Heavy clashes between Syrian troops and rebels trying to break a government siege in the suburbs of Damascus have killed at least 160 fighters over two days, activists said Sunday
The statement also said that 56 Syrian soldiers lost their lives in the fighting.
Forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad have laid siege for months to rebel strongholds in the Ghouta area east of Damascus, preventing food, clean water, medicine and other supplies from entering in a bid to crush resistance.
The tactic, which activists say has led to famine, has helped government troops capture a string of rebel-held areas over the past month on Damascus' doorstep.
The government push around the capital has coincided with gains by Assad's forces around the northern city of Aleppo as well as a new offensive in the rugged Qalamoun region north of Damascus.
The recent victories have shifted the momentum of the conflict in Assad's favor and given the Syrian leader greater leverage in proposed peace talks that the U.S. and Russia are trying to convene to end the civil war.
The intense fighting in the eastern Ghouta area began on Friday when several rebel groups attacked government forces, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and an activist based in Qalamoun.
He said more than 160 fighters were killed Friday and Saturday, including nearly 100 rebels, most of them from Al-Qaida-linked groups.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has defended his government's actions in the region since the uprising against his rule, which erupted in 2011.
In an exclusive interview with the BBC's Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen, Mr Assad denied that his forces had dropped barrel bombs indiscriminately on rebel-held areas, killing thousands of civilians, and dismissed as propaganda a statement by the UN that his government often blocks access to besieged areas for relief organisations.
The Syrian leader also denied that there was a direct dialogue with the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State but confirmed that "general messages" were sometimes passed via third parties.

Interviewed by Wolf Blitzer on CNN yesterday, U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard clearly explained how the U.S. fixation on overthrowing Syrian President Bashir al-Assad is putting us in direct conflict with Russia which has been an ally of Assad’s for 40 years. Tulsi asks: What is so important about overthrowing the Syrian government of Assad that justifies risking a nuclear war with Russia? Tulsi argues the U.S. must end its illegal war to overthrow the government of Assad and instead focus on defeating ISIS and other Islamic extremists who are waging war against the West. She cites recent history of Libya when the United States overthrew Gaddafi and now we have ISIS with headquarters in Libya, continuing to expand. The very same thing will happen in Syria if the United States is successful in its objective of overthrowing the Syrian government of Assad. ISIS will walk in the front door, take over all of Syria and pose that very direct and greater threat to the region and increase the humanitarian crisis there ten-fold.

Syrian government troops have broken through the terrorists' frontline defenses in Salma, taking control of several building blocks inside the city. The Russian Air Force has also conducted nearly a dozen airstrikes, pounding terrorists' positions in Latakia province. Earlier, Syrian forces killed dozens of al-Qaeda-linked militants in an offensive in Atshan and nearby villages in Hama province. Dozens more were either captured or fled the restive region. The city of Atshan and its outskirts have been cleared of terrorists in the last two days. Army forces also retook the village of Tal Sukayk in the same province. Meanwhile, similar operations are underway in the neighboring Idlib province. The attacks are backed by Russian airstrikes.

Destruction is everywhere here; this is the Khaldiyeh district in the central Syrian city of Homs. The Syrian army managed to retake this district after fierce fighting that went on for over a month.
This neighborhood was the main stronghold for foreign-backed insurgents in Homs, and their main operation room in the city.
These destroyed buildings hide a lot of secrets; more than seven-hundred hostages were said to have been kept by insurgents in Khaldiyeh but none of them was found yet. The advance in Khaldiyeh means that Syrian military units managed to split in half insurgent-controlled areas of Homs.
This achievement by the Syrian army can be compared to their taking control of the strategic town of Qusyar at least in its effect on the morale of the fighters on both sides. This mosque is the last point of Khaldiyeh and the first step in a new phase of life in Homs.
This is Khaled Mosque, which is the last point in Khaldiyeh and where the first phase of the military operation ended. The second phase will be in al-Warsheh neighborhood.

Russia is bombing rebel-held areas in Syria at a furious pace. That is giving the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, the upper hand. Meanwhile, critics accuse the United States of dithering.
The war, approaching its sixth year, may be reaching a turning point in Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and once its commercial capital. Government-aligned forces are trying to encircle its eastern half, controlled by rebels since 2012. If the government succeeds, it would be the greatest blow to the opposition in years.
But the battlefield is unpredictable. If the government regains full control of Aleppo, will the war begin to wind down, or will it escalate?
Backed by the Russian airstrikes, Syrian government forces and Iran-backed militias are trying to besiege the rebel-held section of Aleppo to starve the rebels into submission — the same method government forces used to recapture another major city, Homs. Using starvation as a weapon is a war crime, but it has been widely used in the Syrian war.
Government-aligned forces have also severed the main supply route to Turkey that delivered food, weapons and aid to rebel-held areas, leaving one remaining route.
The United Nations is warning that about 300,000 people in the rebel-held part of Aleppo could be at risk of starvation.
The Syrian government has also succeeded in turning humanitarian aid — food — into a negotiating chit. In talks to end the fighting among world powers on Thursday, allowing food deliveries was offered as a government concession.
According to an analysis by the Carter Center of the population centers each faction controls, the government has about 40 percent of the country, while the Kurdish groups, the Islamic State and other insurgent groups each hold about 20 percent.
The rebel groups that the West considers relatively moderate are strongest around Aleppo. But they are intertwined in places with the Nusra Front, which is linked to Al Qaeda and which the United States and Russia both consider a terrorist group. The deal reached in Munich, for a “cessation of hostilities,” leading to a cease-fire, excludes the Nusra Front and Islamic State.
The rest of Aleppo Province is a patchwork of zones of control. Kurds have the area around Afrin in the northwest, Islamic State holds the east, the government and its allies have advanced in the south, and other insurgent groups hold the west.

Russia is concerned about Turkey’s shelling of the Syrian territories, calling it inadmissible.
The spokesman of the Kremlin says Moscow believes that the artillery shelling of Syrian positions by Turkish forces will lead to further tensions on Turkey-Syria border. The Russian authorities added that Moscow will continue supporting Syrian government forces in their battle against terrorists. On Thursday, Russia warned that Turkey’s shelling of northern Syria could be taken to the UN Security Council.

CHICAGO - The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan continued his efforts to warn the president, the country's leaders and the public by urging Congress to reject pressure to launch military strikes against Syria after disputed charges of chemical weapons use by the Syrian government against civilians. The letter was to be sent to U.S. lawmakers today. In addition, a special message about the Syria crisis and its potentially catastrophic impact on America, the Middle East and the world is airing at http://www.noi.org/SyriaWar/. It is part of the Minister's weekly 52-week lecture series "The Time and What Must Be Done," which runs Saturdays at 6 p.m. Central.
"I am deeply concerned that a larger war will materialize and America will be forced to put American soldiers in harm's way to accomplish their desired results. What is the real purpose of this intervention? What do we plan to do in the event the regime falls and the leadership in Syria falls into the hands of those who are not necessarily friends of America and another civil war takes places over who will be the political power in Syria. If Russia and others intervene a possible wider conflict could engulf the entire Middle East," said Min. Farrakhan on Sept. 6.
"I am pleading with you on behalf of a war weary American people and the suffering peoples of the World; and the needs of the American people will be further delayed in being satisfied, which will produce negative results on the inside of America creating the same kind of backlash and vitriol as we saw when the American people revolted against the war in Vietnam," he warned.
The special message online includes extensive information about the danger of potential conflict with Syria, reasons why America should tread carefully, questions about the validity of insistence the sarin attack was carried out by Syrian government forces, and the dire consequences of another U.S. War.

The offensive on Jisr al-Shughur was launched to cut off the government access to a major highway linking Idlib to Latakia. Several smaller towns in the vicinity where also captured by rebels in order of the battle.
The Jisr al-Shughur offensive has been described as one of the "largest and most ambitious operations of the Syrian civil war" consisting of some 40 opposition groups, with the main goal being to outflank and interdict government troops who were sent to attempt to push back against the 2015 Idlib offensive, which followed the opposition victory at the Second Battle of Idlib.
Free Syrian Army brigades were tasked with spearheading the cutting of Syrian Arab Army supply lines from the west, as well as carrying out secondary attacks against SAA positions across Idlib.
Opposition forces were widely reported to be planning to move on the government's stronghold of Latakia following the capture of Jisr al-Shughur.
After recent rebel victories against the Syrian government, some people began to fear a scenario where (hardline) rebels would swarm Damascus in the near future, despite government reassurances.
The offensive was a joint operation of Free Syrian Army brigades and also hardline rebel groups under the banner of the Army of Conquest on the one side and the Syrian army supported by Hezbollah and the NDF on the other side.
The footage shows mostly fighting from the rebel perspective but however a small amount of SAA footage is also featured in this video.

Syria War 2015 - Idlib Offensive: Heavy Clashes During The Battle For Jisr al-Shughur. Syrian rebels contiuned their push against government troops in the Idlib and Hama region after they captured the strategic town of Idlib a few weeks ago. Their new offensive aimed to capture the city of Jisr al-Shughur in the Idlib governorote. The fighting for the town was part of the so called "Battle of Victory" that took place in the Idlib and Hama Governorates. In order of the fighting Jisr al-Shughur was captured by the rebels. The Russian military intervention in the Syrian Civil War began on 30 September 2015, following a formal request by the Syrian government for military help against rebel and jihadist groups.[81][82] The activities consisted of air strikes primarily in north-western Syria against militant groups opposed to the Syrian government, including al-Nusra Front (al-Qaeda in the Levant), the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and the Army of Conquest.[83][84][85] The Russian Air Force had significant ground support from the Syrian military, Iranian Revolutionary Guards, and allied militias.[86] Prior to these operations, Russian involvement in the Syrian Civil War had mainly consisted of supplying the Syrian Army.[87] Russian officials have acknowledged their objective is to help the Syrian government retake territory from various opposition groups, including ISIL, but also groups backed and armed by the United States.[88] In his televised interview broadcast on 11 October 2015, Russian president Vladimir Putin said the military operation had been thoroughly prepared in advance; he defined Russia′s goal in Syria as "stabilising the legitimate power in Syria and creating the conditions for political compromise".[89]

Three years ago, an uprising against the Assad regime turned into what looked like a straightforward civil war between Syrian government forces and rebels. However, over time, what had started as a largely secular opposition movement began to take on more of a radical Islamist tone, with two al Qaeda offshoots -- the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and Jabhat al-Nusra -- becoming the dominant forces on the ground across the rebel-held North.
One VICE filmmaker managed to secure unprecedented access to both al-Qaeda factions battling Syria's government forces, despite the risk of journalists being kidnapped. This is a remarkable portrait of the foreign volunteers and local Syrians willing to fight and die to establish a new caliphate on Europe's doorstep.

The Battle of Aleppo is an ongoing military confrontation in Aleppo, Syria between the Free Syrian Army, Islamic Front, People's Defence Units and Sunni militants against the Syrian government, Hezbollah and Shiite militants. The battle began on 19 July 2012 as a part of the Syrian Civil War. The battle's scale and importance led combatants to name it the "mother of battles". The battle has been highly noted for the Syrian army's indiscriminate use of barrel bombs dropped from helicopters, killing thousands. Hundreds of thousands have been forced to evacuate. On the other hand, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights denounced the Free Syrian Army for the indiscriminate bombardment of government-held districts, with gas cylinders filled with explosives, which resulted in hundreds of casualties. The battle has also caused catastrophic destruction to the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Syrian Civil War 2014 - Heavy Fighting As Free Syrian Army Launches Suprise Attack In Darayya |Syria War. Syrian Rebels from the Shuhada Al-Islam Brigade launched an attack on government held positions in the southern area of Darayya.
Their goal is to advance towards Damascus, and to break the siege on Darayya.
The rebels claim that they managed to clean several positions from regime presence including killing some higher ranked officers and also to have captured small ammunition depots in the area.
After the ongoing clashes the Free Syrian Army also announced they were able to advance and take over large areas in the Eastern area close to Kafrsousseh.
Due to the rebels among the gained area are also strategic spots that the Syrian government used to launch its operations against Western Al Ghouta, in addition to a large number of buildings in the Southern area close to Sahnaya.
According to the Video the rebels managed to sneak on very close to Army held buildings and using an suprise attack to take out government forces without facing much resistance. This is an indicator for an well planned suprise attack.
Darayya is a Syrian city administratively belonging to Rif Dimashq. It has been one of the oldest cities in Syria, known for being the place where Paul the Apostle had his conversion (30s AD), "on Damascus road". The city has a population of 75,134 as of 2004, making it the 19th largest city per geographical entity in Syria. It is sometimes regarded as a suburb of Damascus.
Darayya has seen heavy fighting during the Syrian Civil War. The city was an early hotspot for anti-government protests. The city fell to anti-government militants from the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group Jabhat al-Nusra and some point in the first half of 2012, and was re-captured twice by the Syrian army and other pro-government forces: first at in the end of August 2012, often refered to as the Darayya massacre, and a second time on 4 January 2013.

In Syria, women and children were among the dozens found dead under suspicious circumstances this week. Rebel forces said more than 1,000 people were killed by the government in a chemical weapons attack, while the authorities dismissed the report as "baseless".
So, where does this incident leave the international community, if the so-called red line has been crossed? And is a political solution still possible for Syria?
To discuss this, Inside Story, with presenter Jane Dutton, is joined by guests: Dina Esfandiary, a research associate on the non-proliferation and disarmament programme for the International Institute for Strategic Studies, who specialises in chemical weapons and security; Firas Abi Ali, the head of the Middle East and North Africa country risk team for IHS Global; and Nikolaos Van Dam, the former Dutch ambassador to Egypt and Iraq.
