at least 228,000 between 1997 and 2000.
"Jaha has said she is determined to keep fighting until FGM is recognised as a real risk for American girls and policies are put in place to protect them. 'I don't want to be poster child. I want every woman who has been through this to be able to speak out,' she says."*

Young Turk (n), 1. Young progressive or insurgent member of an institution, movement, or political party. 2. Young person who rebels against authority or societal expectations. (American Heritage Dictionary)
The Young Turks (Winner - Best Political Podcast & Best Political News Site of 2009) were the first original talk show on Sirius satellite radio and the first live, daily webcast on the internet. But that is not the revolution.
We are a rare show that combines all of the news that people care about in one place. We are not afraid to talk about politics and entertainment and sports and pop culture. But that is not the revolution either.
The real revolution is in daring to be honest with people. We don't patronize our viewers or lie to them. We have real conversations and deliver the news honestly.

Reversing Female Circumcision: The Cut That Heals

On the International Day for Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, VICE News reports on a little-known surgery that restores sexual function to the clitoris for women who had their genitals mutilated as children.
VICE News saw the result of the severest form of FGM first-hand in Dr. Marci Bowers' operating room in San Mateo, California, and watched as she performed a defibulation procedure — the re-opening of genitalia that had been sewn shut — and clitoroplasty, the reconstruction and restoration of sexual function to the clitoris.

One thousand cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) were reported in England between April and June - even though it is illegal to carry it out in the UK or to take someone abroad for the procedure. On Saturday, a new law comes in which means teachers and health or social workers must tell police if they FIND OR ARE TOLD someone under 18 has undergone FGM; until now, they only had A DUTY to tell social services. It is hoped this change will curb the practice and may lead to the first conviction for FGM in the UK. Reporter Catrin Nye met survivors and specialist doctors - her film contains graphic descriptions of FGM.

Learned this week that February 6th is the UN's International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, and thought I would lend my voice to the ongoing work to end #FGM.
"On Girls Who Will Not Become Women" is about what it might mean to escape FGM when others around you aren't, and takes on our "doing what we can" attitude, how around one important success story of escape stand so many who are not escaping, now. If there is a message it is that we can do more, friends, and we can do it better.
Between 2012-2013 I spent 70 days visiting and living with several rural Kenyan families. 'On Girls Who Will Not Become Women' appears in my new chapbook "Dagoretti Corner" wherein the first of my reflections of these rural Kenyan experiences are collected.
"Dagoretti Corner" is one of eight chapbooks by emerging poets from Africa and its diaspora selected for the 2016 New-Generation African Poets chapbook box-set, published by Akashic Books in association with the African Poetry Book Fund, forthcoming in April 2016.
The 2016 box-set also includes work by such talents as Safia Elhillo, Kayombo Chingonyi, Hope Wabuke, D.M. Aderibigbe, and Chielozona Eze, as well as an introduction by the esteemed editors, Kwame Dawes & Chris Abani.

Cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) are being reported at a rate of one every 96 minutes in England, according to the latest official health figures.
Data released on Friday shows that between October 2014 and September 2015, 5,484 cases of FGM were reported to authorities. Experts suggest the actual number of cases may be far higher.
London had the highest level of reported cases, with 758 flagged over the year. The Midlands and east of England came second with a combined 227 cases brought to the attention of authorities.
Female genital mutilation involves some or all of a girl’s exterior sexual organs, particularly the clitoris, being surgically removed or stitched up for non-medical purposes. At its most severe, FGM can make sex and urination painful and can lead to a host of other medical problems. It is mostly carried out in Africa and Asia for religious reasons, and is illegal in the UK.

Seventy-six percent of women in The Gambia undergo Female Genital Mutilation as children. Halimatou Ceesay, who was cut when she was nine, is making it her mission to end this brutal tradition in a generation.
"I was crying so much... I can still hear my crying today", Halimatou says as she describes her cutting. FGM is culturally ingrained in The Gambia, and the physical and mental damage inflicted on young girls is often ignored. "I am in tears when I see these girls, it is not fair", explains a nurse. In this report, Halimatou travels across the country, interviewing friends, health experts, a religious scholar and even her own cutter, determined to bring about change.
