Police are searching for three armed men in North Carolina who robbed an armored truck and two armed guards of $4 million in gold, according to authorities.
Two TransValue Inc. security guards reportedly said they had been transporting precious metals, including silver and gold, from Florida to Massachusetts on Sunday evening when their truck developed mechanical problems and they pulled over on Interstate 95, the Wilson County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
The guards said that's when three armed men in a white van approached and ordered them to get down on the ground. The men tied the guards' hands behind their backs before forcing them to walk into the woods.
The armed men then took several barrels of gold, estimated at more than US$4 million in value, and fled, the guards said.
TransValue, based in Miami, specializes in transportation of precious metals and cash, according to its website. The company was founded in 1992, and states online that its shipments are insured "through the company's all risk insurance policy" up to US$100 million.
Owner of the company, Jesus Rodriguez, told The Wilson Times that the heist was "very rare."

Rebecca Sedans, age 49, sued her former employer, New York Presbyterian Hospital, for discrimination because she can't sue them for just being plain old stupid.
Sedans has a deep brain implant which helps control a Parkinson-like disease which causes her to suffer from painful muscle contractions. When she began working at the hospital in 1998 the hospital was supportive and did not schedule her to work in units which had MRI machines.
This is because electronic imaging machines cause Sedan's brain implant to malfunction, causing seizures or a return of the painful muscle contractions which leave her immobilized.
However, apparently Sedan's bosses--who work in the medical industry--forgot about that pesky little detail. They began scheduling Sedan to work in ICU units with MRI machines. Her requests and reminders about her brain implant fell on deaf ears, because her bosses all seemed to have brain damage.
After her first day working near the MRI machines Sedan's muscle contractions returned, she blacked out for 26 hours, and suffered from amnesia. Her neurosurgeon had to reprogramme her device twice.
So it seems quite reasonable that Sedan would refuse to return to working near an MRI machine ever again, but the hospital didn't see it that way. They felt she was refusing to work and fired her.
A Manhattan Supreme Court disagreed with the hospital and has awarded Sedan US$4 million for emotional trauma and punitive damages.
Maybe Sedan's former supervisors need a brain implant that gives them electrical shocks when they're being unfeeling bastards.

The first trading session of the year is usually characterized by optimism.
But that wasn't the case this time,... with more than four trillion U.S. dollars wiped off the global market cap in the first week of trading -- the worst performance in four-and-a-half years.
Kim Min-ji has more on the market turmoil around the world.
It wasn't a good start to the year for the global stock market.
With China's system-wide circuit breaker pulling the plug on trading twice in just a week,... coupled with growing geopolitical tensions in the form of North Korea's latest provocation and unrest in the Middle East -- shockwaves were felt across the globe.
According to Bloomberg,... the global market cap stood at over 64-point-4 trillion U.S. dollars on the third of January.
But in just five days of trading,... the figure fell almost 7 percent,... slashing the figure down by over four trillion dollars.
China posted the biggest losses,... shedding nearly 14 percent,... with about 990 billion dollars disappearing.
The U.S., which makes up 40 percent of the global market cap, lost 5-and-a-half percent.
Losses were also pronounced in Europe,... with Germany tumbling more than seven percent and the U.K. six-and-a-half percent.
Korea shed almost five percent,... and Japan, four percent.
This is the market's worst performance since the first week of August 2011,... when global shares fell nearly eight percent.
The trigger then was the U.S.,... after Standard & Poors downgraded Washington's credit rating from triple A to double A plus.
Looking ahead, with lingering global uncertainties piling up,... analysts expect another week of market turmoil to rattle investors.

Egypt has began work on an extra lane for the Suez Canal, a project with an estimated cost of US$4 billion. The project is aimed to boost Egypt’s economy and help speed up the movement of vessels through the 193-kilometer-long canal, which connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.
The new 72-kilometer-long project will involve 37 kilometers of dry digging and 35 kilometers of expansion and deepening of the current canal.
The existing canal only provides one-way traffic, while the new canal would allow ships to travel in both directions for less than half of the length of the canal.
The project was initially estimated to be completed in five years, but Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi said it could be completed in a year.
The existing canal brings in around US$5 billion of revenues annually. The new project is expected to boost Egypt annual revenues to US$13.5 billion. Some 16,600 ships passed through the canal last year.

Obama unveils US$4 tril. budget to help middle class

U.S. President Barack Obama has submitted a new government spending plan for the next fiscal year,... following through on his promise to help working-class Americans.
With more, we turn to Paul Yi at the News Center.
Paul, what are some of the measures outlined in this new budget?
It′s a near-4-trillion-dollar proposal... that is going to try to help low and middle income households... at the cost of taxing big companies and the wealthiest Americans.
But a lot of pundits are already saying it′s a plan that′s unlikely to pass... as it′s already facing tough opposition from the Republican-controlled Congress.
Our Song Ji-sun gives us the breakdown.
"Practical, not partisan."
That′s how U.S. President Barack Obama described his budget proposal of nearly 4-trillion dollars... for the fiscal year 2016, which starts in October this year.
As earlier outlined in his State of the Union speech last month, Obama′s plan is aimed at taxing the wealthy to support the middle class.
It calls for a one-time, 14 percent tax on an estimated 2-point-1 trillion U.S. dollars of untaxed overseas income, while imposing a 19 percent tax on U.S. companies′ future foreign earnings.
Obama is also looking to close tax loopholes such as one on "carried interest" to help fund investments in infrastructure and education.
"It gives Americans of every age the chance to upgrade their skills so they can earn higher wages, and includes my plan to make 2-year colleges free for responsible students."
The budget calls for 612 billion dollars in overall military spending, which includes funding to defeat Islamic State militants and to support NATO and European allies against Russian aggression.
The budget foresees a 474 billion dollar deficit, at 2-point-5 percent of U.S. GDP - which is the lowest level since 2008.
It′s projected to stabilize at that level, reducing the deficit by 1-point-8 trillion dollars over the next decade.
The proposal requires approval from Congress but faces a rocky road ahead... with House speaker John Boehner rating Obama′s plan as unbalanced with "more spending, more taxes and more debt."
Song Ji-sun, Arirang News.

When you take the bus from Santa Elena to Melcor De Menos, the bus is going to stop on the main road. The hotel I stayed at is about 3 blocks down that road going north. You'll pass up about 3 hotels and you'll see it to the right, it's a yellow building.
The hotel staff thought I was Nicaraguan or belizean, but when I showed her my ID she seemed sad that she didn't charge me more. Of course they charged me $30 Quetzals to use the computer lab, I don't know if that's the regular price. Even though the beds in the place was clean, they looked rugged to me. I wasn't gonna lay on it. I just didn't want to.
As far as cab prices, they fluctuate. Sometimes the cabbies will try to rip you off, sometimes they'll charge you the right price. Remeber, there is always room for negotiation.

DemocracyNow.org - As part of ongoing debt negotiations, the White House has proposed slashing more than $4 trillion from annual budget deficits over the next decade — twice what Obama had proposed earlier. While much of the talk in Washington centers on taxes, Social Security and Medicare, far less attention is being paid to the growing cost of the U.S. wars overseas. A new report from Brown University has estimated the true cost of the U.S. wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan will end up costing approximately $4 trillion — far more than the Bush or Obama administrations have acknowledged. The authors of the study reveal that because the war has been financed almost entirely by borrowing, $185 billion in interest has already been paid on war spending, and another $1 trillion could accrue in interest alone through 2020. Democracy Now! interviews Neta Crawford, co-director of the Costs of War Project, and a Professor of Political Science at Boston University.

Bara Jaya to acquire high calorie coal mine up to US$150 million

JAKARTA – PT Bara Jaya Internasional Tbk (ATPK) plans to invest US$150 million for the acquirement and operation of a coal mine in Central Kalimantan next year.
Director of Bara Jaya, Albert Bangun told IDNFinancials, that mine’s acquirement by the second semester 2016 was crucial because the company’s net profit next year “depends on how fast we acquire the coal mine with the high calorie,” as their current production of low calorie coal is too cheap and non-profitable to sell at the moment.
Albert explained that Bara Jaya has two options or a combination of two options to fund the project: either through the issuance of new shares which lends to the possibility of a second rights issue or private placement, or attaining loans, which he added, “we asked for the loan which is, actually they already agreed,” from financial companies.
He couldn’t give targets for next year’s production or bottom or top line because he said that largely depends on the realization of the plan to attain the high calorie coal mine.
He said, “From 5,000 to 5,500 (calories) maybe we can get US$5 or US$4 per metric ton,” about selling to countries such as China or Korea. He mentioned that selling to a broker was also a possibility. (CH)

The Ritz-Carlton Residences won't been the only mouthwatering luxury homes in Florida's Sunny Isles Beach when they open. The US city will also be home to the Jade Signature tower. Designed by Herzog and de Meuron, its residences range in price from US$4-30 million.
The Jade Signature will have facilities for kids and teens The Jade Signature will have a bar and grill offering pool, beach and residence service The Jade Signature will have underground parking A master bathroom at the Jade Signature
Once constructed, says its website, the 57-story Jade Signature will be "one of Miami's finest, most prestigious beachside homes." It is perhaps not as outwardly flamboyant as the comparable Ritz-Carlton Residences, its form even being described as "quiet" by senior partner at Herzog and de Meuron Christine Binswanger, but its design is clever and considered.
The footprint of the Jade Signature tower will be parallelogram-shaped. This is based on the movement of the sun and ensures that the development's pool, beach and beachside landscape and residences will benefit from maximum exposure to the sun. Underground parking allows the tower to be surrounded by landscaping, which, designed by Raymond Jungles, provides unbroken access between the building, resort deck and the beach.
At beach level, there is a resort deck and pool; a bar and grill that will offer pool, beach and residence service; a wine bar; and, a residents' kitchen. Beachfront gardens with hammocks and private beach amenities are available to resident, as are an entertainment lounge and facilities for kids and teens.
The building's interiors are designed by French firm PYR. At lobby level, there is the three-story glass lobby itself, a wraparound terrace and a beach pavilion terrace with a breakfast area offering both indoor and outdoor seating. Elsewhere, there is a health and wellness center, a water terrace with massage cabanas and jacuzzis overlooking the ocean, and an outdoor yoga deck and suites for guests.
Residents of the Jade Signature will occupy 192 standard residences, six sky villas and two penthouses. All units feature high-quality cabinet and kitchen appliances, private elevator vestibules, high-speed internet, Wi-Fi and smart home technology.
The standard residences range from one to five bedrooms and offer large, shaded outdoor terraces with glass railings to make the most of the views. Six two-story sky villas cover up to 6,735 sq ft (626 sq m) and house five bedrooms. Their occupants will enjoy 20-ft (6-m) double height living areas and 180-degree views.
The most indulgent residences at the Jade Signature will be its two penthouses, the lower of which will fill the entire 55th floor and the upper of which the entire 56th floor, as well as a portion of the 57th floor. Both will offer 360-degree views, large terrace pools and wraparound balconies.
Among their rooms, they will each have a double living room, family room, breakfast room, bar, library, study, private gym and playroom. They will also each have an expansive master bedroom, master bedroom office and double master sitting room.
The Jade Signature is due for completion in 2017.

The managing director of Namibia-based North River Resources (LON:NRRP), James Beams, discusses the firm’s US$4mln finance package to help move its Namib project towards production.
The AIM-quoted base-metal company reckons the Namib project’s total capital requirement will be US$25-30mln, and it intends to fund it in two phases.
The US$4m Phase 1 funding is designed to fund the company through to an investment decision on the project, which the company believes it should be in a position to make prior to the end of the year. The proposed offer will be fully underwritten by Greenstone Resources, which is already a 29.5% shareholder.
It is subject to shareholder approval, which will be sought at a meeting on August 28.

Register HERE for FREE http://www.shares100.com Foreign exchange, commonly known as Forex or FX, is the exchange of one currency for another at an agreed exchange price on the market. Forex is the worlds most traded market, with an average turnover in excess of US$4 trillion per day.
Compare this to the New York Stock Exchange, which has a daily turnover of around US$50 billion and its easy to see how the foreign exchange market is the biggest financial market in the world.
Essentially, forex trading is the act of simultaneously buying one currency while selling another, primarily for the purpose of speculation. Currency values rise appreciate and fall depreciate against each other due to a number of factors including economics and geopolitics. The common goal of forex traders is to profit from these changes in the value of one currency against another by actively speculating on which way forex prices are likely to turn in the future.
Unlike most financial markets, the forex market has no physical location or central exchange and trades 24 hours a day through a global network of businesses, banks and individuals. This means that currency prices are constantly fluctuating in value against each other, offering multiple trading opportunities.

Pork barrel is the appropriation of government spending for localized projects secured solely or primarily to bring money to a representative's district. The usage originated in American English. In election campaigns, the term is used in derogatory fashion to attack opponents. Scholars, however, use it as a technical term regarding legislative control of local appropriations.

David Maris wrote, "one of the key problems with government funding of certain studies [is that] the investment is with taxpayer dollars and the benefit might be only to a few". Describing his opposition of some government funding for scientific research on studies he views as frivolous, he writes, "Scientists often rally quickly to attack anyone who thinks of reducing public funding of science -- they do this under the idea that if you don't want to fund finding answers, you must be a luddite -- you must be against science and progress. I am not. I simply think that there are so many very good ideas to study, but limited money and other higher priorities."
David Boaz of the libertarian Cato Institute opposes governmental decision-making because the obligation to pay taxes is distinct from the decision as to their expenditure on specific budget items. He writes, "We're not asked 'will you pay $100 right now for farm subsidies and $4000 for Medicaid and $1600 for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and $130 for a new presidential helicopter and ... ?' If we did get such a question, we might well decide that lots of government programs were not well worth the money to the people who would be paying the money."
Proposed solutions
Conservatives and libertarians have proposed various reforms to the process of government spending: One of these is simply to limit the amount of money that the government spends.[3] A second reform would be to increase government oversight.[3] A third proposal is to implement tax choice. This latter approach was satirized in a 1990 column by New York Times writer Russell Baker: "I have no doubt that the public, with its strongly satirical view of Federal spending, would send in so many tax returns marked Use for $600 toilet seats only that the Pentagon would soon have to distribute overpriced toilet seats free to the homeless, as the Agriculture Department once had to give away cheese to make storage space available for more excess cheese being bought with the taxpayer's famous dollar."
Examples:
Massages for rabbits
Meditation for hot flashes
Tax breaks for NFL teams
Some purported examples of government waste are merely urban legends, such as the "million dollar" Space Pen purchased by NASA for $6 each.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_waste
The earliest examples of pork barrel politics in the United States was the Bonus Bill of 1817, which was introduced by Democrat John C. Calhoun to construct highways linking the Eastern and Southern United States to its Western frontier using the earnings bonus from the Second Bank of the United States. Calhoun argued for it using general welfare and post roads clauses of the United States Constitution. Although he approved of the economic development goal, President James Madison vetoed the bill as unconstitutional. A more recent example: to pass the recent "Fiscal Cliff" 12/12 a tax write off went to Hollywood -- a $20 million break anytime a TV show or movie is shot in an economically depressed area of the United States.
One of the most famous alleged pork-barrel projects was the Big Dig in Boston, Massachusetts. The Big Dig was a project to relocate an existing 3.5-mile (5.6 km) section of the interstate highway system underground. It ended up costing US$14.6 billion, or over US$4 billion per mile.[9] Tip O'Neill (D-Mass), after whom one of the Big Dig tunnels was named, pushed to have the Big Dig funded by the federal government while he was the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. [10]
During the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign, the Gravina Island Bridge (also known as the "Bridge to Nowhere") in Alaska was cited as an example of pork barrel spending. The bridge, pushed for by Republican Senator Ted Stevens, was projected to cost $398 million and would connect the island's 50 residents and the Ketchikan International Airport to Revillagigedo Island and Ketchikan.[11]
Pork-barrel projects, which differ from earmarks, are added to the federal budget by members of the appropriation committees of United States Congress. This allows delivery of federal funds to the local district or state of the appropriation committee member, often accommodating major campaign contributors. To a certain extent, a member of Congress is judged by their ability to deliver funds to their constituents. The Chairman and the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations are in a position to deliver significant benefits to their states.

The Chairman and the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations are in a position to deliver significant benefits to their states.

In 1981, seven young entrepreneurs in Mumbai set out to create a global corporation from scratch. The company they founded, Bangalore-based Infosys Technologies, has become a US$4 billion information technology powerhouse, with more than 100,000 employees. "We focused on building a world-class company," said S. "Kris" Gopalakrishnan during a recent Wharton Leadership Lecture. Gopalakrishnan described what it took for him and his six co-founders to see their vision through, and how Infosys envisions its future in the IT sector.

Viktor Grebennikov lived in Russia, was an entomologist and made an important discovery, which led to a flying contraption
The vehicle looks simple, but when you get into the details and the science, it's really quite complicated
This video will tell you about Viktor Grebennikov and his flying platform
Scientific discovery comes from staking pains, intense study of something that is difficult for most. My reading facilitates the inventor, who might not be dedicated to reading this material. I read it to him/her and he/she gets through it, understands it and does the world a great favor.
This material is quite difficult and I am lost during most of the explanation, but I think it's a necessary read. Someone will understand it and bring us an antigravity device to use, saving us $4/gallon on gasoline. If you find the material too difficult, you might want to read Grebennikov's book, because it is much, much easier and has lots of images
I am reading this book aloud, because some of those who understand it, might not have the patience or dedication to read it, tenaciously, themselves, so I read it and hope that they have the patience to watch the video, where I spoon feed the difficult material, add my comments and enable someone with an inventive mind to follow the discussion between the author and myself and perhaps, this will inspire invention

Controversy about currency speculators and their effect on currency devaluations and national economies recurs regularly. Nevertheless, economists including Milton Friedman have argued that speculators ultimately are a stabilizing influence on the market and perform the important function of providing a market for hedgers and transferring risk from those people who don't wish to bear it, to those who do.[80] Other economists, such as Joseph Stiglitz, consider this argument to be based more on politics and a free market philosophy than on economics.[81]
Large hedge funds and other well capitalized "position traders" are the main professional speculators. According to some economists, individual traders could act as "noise traders" and have a more destabilizing role than larger and better informed actors.[82] Also to be considered is the rise in foreign exchange autotrading; algorithmic, or automated, trading has increased from 2% in 2004 up to 45% in 2010.[83]
Currency speculation is considered a highly suspect activity in many countries.[where?] While investment in traditional financial instruments like bonds or stocks often is considered to contribute positively to economic growth by providing capital, currency speculation does not; according to this view, it is simply gambling that often interferes with economic policy. For example, in 1992, currency speculation forced the Central Bank of Sweden to raise interest rates for a few days to 500% per annum, and later to devalue the krona.[84] Mahathir Mohamad, one of the former Prime Ministers of Malaysia, is one well-known proponent of this view. He blamed the devaluation of the Malaysian ringgit in 1997 on George Soros and other speculators.
Gregory Millman reports on an opposing view, comparing speculators to "vigilantes" who simply help "enforce" international agreements and anticipate the effects of basic economic "laws" in order to profit.[85]
In this view, countries may develop unsustainable financial bubbles or otherwise mishandle their national economies, and foreign exchange speculators made the inevitable collapse happen sooner. A relatively quick collapse might even be preferable to continued economic mishandling, followed by an eventual, larger, collapse. Mahathir Mohamad and other critics of speculation are viewed as trying to deflect the blame from themselves for having caused the unsustainable economic conditions.
In a typical foreign exchange transaction, a party purchases some quantity of one currency by paying with some quantity of another currency. The modern foreign exchange market began forming during the 1970s after three decades of government restrictions on foreign exchange transactions (the Bretton Woods system of monetary management established the rules for commercial and financial relations among the world's major industrial states after World War II), when countries gradually switched to floating exchange rates from the previous exchange rate regime, which remained fixed as per the Bretton Woods system.
The foreign exchange market is unique because of the following characteristics:
its huge trading volume representing the largest asset class in the world leading to high liquidity;
its geographical dispersion;
its continuous operation: 24 hours a day except weekends, i.e., trading from 22:00 GMT on Sunday (Sydney) until 22:00 GMT Friday (New York);
the variety of factors that affect exchange rates;
the low margins of relative profit compared with other markets of fixed income; and
the use of leverage to enhance profit and loss margins and with respect to account size.
As such, it has been referred to as the market closest to the ideal of perfect competition, notwithstanding currency intervention by central banks.
According to the Bank for International Settlements,[4] the preliminary global results from the 2013 Triennial Central Bank Survey of Foreign Exchange and OTC Derivatives Markets Activity show that trading in foreign exchange markets averaged $5.3 trillion per day in April 2013. This is up from $4.0 trillion in April 2010 and $3.3 trillion in April 2007. Foreign exchange swaps were the most actively traded instruments in April 2013, at $2.2 trillion per day, followed by spot trading at $2.0 trillion. According to the Bank for International Settlements,[5] as of April 2010, average daily turnover in global foreign exchange markets is estimated at $3.98 trillion, a growth of approximately 20% over the $3.21 trillion daily volume as of April 2007. Some firms specializing on foreign exchange market had put the average daily turnover in excess of US$4 trillion.[6] The $3.98 trillion break-down is as follows:
$1.490 trillion in spot transactions
$475 billion in outright forwards
$1.765 trillion in foreign exchange swaps
$43 billion currency swaps
$207 billion in options and other products

The Federal Reserve System has faced various criticisms since its inception in 1913. These criticisms include the assertions that the Federal Reserve System violates the United States Constitution and that it impedes economic prosperity. Critic Miranda Fleschert contends that the twelve regional Federal Reserve banks (as opposed to the entire Federal Reserve System) consider themselves to be private corporations with private funding.[179] The movement to audit the Federal Reserve System has gained national traction; a bill related to the movement was passed through the House of Representatives in 2012.[180] Many critics see auditing the Federal Reserve System as a means of gaining insight into an institution they contend has historically had little to no transparency, that has acted without congressional approval or oversight, and that has the power to create and loan U.S. dollars based on a monetary policy determined by its own interests.
In 2009, fresh off the financial crisis, a Columbia University finance professor named David Beim was tapped by the New York Fed President William Dudley to conduct a confidential investigation. This was meant to be an internal document and allowed unlimited access. Surprisingly, the biggest obstacle in overseeing the nation's biggest financial institutions was the Fed's own culture. His report states, "Our review of lessons learned from the crisis reveals a culture that is too risk-averse to respond quickly and flexibly to new challenges." One supervisor said, "Within three weeks on the job, I saw the capture set in." When asked to remove the quotation from his report, Beim refused. He claims, "They didn't give an argument. They were embarrassed." The report further quotes Fed employees saying, "Until I know what my boss thinks I don't want to tell you," as well as, "no one feels individually accountable for financial crisis mistakes because management is through consensus." Unsurprisingly, one of the recommendations listed in his report encourages a "sustained effort to overcome excessive risk-aversion and get people to speak up when they have concerns, disagreements or useful ideas. Encourage a culture of critical dialogue and continuous questioning."
In 2012 Carmen Segarra, New York Federal Reserve's appointed regulator to Goldman Sachs, was dismissed for refusing to falsify a report regarding improper actions of Goldman Sachs relating to a conflict of interest when it advised El Paso Corporation on selling itself to Kinder Morgan, in which Goldman Sachs had a US$4 billion stake. Segarra later also revealed that Goldman Sachs did not fulfil their obligation to check that the Federal Reserve had no objection to the terms under which they held shares belonging to Spanish Santander Bank in a transaction described as "legal but shady". The Federal Reserve was criticised for ineffectual behaviour as a government agency, being expected to hold to account an organisation, but instead making only minor criticism and taking no action on being presented with disturbing or threatening information.[183][184][185][186][187]
In the excerpts released by ProPublica, Fed examiners worry about pushing Goldman too hard. Talking about one controversial deal, Michael Silva says, "My own personal thinking right now is that we're looking at a transaction that's legal but shady." One examiner says, "I think we don't want to discourage Goldman from disclosing these types of things in the future…Don't mistake our inquisitiveness, and our desire to understand more about the marketplace in general, as a criticism of you as a firm necessarily." After witnessing a Goldman employee declare that "once clients are wealthy enough, certain consumer laws don't apply to them," Segarra was told by a fellow regulator, "You didn't hear that."[188]
In an interview for This American Life, Segarra says, "credibility at the Fed is about subtleties, perceptions as opposed to reality."

The floods in Pakistan began in late July 2010, resulting from heavy monsoon rains in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Punjab and, Balochistan regions of Pakistan, which affected the Indus River basin. Approximately one-fifth of Pakistan's total land area was underwater, approximately 796,095 square kilometres. According to Pakistani government data, the floods directly affected about 20 million people, mostly by destruction of property, livelihood and infrastructure, with a death toll of close to 2,000.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon had initially asked for US$460 million for emergency relief, noting that the flood was the worst disaster he had ever seen. Only 20% of the relief funds requested had been received on 15 August 2010. The U.N. had been concerned that aid was not arriving fast enough, and the World Health Organization reported that ten million people were forced to drink unsafe water. The Pakistani economy was harmed by extensive damage to infrastructure and crops. Damage to structures was estimated to exceed US$4 billion, and wheat crop damages were estimated to be over US$500 million. Total economic impact may have been as much as US$43 billion.

DC Water is an industry leading multi-jurisdictional regional utility providing drinking water, wastewater collection, and storm runoff treatment for millions of visitors, residents, and employees in the District of Columbia. D.C. Water operates the world's largest advanced wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 391 million gallons per day and a peak capacity of 1.076 billion gallons per day with a service area of 725 square miles (1,026 hectares). Over 1,200 wet tons of biosolids fertilizer are produced daily for agricultural and ornamental gardening uses. The Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant is located on 153 acres along the Potomac River at the southernmost tip of the District of Columbia, Washington, USA.
Blue Plains first began operations in 1938 with primary treatment, followed later with secondary, or biological, treatment. Finally tertiary, or advanced, wastewater treatment was added for nutrient removal. The plant has already undergone nearly US$1 billion in upgrades in the last decade and has three enormous environmental projects under way totally nearly an US$4 billion investment. These three projects include: 1) Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) to further reduce nitrogen in effluent (US$950 million); 2) Thermal hydrolysis and anaerobic digestion facilities (US$400 million); and 3) The Clean Rivers Project to control combined sewer overflows and storm water treatment a US$2.6 billion project being built with/at the Blue Plains facility.

How Washington Wastes Your Money and Why They Won't Stop: Political Cheating & Abuse (1992)

Typically, "pork" involves funding for government programs whose economic or service benefits are concentrated in a particular area but whose costs are spread among all taxpayers. Public works projects, certain national defense spending projects, and agricultural subsidies are the most commonly cited examples.
Citizens Against Government Waste outlines seven criteria by which spending can be classified as "pork":
Requested by only one chamber of Congress
Not specifically authorized
Not competitively awarded
Not requested by the President
Greatly exceeds the President's budget request or the previous year's funding
Not the subject of Congressional hearings
Serves only a local or special interest.
It ended up costing US$14.6 billion, or over US$4 billion per mile. Tip O'Neill (D-Mass), after whom one of the Big Dig tunnels was named, pushed to have the Big Dig funded by the federal government while he was the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
During the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign, the Gravina Island Bridge (also known as the "Bridge to Nowhere") in Alaska was cited as an example of pork barrel spending. The bridge, pushed for by Republican Senator Ted Stevens, was projected to cost $398 million and would connect the island's 50 residents and the Ketchikan International Airport to Revillagigedo Island and Ketchikan.

More about this BCSEA Webinar here: http://www.bcsea.org/past-webinars#Carbon-Bubble
Note: Mark's presentation starts at about 08:30 in the recording.
What is the limit to the cumulative emissions of carbon in the atmosphere, which we must limit if we are to remain below the dangerous 2 Celsius increase in global temperature?
Fossil fuel companies and oil producing nations have confirmed reserves, with firm plans to extract them, of enough fossil fuels to generate about 2,975 GT CO2e - five times more than can be burnt if we are to avoid 'disastrous' climate change.
In 2012, these reserves were valued at US $4 trillion of share values and US $1.27 trillion in debt; a further US $650 Billion was spent on exploration for yet more reserves.
What will be the effects on the financial system if these are stranded assets? What are the financial risks of holding or buying them now ? How could these funds be re-allocated to safe renewable energy sources which will have more secure future returns ? And what are the consequences for coal, oil and natural gas expansion and exploration plans, and the governments and companies involved?
See Guy Dauncey's edited summary of their work in 2013.
Presenter: Mark Campanale is Founding Director of The Carbon Tracker Initiative in London UK. He conceived and originated the 'unburnable carbon' thesis which was picked up by Bill McKibben in Rolling Stone Magazine and has since taken on huge global significance. He was editor of Unburnable Carbon, are markets carrying a carbon bubble?, and the 2013 Report Wasted Capital.
Mark is responsible for strategy, board matters and developing Carbon Tracker's capital markets framework analysis. Prior to forming Carbon Tracker, Mark had twenty years experience in sustainable financial markets.
Mark is co-founder of some of the first responsible investment funds at Jupiter Asset Management, NPI, AMP Capital, and Henderson Global Investors. Mark served on the World Business Council for Sustainable Development working group on capital markets leading up to the 1992 Earth Summit; was a Member of the Steering Committee of UNEP Financial Sector Initiative (1999-2003), and continues to advise a number of investment funds.
He was a founder firector of the UK Sustainable and Responsible Investment Forum (UKSIF), 1990-2006, is a member of the Advisory Council of SASB (Sustainable Accounting Standards Board) and ImpactBase.org and the UNEP-WRI working group on greenhouse gas emissions and the financial sector.

Tokyo DisneySea is a 176-acre (71.22 ha) theme park at the Tokyo Disney Resort located in Urayasu, Chiba, Japan, just outside Tokyo. It opened on September 4, 2001. It is owned by The Oriental Land Company, which licenses Disney characters and themes from The Walt Disney Company. Tokyo DisneySea attracted an estimated 12 million visitors in 2009, making it the fifth-most-visited theme park in the world. In 2011, the park hosted 11.9 million visitors, making it the fourth most visited theme park in the world. Tokyo DisneySea was the second theme park to open at the Tokyo Disney Resort and the ninth park of the eleven worldwide Disney theme parks to open. Tokyo DisneySea was the fastest theme park in the world to reach the milestone of 10 million guests, having done so in 307 days after its grand opening. The previous record-holder was Universal Studios Japan 338 days after its opening. Tokyo DisneySea is also the most expensive theme park ever built, estimated to have cost over U.S. $4 billion. Tokyo DisneySea and its companion park Tokyo Disneyland are the only Disney parks in the world not owned by The Walt Disney Company.

Ahoy mateys! If you really (and I mean really) like boats, I shot video on the Chao Praya Express boat from the end of the line in Nonthaburi to the other end of the route at Sathon Taksin pier in Bangkok. We drove by taxi to Ko Kret Island and as the day got long we reasoned it would be faster, or at least no slower, to take the boat vs. a car back to Bangkok. The trip was about 45 minutes for 21 kilometres and cost the grand sum of 90 Baht for the three of us ($4 for all three of us). Feel free to skip ahead as it can get pretty monotonous, I admit.

April 14, 2012
The foreign exchange market (forex, FX, or currency market) is a form of exchange for the global decentralized trading of international currencies. Financial centers around the world function as anchors of trading between a wide range of different types of buyers and sellers around the clock, with the exception of weekends. The foreign exchange market determines the relative values of different currencies.
The foreign exchange market assists international trade and investment by enabling currency conversion. For example, it permits a business in the United States to import goods from the European Union member states especially Eurozone members and pay Euros, even though its income is in United States dollars. It also supports direct speculation in the value of currencies, and the carry trade, speculation on the change in interest rates in two currencies.
In a typical foreign exchange transaction, a party purchases a quantity of one currency by paying a quantity of another currency.
The foreign exchange market is unique because of
its huge trading volume representing the largest asset class in the world leading to high liquidity;
its geographical dispersion;
its continuous operation: 24 hours a day except weekends, i.e. trading from 20:15 GMT on Sunday until 22:00 GMT Friday;
the variety of factors that affect exchange rates;
the low margins of relative profit compared with other markets of fixed income; and
the use of leverage to enhance profit and loss margins and with respect to account size.
As such, it has been referred to as the market closest to the ideal of perfect competition, notwithstanding currency intervention by central banks. According to the Bank for International Settlements, as of April 2010, average daily turnover in global foreign exchange markets is estimated at $3.98 trillion, a growth of approximately 20% over the $3.21 trillion daily volume as of April 2007. Some firms specializing on foreign exchange market had put the average daily turnover in excess of US$4 trillion.
The $3.98 trillion break-down is as follows:
$1.490 trillion in spot transactions
$475 billion in outright forwards
$1.765 trillion in foreign exchange swaps
$43 billion currency swaps
$207 billion in options and other products

The Federal Reserve System has faced various criticisms since its inception in 1913. These criticisms include the assertions that the Federal Reserve System violates the United States Constitution and that it impedes economic prosperity. Critic Miranda Fleschert contends that the twelve regional Federal Reserve banks (as opposed to the entire Federal Reserve System) consider themselves to be private corporations with private funding.[182] The movement to audit the Federal Reserve System has gained national traction; a bill related to the movement was passed through the House of Representatives in 2012.[183] Many critics see auditing the Federal Reserve System as a means of gaining insight into an institution they contend has historically had little to no transparency, that has acted without congressional approval or oversight, and that has the power to create and loan U.S. dollars based on a monetary policy determined by its own interests.
In 2009, fresh off the financial crisis, a Columbia University finance professor named David Beim was tapped by the New York Fed President William Dudley to conduct a confidential investigation. This was meant to be an internal document and allowed unlimited access. Surprisingly, the biggest obstacle in overseeing the nation’s biggest financial institutions was the Fed’s own culture. His report states, “Our review of lessons learned from the crisis reveals a culture that is too risk-averse to respond quickly and flexibly to new challenges.” One supervisor said, “Within three weeks on the job, I saw the capture set in.” When asked to remove the quotation from his report, Beim refused. He claims, “They didn’t give an argument. They were embarrassed.” The report further quotes Fed employees saying, “Until I know what my boss thinks I don’t want to tell you,” as well as, “no one feels individually accountable for financial crisis mistakes because management is through consensus.” Unsurprisingly, one of the recommendations listed in his report encourages a “sustained effort to overcome excessive risk-aversion and get people to speak up when they have concerns, disagreements or useful ideas. Encourage a culture of critical dialogue and continuous questioning.”
The Federal Reserve was criticised for ineffectual behaviour as a government agency, being expected to hold to account an organisation, but instead making only minor criticism and taking no action on being presented with disturbing or threatening information.
In the excerpts released by ProPublica, Fed examiners worry about pushing Goldman too hard. Talking about one controversial deal, Michael Silva says, “My own personal thinking right now is that we’re looking at a transaction that’s legal but shady.” One examiner says, “I think we don’t want to discourage Goldman from disclosing these types of things in the future…Don’t mistake our inquisitiveness, and our desire to understand more about the marketplace in general, as a criticism of you as a firm necessarily.” After witnessing a Goldman employee declare that “once clients are wealthy enough, certain consumer laws don’t apply to them,” Segarra was told by a fellow regulator, “You didn’t hear that.”[191]
In an interview for This American Life, Segarra says, “credibility at the Fed is about subtleties, perceptions as opposed to reality.”

The Economy of Asia comprises more than 4.4 billion people (60% of the world population) living in 49 different states. Six further states lie partly in Asia, but are considered to belong to another region economically and politically. Asia is the fastest growing economic region and the largest continental economy by GDP PPP in the world. China is the largest economy in Asia and the second largest economy in the world. Moreover, Asia is the site of some of the world's longest economic booms, starting from the Japanese economic miracle (1950–1990), Miracle of the Han River (1961–1996) in South Korea and the economic boom (1978–2013) in China.
As in all world regions, the wealth of Asia differs widely between, and within, states. This is due to its vast size, meaning a huge range of different cultures, environments, historical ties and government systems. The largest economies in Asia in terms of PPP gross domestic product (GDP) are China, India, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Indonesia, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, Pakistan, Malaysia and Philippines and in terms of nominal gross domestic product (GDP) are China, Japan, India, Russia, South Korea, Indonesia, Turkey, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Iran, Malaysia and Singapore .
Wealth (if measured by GDP per capita) is mostly concentrated in the East Asian territories of Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan, as well as in oil rich countries in West Asia such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, and Oman. Israel and, to a lesser extent Turkey are exceptions: both lie in the territory of Asia despite not often being counted as such. Israel is a developed country, while Turkey is an advanced emerging country. Asia, with the exception of Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, is currently undergoing rapid growth and industrialization spearheaded by China and India, the two fastest growing major economies in the world. While East Asian and Southeast Asian countries generally rely on manufacturing and trade for growth, countries in the Middle East depend more on the production of commodities, principally oil, for economic growth. Over the years, with rapid economic growth and large trade surplus with the rest of the world, Asia has accumulated over US$4 trillion of foreign exchange reserves – more than half of the world's total.
Asia's large economic disparities are a source of major continuing tension in the region.[40] While global economic powers China, Japan, India, and South Korea continue powering through, and Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Sri Lanka have entered the path to long-term growth, regions right next to these countries are in severe need of assistance.
Given the enormous quantity of cheap labor in the region, particularly in China and India, where large workforces provide an economic advantage over other countries, the rising standard of living will eventually lead to a slow-down. Asia is also riddled with political problems that threaten not just the economies, but the general stability of the region and world. The nuclear neighbors—Pakistan and India—constantly pose a threat to each other, causing their governments to invest heavily in military spending.[41]
Military intervention by the United States in Iraq and Afghanistan has also inflamed extremism and resulted in several terrorist attacks in a number of Asian countries. Another impending crisis is the depletion of oil reserves in the Middle East. Most of these economies have traditionally been over-dependent on oil and have had difficulty establishing another pillar in their economies.[42]
Yet another potential global danger posed by the economy of Asia is the growing accumulation of foreign exchange reserves. The countries/regions with the largest foreign reserves are mostly in Asia - China (Mainland - $2,454 billion & Hong Kong - $245 billion, June 2010), Japan ($1,019 billion, June 2009), Russia ($456 billion, April 2010), India ($345 billion, April 2015), Taiwan ($372 billion, September 2010), the Republic of Korea ($286 billion, July 2010), and Singapore ($206 billion, July 2010). This increasingly means that the interchangeability of the Euro, USD, and GBP are heavily influenced by Asian central banks. Some economists in the western countries see this as a bad thing, prompting their respective governments to take action.[43]
According to the World Bank, China may become the largest economy in the world sometime between 2020 and 2030, while India may become the second largest economy in the world sometime between 2030 and 2035.[44]
Based on Hurun Report, for the first time in 2012 Asia surpassed North America in amount of billionaires. More than 40 percent or 608 billionaires came from Asia, where as North America had 440 billionaires and Europe with 324 billionaires.
